I don't have more information on this since the test is from Japan.

1) Sony F3 vs Canon 60D Exposure Test.

2) Sony F3: comparing standard mode // MPEG2 Long GOP 4:2:0 35Mbps // ProRes 422 HQ 222Mbps // ProRes 422 HQ 222Mbps + Neat Video (ProRes via Aja Ki Pro external recorder). There is also a 300% zoom magnification comparison window by the end.

3) Sony F3: MPEG2-Long GOP 4:2:0 35Mbps (internal recorder) versus ProRes 422 HQ 220Mbps (via Aja Ki Pro external recorder).

Are we to believe from that first one that the Canon 60D is somehow better at compression and highlights? I find that hard to believe but would love to hear otherwise.

What accounts for the sudden HDR in the first clip?

Thats not what I take away from this at all. If the Canon was better, the white tiles would still be distinct from each other when the clip was corrected down. I think.

I assume the methodology of the test is this (which was recently done with the Alexa vs Red and posted in similar fashion): Shoot increasing amounts of over and under exposure, and then take each clip and correct it back to normal in the computer, using 18% grey chip=50IRE.

It's most useful as a simultaneous comparison to other cameras, it seems, although if you know what each chip is (grey +2stops? grey +3stops?) you can derive real info from it.

[edit: I neglected to notice that the tiles for both cameras started to go at +4 stops. So assuming this guy did "normal" at 0db gain on the F3, if he would have rated the camera at +6db (which is no big deal noise wise), he would have gotten an extra highlight stop.

This is in line with what Sony says about rating the camera at 1600ASA to get the most out of it in S-Log, and also in line with how you eek more latitude out of a Red.]
