Went to a camera expo this weekend:

Not sure if this info is already public, but I talked with a panasonic representative and the form factor is going to be just like the dvx, only slightly larger. The camera will probably begin shipping in the early fall/late summer, not immediately after NAB. HD only P2 cards only, I think.

Panasonic does NOT have plans to release cameras with bigger CCDs for lower price points, and they really don't care about shallow DOF and dynamic range. I think they want to keep the varicam leagues ahead of the DVX and HDX. Apparently, the wave of the future is SMALLER but more advanced CCDs and smaller form factors to go along with them, though development of single foveon-style CCDs appears to be on the horizon, and that could lead to a single 2/3'' CCD, I hope! (The lack of a prism would increase quality/reduce cost, anyhow.)

By the way, Panny's rep was pretty ambivalent about HD. He claimed it really doesn't serve any purpose and is pointless until the market matures and distribution methods develop further than they have.

I also tried Sony's HDV camera. It's pretty darned nice; no compression artifacts during fast pans. For 60i video only, it looks like a great choice and has moderately low noise (better than the DVX) and nice dynamic range. Definitely better than the dvx in automatic mode and probably a fantastic newsgathering camera for the HD era. Bravo, Sony. (But I'm keeping my DVX thank you very much, 480p on the bigscreen didn't look that much lower res than 1080i, and I'm sure cineframe mode reduce the difference even futher.)

I tried an amazing bluescreening system. Not sure of the name but it used some sort of ring that you put over the lense, and they had it set up with a cheap hardware keyer and it was mind blowingly cool, consider they were using a gl2 and getting awesome results in real time.

Not sure if any of the HDV info is new or if it's been contradicted by other info, but there you go.

Also, the Digital Rebel XT is SO NICE. I really want one. If only it show 30fps instead of 3fps.

It's called Reflect Media Chromatte  , I believe it's distributed by Bogen imaging.
I also saw a demonstration with it in L.A. last year at The Roy Wagner ASC Digital Revolution Workshop, truly brilliant.

The XT just came out. It is AWESOME. Unless you have tiny hands or are low on cash, you should go for it. The build quality is excellent and it's just the most refined DSLR I've ever used. Not nearly as rugged or "professional" as the 20d, but the images I saw from it and the quickness it displayed impressed me immensely. It should take photos which are just as good as the 20d, and the burst mode is almost as fast too. (I also like the quiet, smooth but responsive shutter.) Obviously the 20d has more features and is better built, but for the money, the Rebel XT is an awesome piece of hardware. It's really really small, too.

Yeah, that's the keying software they had; it was at the bogen booth. Apparently, they used it for the invisibility cloak in Harry Potter or something. It's pretty amazing and worth checking out if you do a lot of compositing or just like the blow money on toys.

Also, sorry my above post is gibberish-y, I haven't been sleeping lately and it makes me incoherent.

That light ring from bogen imaging is awesome. I saw it at a local show and it was amazing (i guess it better be for 3k). anyway this was the technology they used for harry potter(the cloak) The guy actually had one there and it was cool. it also works at 15 feet away with the special fabric.
Is panna actually releasing a hd type dvx?

HD only P2 cards only, I think.

Not sure I understand this one. so are you saying it records HD only? I thought it was confirmed that it will record in 3 modes. Are you saying P2 for HD only?

i think he meant P2 only.. it was confirmed to be shooting DVCPRO 25/50/100 (HD)

I think he meant (and I didn't express this well) that HD would be to the P2 cards only but that there would be tape as well. But he mentioned P2 cards and didn't mention tape ever. So there probably will be tape, but it won't be HD.

Also, I bet the price includes a P2 card. Oddly, he didn't seem too excited by the camera. Oh well.

That - like the Panavision Platinum before it - should be the form factor Panasonic aspires to. I really dig the wireless hard drives *actually a CineAlta recorder there* mounted where the magazine normally goes. It also mounts to the rear for guys like Pookie.

Sexy. No... that's Fucking Sexy.

That is a good joke. The lens just looks like a blimped one from an Arri Arriflex 16 BL; is it so loud? Or is it just the hard disk drive, that is shaking the whole camera so much?

That's what cinema glass looks like - big - with Panavision mounts you can use Primo Series matched primes (T1.6 thank you) and Digital Zoom Series (all below T2) glass. If you are a fan of Zeiss SuperSpeed and Leica you should worship at the feet of the glass that is Primo. Some cinematographers actually criticize this series for being too sharp.

Flawless T1.6 - T2 glass straight to a Super35mm sized imager - doesn't rely on Bayer system imaging either. 4:4:4 HDSDI and variable frame rate 1 - 50FPS to the CineAlta recorder.

Some specs to respect:
