Matt is a gifted writer with a great poetic sense. I couldn't be happier for him, and I can't wait to see his next.

Screen Media Films has acquired Matt Osterman's debut feature "Phasma Ex Machina" from XYZ Films, the company announced on Wednesday.

Screen Media plans to release the critically acclaimed supernatural thriller on DVD and VOD during the second quarter of 2011 under the new title "Ghost From the Machine."

The film follows a young man who must raise his younger brother after the death of their parents. Ignoring his newfound responsibilities, he decides to delve into the murky science of the supernatural and invent a machine intended to be a conduit to the other side. However his unintended level of success has unexpected consequences that threaten his safety and that of those around him.

Osterman's movie has played over a dozen film festivals across the world, including the Fantasia International Film Festival, the Telluride Horror Film Festival and the Arizona Underground Film Festival where the picture was named Best of the Fest.

Jennifer Kramer produced the project and Jon Maichel Thomas served as co-producer.

XYZ's Nate Bolotin brokered the deal with Screen Media Films president Robert Baruc and Screen Media Ventures' EVP David T. Fannon.

"We are looking forward to the opportunity to bring the many anxious fans this original and intelligent twist on the traditional ghost story," Baruc said in a statement, while Bolotin added that "Matt has created a fresh new look into the sci-fi genre and we are excited to be a part of what is sure to be his first of many engaging features."
