View Full Version : Built-in hard disk drive?

I have just realized, that if there would be P2 only, I could not make long incessant interviews with the new camera. So would it not be the best, if there would be a built-in hard disk drive, at least as an option? (All under the condition, that there would not be a tape drive.)

...not likely to have one built in . but the option to hang a firewire drive off of it is speculated as being pretty plausable. check some of the other threads where this possibility has been covered here in the HDX section.

Only so many goodies they can get in the camera and keep it in that <$10K price range they are shooting for.

I think the only direct problem for me about this camera will be the recording time. I know it can be about having two p2 cards and the external HD to drop it, but to change it in middle of an interview or a concert... itīs just hard.
And for the prices, it will be difficult for me to buy one of those P2 beauties till they can offer 45 min. or 1 hour of HD footage recorded on them, so maybe one or two years. Unless i can get one of those external hard drives to record through firewire (but for this they should implement on them the DVCPROHD codec... i hope it comes in a near future).
I see advantages over the JVC, 4:2:2, well, itīs more than ok, but uncompressed audio itīs a big point. Just the record time is an issue...
Anyway, i go to bed and dream about machines.i hope everything gets fixed when it come out!

I believe we will see the P2 card cost drop and capacity increase quickly as the camera's release date approaches.

guiyotine: if you can attacj an external firewire drive as weve been speculating, it likely will not have to be a firestore type drive, and could just be a regular external firewire drive writing data to the drive from the camera just like the camera writes to P2 cards. hopefully thats the way it will be. if you can just pick up any 400 gig fiewwire HDD and plug it in and write to it, you wouldnt have o worry about storage. and could make the transition to P2 gradual as it bcomes more affordable to you.

Yes iamloser, thatīs the best option if goes real, then JVC will be out. I donīt care about tape, HDV or interchangeable lenses (iīm following the Micro35 adapter, so...), itīs the storage time the most important issue. The rest are all advantages on Panaīs side.
And iīm able to wait. The camera will be my wedding present for myself ( i wanted a motorbike, but she looked at me as only women can do...) and i want the best for my money. Itīs a pity apple donīt come with these double core double processor monsters... Then i would be jelly.

Be patient, it's going to happen. Maybe not this year, but I expect we will hear something at the next Keynote.

Fascinating! I guess Apple at NAB may introduce more then expected. On a much simpler note, I'm delightly surprised that Apple will come up with a multi-button mouse, with a twist no doubt.

Why coouldn't the New FireStore FS-4 HDpro system be connected to the Panasonic. All it takes is the format to be supported by FS-4 HD.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that whatever incarnation it may be....there will 100% be a Hard Drive solution for the HDX the day it is available....(October / November ??). I'd be willing to part with my Left Testicle if I'm wrong. That's a bold statement but I believe that there is enough circumstantial evidence to support the theory. Mainly the problem of continous recording up to and over one hour of HD footage like weddings and stuff. What does everyone else think? I just think it would be abso-F'ING-lutely preposterous to NOT have a hard disk solution out the gate. How else are we gonna get HD pr0n films made? Just kiddin'....!! ~reservoir~

Nothing to kid about, very important if you make it. It would really Suck if the money shot Came and the P2 filled up and you couldn't pull it out fast enough to stick in a fresh one to capture the Climactic ending of the scene because it Came and went.

In making films and using film stock, there is always the consideration of how much time do you have left on the reel before the scene is filmed. On the P2 cameras, you always know how much time you have left, it is on the display, if it is not enough time or it is close, just dump the card before you shoot the scene, because who would want to miss the money shot!

That's a great thing to have. I know you can't, but just show us a picture.

Oh My Freakin' Gosh....Jan Crittenden said "Who would want to miss the money shot"......That just absolutely slays me. Not only do we have the best industry support for any DV camera by having a company insider hang out in here.....*SHE* has a brilliant sense of humor and is not some stuck up prude!! Jan we love you!! Glad to see you know how to have a good time!! Keep those one-liners coming!! ~reservoir~
I can hear it now....
