I found out exactly how tough a XL2 was made yesterday. I was shooting my weekly golf show at the World Golf Village, and had the XL2 set up on a tripod at the 18th green. The course was busy, lots of golfers on the course. I had turned around to give the talent some direction, so I wasn't more than 5 feet away from the camera, when all of the sudden I hear a crashing sound. Two golfers in a golf cart had come up from behind me and swerved and clipped the tripod, knocking it over and the XL2 along with it. Luckily I had it setup on the grass and not the concrete cart path. Fretting that the shoot was over, I set the camera back up on the tripod and the power was still on, everything operating 100% like it should. No scratches, no dents, just a little bit of grass clippings on the metal battery plate in the rear. After the shoot I went back to the office and the footage is perfect. These babies are made pretty darn tough!

I hope you gave sh*t to those inconsiderate numskulls!
I've heard about the durability of previous XL models - good to hear that they continued this on in the XL2. Thanks for the story.

Yeah..it's funny now..wasn't at the time. Hell you think the dickheads could have yelled "four"!
I know of at least a dozen XL cameras that have had failures within 2 years of purchase. None were from dropping; all were electronic or tape transport issues.
Your camera survived because it hit on the relatively soft grass. Be thankful.
XL cameras are not built pretty damn tough.
But for under $4000, you can't be picky.

I had an XL1 fall in almost an identical manner, onto a living room floor (carpeted but it hit hard), never a problem... Electronic issues (and I've never had one) have nothing to do with durability. I would ask what prosumer grade camcorder you think is more durable than the XL2? Certainly none I've seen...
