I noticed that Panasonic has updated their website slightly. The link below is a teaser for NAB. (doesn't tell much, but I wonder what they mean by 3D?)
http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/nab/default.asp
I like this quote from one of the press releases too. Lots to look forward to at NAB.
Panasonic announced that the industry-leading companies in the Panasonic P2 Alliance -- Avid, Apple, EVS, Leitch, Pinnacle Systems, Thomson/Grass Valley and Quantel -- will have a multitude of available P2-compatible products and systems for sale at NAB.
"We have spent the past year collaborating very closely with our Partners to develop comprehensive P2-compatible solutions. All our combined hard work has come to fruition," said Baisley.
"P2-compatible products and systems will be demonstrated throughout the Panasonic booth and in the exhibits of our Partners. We are streaming along with the goal of seamless integration of P2 with our Partners' products."
Random stab in the dark. 3D is a clever marketing term for the 3 DVCPRO modes it will record in.

I'm assuming it will be some sort of 3D HD camera to compete with Sony's. Possibly a variation of the Varicam.

I'm just going to have to see this for my self at NAB! My credit card is ready for some abuse!

It really is a 3D presentation. It should be pretty cool.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that they were just saying that they will be showing the future of HD in a 3D presentation. We only wish we could shoot in 3D:)
Does 3D really have any practical value? It seems like a tacky gimmick to me. Remember Jaws 3D? And how about Treasure of the Four Crowns? Those were two of the best 3D movies ever... and two of the worst movies ever. Just my two cents.

There have been a lot of advances in 3D since Jaws 3D. Last year I saw a 3D imax film called "bugs" that was simply amazing. I have never had an experience like that in a movie theater before or since I saw that film.

The world will be quickly moving into the realm of the 3D experience. Without divulging too much information, the boys at IMAX are working on some incredible technology to convert regular 35mm film into 3D IMAX. Read about it here:

i bet that what they said too in the 60's, when those first 3D pictures came out.
i dont think the world moves towards 3D... the pure 2D cinema is here to stay. the 3D imax thing is just one sort of entertainment that evolves alongside to the "traditional" cinema..
:) or that's exactly what you meant bgundu?

Am I missing something? What kind of 3D are we talking about? The only kind I have ever known is the old school blue and red glasses 3D? Please explain? ~reservoir~
There are at least two other ways of handling 3D that I know of. I think the modern theaters use LCD glasses. The LCD glasses block one eye at a time and are synchronized with the projectors so that the left eye is exposed while the projector for the left side is showing its frame. Then the left eye becomes obscured by its LCD and the right eye gets to see its frame. Just try blinking your eyes individually.
Actually that gives me an idea! How about a new 3D system where it's up to the viewer to blink their eyes in synch with the images!! (low frame rate of course) j/k
I saw Captain Eo at Disney World in 1989 and I think they used special polarized lenses where one lense was rotated 90° from the other and only allowed in light that was projected through a similar lens (I still don't understand how polarization works so that's as far as I'll go in attempting to explain it).
I'm still not convinced that 3D will ever be more than just a gimmick. But I definitely think it's neat stuff and would be pleasantly surprised if it took off!

Yes, the polorization is awesome. I thought the goofy headsets were a little strange at first, but when I saw butterflies flying around the whole movie theaters, and little kids reaching out trying to grab them I was sold. IT is not blue and red anymore, it is full color and it doesn't hurt your eyes either. It feels completely natural looking at the screen. You don't have to squint or anything, it is just like you are looking at something in real life. It is something that really has to be seen first hand to appreciate, on a gigantic Imax screen.

If you haven't seen the latest run of 3D films, I would suggest you check out:
Ghosts of the Abyss
Aliens of the Deep
Polar Express
I really excited about seeing James Camerons latest venture called Battle Angel. More info here:

Where can you see these 3D films? Are they all IMAX? I've seen Ghosts of the Abyss on DVD but didn't realize it was 3D to begin with. Neat!! ~reservoir~

The DP for our 3D presentation is the same as the one for James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss.
Should be cool.
Sign up and we will see you there!

I know we have always done this in the past, so a tentative yes, the part I don't know is the 3D, they may make just a right eye version for the DVD.
Best,
