To my disappointment and to many others, the new battery pack(DMW-BLC12) for the GH2 seems to currently be unavailable or in very short supply in North America.

One single stock battery lasts diddly squat for a shoot.

If you come across a shop that has stock, please post their info and pricing.

Thanks.

Doses it last less time than the GH1 battery did? I get 1.5 hours of constant recording (prehack) with the screen out on GH1 battery.

GH2 bat has slightly fewer mAh and I assume the camera is more power hungry.

I can't test yet but the GH2 battery is only rated 1200mAh versus the GH1's 1250 mAh battery so it may be a little less. Not sure why they even switched from the GH1 batteries.

Although, yes, it's way-annoying Panasonic changed the GH2's battery design compared to the GH1 ...

And yes, it's way-annoying we can't currently actually buy these batteries yet ...

However, it's fun? useful? instructive? to compare the cost of these new GH2 batteries to the cost of pro camcorder batteries, and realize just how easy & cheap we have it with the GH2. Especially when you compare the GH2's likely battery run-times, and the GH2's video quality, to the video quality of the pro cams that use these big, expensive batteries:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2|1&ci=3469&N=4294545107 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2%7C1&ci=3469&N=4294545107)

Meanwhile, my guess is Panasonic will make the new GH2 batteries available fairly soon. Also, 3rd party companies like SterlingTek, BestBatt & others may have GH2-compatible batteries available "soon". Here's hoping.

Panasonic worked hard to make third party batteries as hard as possible on GH2 and GF2.
So, do not expect them very soon.
Batteries are one of very important aspects that I like about GH1 compared to GH2.
Business on batteries is very bad thing in Panasonic corporate culture.

I'd be happy to just be able to find the ac adapter and the dc coupler. I'd really like to be able to use the camera for some training videos that I have to shoot, but for the time being i'm stuck using my Canon HFS100 since I can power it from an outlet and keep it on all day.

I guess it's going to be a while though. Nontheless, it's a great little camera. I never got a chance to play with the gh1 with or without the hack, but the GH2 is a LOT more fun to do video with than my T2i.

What was wrong with your GH2?

It kept displaying "Battery cannot be used". That was with the orginal Panasonic battery and the two new batteries. It would give that error message about 60% of the time. I think it was just a loose wire or bent pin in the camera.

I just unboxed my new Black GH2 + 14-140mm. I love the camera but I really don't like the 14-140mm. I might try to sell the lens before my trip.

why don't you like the 14-140? the look? or the slowness? and what do you plan to use instead?

I don't like how heavy it is and how slow it is. I am used to using the 14mm and 20mm pancakes and the 45-200mm. It feels like all of those lenses combined don't weigh as much as the 14-140mm. I also don't believe that it focuses any faster or is any quieter than the 14mm. I just love the little 14mm pancake.

Agreed. There's ZERO size benefit to handheld MFT without OIS...

I'll be fine without OIS with the fd lenses with my more stabilized work. I'll still have the 14-140mm and my buddy has the 14-42mm.

Btw I cant find the gh2 battery on the Canadian site.

I called Panasonic Direct, to see if they'll sell the battery any time soon (because we know how reliable their information is).

They said they sell the battery for $69.95 (+ shipping), but it's backordered 2-4 weeks. It sounds like they're taking orders over the phone (but not online).

If anyone is still trying to find these batteries, you can get them from the Panasonic National Parts Center located in Kent, WA. The batteries are not available on their website... you have to call them up at 800-833-9626. Anyway, I was able to order 4 DMW-BLC12 batteries from them for $69.95/ea yesterday. I waited to post until I had them in my hands (had them overnighted), because it just seemed too good to be true. They also have the DMW-DCC8 DC Coupler in stock, but not the AC adapter to go with it. That is backordered a week or two, as well as the battery charger.

Hope this helps some of you! :)

i placed orders last week with vistek and video direct, vistek gave me a new delivery timeframe of 2-4 weeks, at a large expense. video direct doesn't even have a delivery timeframe from the manufacturer, though they have had some and shipped them out already. their advice was to get in line and hope for the best...

however, i did call the panasonic number listed above, and they did in fact say they had batteries in stock. 69.99, and when i asked they said they didn't know the exact number available, but that they had "many." so i take it there are plenty more available.

shipping was 14 bucks or so for ground, 29 for two-day air. hope they arrive and aren't vapor batteries!

Ordered a spare over the phone as well since there is no way of knowing when the distributors will have them in stock. Pricey little devil.

The battery did show up on the online Parts and Accessories site, but I wanted to make sure my order went through given the sordid US GH2 rollout.

I had ordered batteries from this Panasonic parts place when this showed up in this post as I am leaving Monday for a documentary shoot in NW China. The experiences on this site with Panasonic left me dubious and the phone order system leaves one uncomfortable at best - no email confirmation, no tracking #. I think the people taking the orders are in another country. But today they showed up (along with a focus ring) so it seems like this site is good to go for batteries and other accessories.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%EF%BC%AE%EF%BD%85%EF%BD%97-%E6%96%B0%E7%99%BA%E5%A3%B2-%E3%80%90%E3%83%91%E3%83%8A%E3%82%BD%E3%83%8B%E3%8 3%83%E3%82%AF-%EF%BC%A4%EF%BC%AD%EF%BC%B7%EF%BC%8D%EF%BC%A2%EF%B C%AC%EF%BC%A3%EF%BC%91%EF%BC%92-%E4%BA%92%E6%8F%9B%E3%83%90%E3%83%83%E3%83%86%E3%8 3%AA%EF%BC%8D%E3%80%91LUMIX-GH2-%E5%AF%BE%E5%BF%9C/dp/B004IYO5KU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1295745479&sr=1-3

Not too sure how it holds up, as there are no customer reviews as of yet. Do these generic batteries tend to work as well as the stock Panasonic ones?

Panasonic is brazen. I try to get a second battery here in Germany since I have a GH2 (4 weeks).
A few dealers are claiming that they have it in stock and take 10% more than the list price is.
If you place your order (and have paid) you get an email that they are expecting batteries in one or to weeks. Apart from these its absolutly overpriced.
The battery stands not more than one hour continous filming. Its okay if you have one or to in reserve. Til now I couldnt do any serious work with the GH2, because of missing batteries.
Why does they mess around us??

In the uk the cheapest they are is http://skinflint.co.uk/eu/a575739.html

Slightly less expensive at Robert White in the UK at Ģ46 -- shipping to the States is Ģ12.55. See: http://www.robertwhite.co.uk/product.asp?P_ID=2701

Ordered it on 6 Jan, arrived at the local Post Office here in California on 20 Jan. It is a BLC12E instead of the North American BLC12PP, but it charges and works fine in the camera. A little sorry that I didn't wait until you guys found it cheaper from Panasonic Parts or Video Direct, but I was tired of running out of power after less than a day of shooting.

Not sure that I agree with Vitally that:

Japanese companies must be prosecuted for their batteries (and some other consumables) tricks.[emphasis added] :-)

But at the very least, Panasonic should be called-out on its short-sighted battery strategy, and hopefully, will be embarrassed enough not to do this again. It is a shame to have diminished this great camera in such a petty way.

That's just a Amazon placeholder page, they were never in stock. Like Vitality says Japanese companies will never produce a copy, all the copies in Japan are from overseas, typically China

What is so shortsighted about Panasonic's battery strategy, seems pretty typical of any manufacturer to me, ie no allowing clones of your batteries, all manufacturers change their batteries from time to time, and Panasonics happen to coincide with the international changes to battery shipment policies and thus manufacturing techniques

About PD and GH2 AC adapter.....

Panasonic Direct is a joke. I have tried to contact them through the web and phone re: an order for the GH2 body.
I cannot log-in. I see no record of anything so I have no idea if the order is in or not....
I don't think I will deal with PD anymore.

Where can I get an AC adapter for the GH2? The LUMIX website lists this:

http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh2/optional_accessories.html

So you need both of these?

AC Adapter - DMW-AC8
and
DC Coupler - DMW-DCC8

This price is not only obscene, in combination with a delivery shortage, probably on purpose for marketing reasons, one should boycot them.

Yeah, but the calculator says it will cost $11.69 to ship the tiny thing UPS ground (I'm in USA). That sounds like a not-so-hidden markup to me. Then again, I haven't shipped anything UPS in years, so maybe it costs that much.

Not to put too fine a point on the Video Direct shipping charges, but it would cost $2.10 for B&H to ship a GH1 battery to me UPS Ground...and the two batteries weigh virtually the same. B&H is actually a longer distance from my ZIP code. I know the official Panasonic GH2 batteries are scarce, so I'll assume this is a supply/demand fee on Video Direct's part.

Just got back from the Altai Mts (N Asia) where I used a GH2 for stills and video. Very cold, shooting to -35C and most always below -20C. I found that batteries did much better then expected and generally used 1+ charge a day. I was careful on usage and had econo settings but did not keep camera warm (due to condensation issues, once the camera is cold it must stay that way until the day is done). Generally I would say the batteries performed better then previous still and video cameras I have used in the same situation. I had 5 batteries with me due to paranoia about battery life and never came close to needing them all.

managed to get a spare GH2 battery from ASKDIRECT in London today, they pulled one out of a GH2 box from the kit to do me a favor, good guys, I was desperate..... They are officially out of stock like the rest of the UK!

I just got my battery from Kenmorecamera.com they shipped it fast, I ordered 2 days ago. It did cost me $70 with UPS shipping but it's worth it for me. Now if I could jsut find a DC coupler in stock somewhere i'd be in business.

Well I don't have the batteries from Videodirect as of yet so can't say about their service.. BUT.. they are really slow. I ordered on Monday night and they told me it's in processing and that my card will be charged when the batteries ship out on Monday... So that will probably mean about 10 days or more to get them.. i'm fine cause I don't need them and they are the cheapest but they suck for shipping...

Just thought I'd put that out there. Maybe this is just the one time.. and they are better but 10 days or more isn't a great shipping turn around time.

H&B Digital has them back in stock:

http://www.handbdigital.com/Panasonic-DMW-BLC12-Battery-Digital-Cameras/dp/B004ILN2DE?ie=UTF8&id=Panasonic%20DMW-BLC12%20Battery%20Digital%20Cameras&field_product_site_launch_date_utc=-1y&field_availability=-1&field_browse=2367985011&searchSize=12&searchPage=1&searchNodeID=2367985011&class=quickView&refinementHistory=brandtextbin%2Csubjectbin%2Cpric e&searchRank=salesrank

They're pretty quick; Ships the day of ordering or the next day. USPS First Class mail to Hawai'i was $6.49 and got it in three days.

I'm a little weary of Videodirect.com after reading Justyn's post above. That, and the fact that when you go to their checkout page, its NOT a secure "https". I didn't notice this until right after I made my order so, I called and cancelled my order right away and ordered from handbdigital instead. I'm not saying Videodirect is scamming anyone, I'm just a little cautious about ordering from a website that isn't even secure on the checkout page.

The batteries must be hitting the stores now because I just did a quick search and found them in-stock at several stores, including Adorama, J&R, H and B, and Kenmore.

In a follow up I did get the batteries and they are fine. I got them on the day that they said that they were shipping them out... so all in all worked out fine. I just wish they'd have let me know it shipped and or didn't get me all miffed due to the long time for delivery, which in actuality, wasn't very long at alll.... So they are pretty cheap and I also highly recommend the Panasonic zoom lever. It's small and compact enough to leave on the 14-14 even with the sunshade folded down.... A nice handy addition....

I'm wary of being the first to try cheap chinese batteries in my $1000 camera, but after having my battery run out during filming yesterday and having to wait 1.5hrs to charge it up again, I bought 2 of these bad boys from ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/z618-Battery-Pack-Panasonic-DMW-BLC12-DMC-GH2-New-/140519218671?pt=AU_Cameras_Photographic_Accessorie s&hash=item20b7991def#ht_500wt_1156

z618, never heard of it, but at $10 you can't really go wrong. Unless the explode in my camera or something, in which case I'm going to fly to Hong Kong and go Liam Neeson in Taken-style until I find whoever sold me these things.

Ahem. A little preemptive there. They should arrive in a week or so, so I'll report back once I've tried them out.

For those still looking, Adorama has them listed now. They don't say "In stock" but they don't say "out of stock" either.

EWS,

Did you receive your batteries yet? Is H and B reliable? Never heard of them until now. Too many sketchy small shops in Manhattan, I've walked by plenty of them. So just curious if they are a good shop.

I bought the battery from them and received a genuine Panasonic battery. I would recommend H and B digital.

I get an error message from H and B when trying to "add to cart" so it's a no go for now. Maybe their basic way of saying not in stock.

I got one from here last week. Got my gh2 from there too. Call them to make sure it's in stock
and pull the trigger. They seem to be a little off the road so they have hard to find stuff.

Spare battery with a camera sale only at Texas Media Systems.

Anyone know where you can get 3rd party batteries for the GH2 that last longer? The Official ones cost to much and don't last very long at all. Not worried about battery meter not working.

I keep seeing 2 packs on eBay for $10. But would like some batteries that last at least 2 hours.

The amount of energy a modern Li-Ion battery can contain is pretty much limited by its volume. As the GH2 battery size is limited by design of the camera, nobody can make a higher capacity battery and fit it inside the camera.

Do the third-party batteries work okay in the camera?

The ones I bought off of e-bay work fine, but they don't show how much remaining power you have. I believe only the official Panasonic batteries will give you that.

I have an extra, unused BLC12 battery for sale if anyone needs it. (I lost one of my three batteries, ordered a new one, immediately found the lost one, so I really don't need this one.) I just listed it on eBay, slightly less than the sale price at B&H. (I won't make a profit, but I feel like it would be bad karma to hang onto it when I know supplies have been low in the market.)

You can buy it for $49.99 (free shipping) here: http://r.ebay.com/x1aQ5k
