When: Monday, April 18th, 2005 6:00PM

pardon my ignorance, (first time caller, long time listener btw) I've never been to NAB before and this year I am going to be in the US during that time and I would like to go.

do you need tickets to check out all the booths and go to the special DVCPROHD/P2 event for members of DVXUser.com if yes where do I get them.

Cheers.

Barry: I actually can't wait to fly - it's 12 hours of peace when I can finally get a decent sleep. What I hate is the lay-off in LA.
Jan: On Monday (which is the first day of NAB, but I don't need to remind you this) the stand will be a big zoo. I guess an alternative location would be better?...

Will there be any other DVXuser gatherings besides this one? Will the DVXuser members also get discounts at the buffet? :)

He Gabriel,

Well I agreed to Monday as most everyone would be there, Many people come in early and leave on Tuesday, so while I had originally thought of Wednesday, that really doesn't work. So what we will be doing is finding a meeting room of sorts. So far we have 50 people signed up and that would be impossible to do in the booth either on Wednesday or Monday.

Best,

Jan

So more later,

Jan

Aaah, so THAT's the mystery behind Monday madness at NAB... I always wondered why everyone HAS to be there the very first day.

Jarred Land

Last year we had a very small gathering in a room at the Hilton... perhaps this year whoever has the biggest room out of all of us can volunteer it for some good old shinanagans... I will buy the drinks :)

Hmm, this is starting to sound like a good time. Kinda makes me want to go to NAB just to meet the people on this site. Forget the new cameras. Let's party!

Any plans for a streaming remote, for us poor people who don't go to NAB? I know Sony is doing one for their Vegas 6/DVDA3 announcements.

There's an idea... or at least someone take your cell phone camera and link it to a blog for real-time snapshots of the hdx and surrounding party.

we are organizing some sort of recording of the event... it wont be streaming but there will be a clip after for download.

Hi Everybody.

Based on the reservations, it started to look like a huge crowd, so that meant that we needed a meeting room because there wouldn't be enough standing room in the booth. So the idea emerged that we take over the theater that we have in the booth, but then because people can come in there and take seats, just before show time that we need, during the show didn't seem like a good idea.

So I said what about after the show closes. So I am now officially changing the time of this event to 6:00pm on Monday. We will start the program with the 3D HD program followed with a presentation on the camera and P2. We will have the theater all to ourselves.

So Monday at 6:00pm be there a bit before as the last show lets out about 5:55 and we should be in and get seated quickly. The NAB hall will close at 6:00pm and when we are finished we will all be booted out of the Hall, so if you wanted to see anything else in the Panasonic booth get there before this program and mosey around.

Anyhow I hope the new time doesn't cause a problem. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Best,

Jan

With that in mind folks- be sure to get there on time. The NAB security guards do not have much of a sense of humor about the idea of 6:01 PM. :)

I expect to be staying at the cheapest hotel possible in the area ( dives). Any locals have any ideas of the cheapest places? How is Circus Circus, they have some really cheap NAB rates.

NoahK
03-29-2005, 08:49 AM
Circus Circus is quite the Crusty the Clown Crackhouse- I'd advise alternate digs if possible. There's a lot of decent little Motel 6s in the area as well. Also I hear good things about the Stardust though it may take some effort to locate vacancy as we get closer to the day.

The Fiztergards (forgive the bad spelling) on the strip, wasn't a bad price, but that's been a few years.

Boo,

Just see me in the booth earlier. I will be there and can walk you through it. Sorry I had to change the time but I just couldn't imagine 144 people in the part of the booth where the camera is going to be located. And getting everyone to be able to hear me just called out for the theater. So just see me earlier.

Best,

Jan

Thank you, a download file (obviously recorded with a dvx100) would be better than a streaming session.

The Fiztergards
I assume you meant the Fitzgerald's? That's a downtown hotel, quite a way from the strip. The further you get from the convention center (and the older the hotel), the lower the rates should be, especially as you'll have to figure out how to get to the convention center from the hotel (taxis are a little expensive, especially for multiple days).

Try to pick a hotel that's on the NAB shuttlebus line. The NAB buses make daily runs (maybe as frequently as every 15 minutes) to various hotels, and that'll save you quite a bit of cash and hassle.

The Hilton is the closest hotel, but there's a new little one I think it's called the Renaissance and they're both adjoining the convention center. Then there are a few that are in easy walking distance, like the Riviera, etc. The "name" hotels, like the MGM, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, etc -- those are going to be pricey. The downtown hotels (Horseshoe, Lady Luck, Four Queens, etc) should be a lot more affordable, but I have no idea what the rooms are like. And there are plenty of nasty rathole dive hotels around too.

The Station Casinos properties are usually pretty clean and nice, but most aren't close by (Palace Station is the closest, and it's really fairly close to the convention center), but if the rooms are cheap, then even after you factor in cab fares maybe they'd be worth considering. I know some people like to stay outside the city at Jean (I think there are two hotels there, I think one's called the River's Landing or Golden something like that), which is about 30 minutes outside of town, it'd be a long cab ride but maybe it's cheap? And at Primm/Stateline, about 45 minutes outside of town, there are some more hotels, like Buffalo Bill's and Kactus Kate's, those are frequently $29/night but I don't know what they cost during NAB week. I'll bet there's a daily shuttle from all those, but obviously it's buyer beware and you'll have to verify all that for yourself.

Man, now that I think of it, you'd think a local like me would be able to give you guys better advice, but... truth is, because I'm a local, I don't ever bother with the hotels! So I don't really know what to tell you, but if anyone has a question on a specific hotel, ask and I'll tell you what I know about it (i.e., there are a few in the area of Las Vegas Blvd. and Charleston that are primarily used at the rate of 20 minutes per customer, if you know what I mean, and you may not want to stay there...)

Jarred Land
03-29-2005, 02:50 PM
im staying at the Sahara.. never stayed there before but it was cheap( $120 a night), and close to the convention center.. every year to date I have always stayed at the Luxor.. which is about as far away as you can get from the convention center. So this year I thought I would try something closer.

Oh.. and dont forget there is a brand new monorail linking everything up.. so if you are on the strip it should make things easier.. Walking 12 blocks in the desert kinda sucks.

Jarred Land
03-29-2005, 02:51 PM
Oh.. and its very important you guys get there around 5:45... in the panna booth.. as 6pm the doors close as mentioned and you aint getting in.

Barry_Green
03-29-2005, 03:17 PM
Er... about that monorail... don't count on it! It's been something of a nightmarish disaster. Maybe it'll be up and running reliably by the time NAB hits, but so far it runs for a day, parts fall off it, and they shut it down for a few months. Then they try it again, more parts fall off it, etc...

One of the gags here (after it dropped off pieces for the second time) was that the Monorail was kind of like Santa Claus -- it only works once a year, dropping things off... :)

Is it 6pm or 4pm? The top of this thread says one thing and the event/form.html say another.

Wait, I just saw the 5:45 comment... so I guess 6pm is it. The form.html probably should be fixed. The email sent out to everyone also said 4pm.

Jarred Land

sorry you gotta be there at the booth at 5:45pm. NAB closes at 6, and thats when our little party starts, and if you try to show up at 6:01 security wont let you in.

Hi All

Travelling 16hrs and half way across the world to my first NAB. I really don't want to miss the HVX-200 preview. Is your name registered for the event through the web entry? or is there some other procedure for entry?(such as a mailed invitation) Can anyone give me the duration of the demo?

Cheers!

NoahK

It's very informal- not to worry. If you register through the web page that's all you need do. We're expecting for the presentation to run about an hour.

Hey thanks for the quick heads-up. I am right in understanding Panasonic are releasing more official information (press release) on the HVX200 on April 4? as part of the build up to NAB?

NoahK

Possibly though it may well be that what's already leaked is all that was planned before NAB.

Jarred, I hate to tell you this, but the Sahara sucks! I stayed there for NAB last year, and I wish I hadn't. I was planning on using the monorail to get around but it wasn't open yet. The Sahara has very few amenities, the food choices are terrible, and not much is within easy walking distance. The hotel is really out there by itself. The only thing close is "the world's biggest gift shop" across the street - at least IT has a little market where you can buy snacks and sundries. And yes, you can walk to the convention center, but it's still a bit of a hike, especially in the afternoon. I've decided to go back to the Flamingo this year: right in the heart of the strip, lots of resturaunts nearby, and also on the monorail line. Heck, I even had a better time staying at the Las Vegas Club in dingy old downtown than I had at the Sahara.
