I just read that it actually doesnt ship till mid-january.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the mid-January is for people who are buying for the first time (since they get a new box and stuff). Everything that I've read still indicates that the upgrade will be sometime this month.

MichaelP, have you heard any word on repackaged extras? For instance will Xpress Pro HD be bundled with Sorenson Squeeze 4 instead of 3? Also, will users who buy the upgrade get the Sonic Fire software? I had heard rumblings at one point that Avid was going to offer the newer / extra 3rd party software to registered users for a nominal fee, but that dropped and I never heard another word about it.
Thanks.

Is the release date still set for 30th and do we just download it from the website.

Yes, the release date is still set for the 30th.
Not sure how we'll get the upgrade. It could be a download, or it could be like when Xpress DV upgraded to Xpress Pro and we'll get a new box, new CDs, and (hopefully) new 3rd Party Software (even though I already paid for Squeeze 4). ;D

It's a 250 MB file, so happy downloading.
Chris
Thanks for the heads up! :) I downloaded it and will install soon. I know it requires SP2, that's the only hairy part. Last time I tried installing SP2, it was disasterous for my machine. Fortunately, a system restore worked. I'll give it another try though. But out of curiosity, I wonder if AXP5 will actually work with SP1?

I am told that Xpress Pro 5 won't even install without SP2. Haven't tried it, as I have SP2, but that's what I hear.
You might want to hold off on installing 5 anyway, after installing it I tried to launch it and got a message that I didn't have authorization to use this version of the software. Come to find out that Avid released the upgrade for the software, but neglected to release the file to update the dongle. Doh! ;D
Word on the street is that Avid tech support is on the case so if I hear anything else I'll post back here.

OK it's fixed. Just be sure to register the upgrade and download the dbhelper.exf file from Avid. This will be used to update the dongle and allow you to run Xpress Pro 5.
Mine is up and running. So far so good.

SP2 is a Microsoft update to the operating system. You can download it from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com
The update can be downloaded after purchase which also gets you a dongle updater.

MichaelP:
Ok, so I installed AXP 5.0 and when Mojo is on, I get a system error. It says something about my hardware encountering a serious error and that I should shut down the application. It seems to be when I scrub through footage. I can give a more detailed error message later.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks and happy new year!

When you installed V5, did it update Mojo's firmware?
I don't have a Mojo, so Michael is going to be your best toubleshooting bet, but I do know that there was a firmware upgrade released. Maybe the error is related to that.
Hope that helps.
Chris

I would do a reinstall. Make sure the Mojo is not on and plugged in during the install. Once you have restarted the computer, turn on the Mojo and the drivers will get updated. Once you launch XPress Pro, the firnware will get updated. That should do the trick.
Michael
On initial installation and program launch, the Mojo firmware was indeed updated. However, I will try a re-installation and see what happens.
Thanks!
-DC-
Ok, I have tried it all again with mostly the same results. :( This time, though, I'm noticing that the picture is occassionally losing some of its RGB-color through the component output. Also, when I scrub through the timeline with my shuttlewheel (EZ Keyboard Pro Series), it re-draws the blue timeline marker at each point where I stop, essentially leaving a "ghost." Seems like a weird glitch. Anyway, the error message still comes up:
Your Hardware Has Detected a Serious Error.
Please Quit The Application And Power Cycle The Hardware.
[Error: DMPort Error]
Error/Status [0x80000013]
(OK)
Your Hardware Has Detected a Serious Error.

Please Quit The Application And Power Cycle The Hardware.
[Error: DMPort Error]

And then it finally goes away. But comes right back upon scrubbing through footage! I am so depressed as I've barely been able to get the last few versions of AXP to work properly. Could it be ANOTHER defective Mojo?! MichaelP, remember that first defective Mojo I had? This second Mojo seems to power cycle and come up ok but I just don't know.
Bottom line is that I need help!
Thanks for trying,

DC, this problem came up on the Avid Xpress Pro user forums. Here's the url. http://www.avid.com/community/forums/Forum38/HTML/011241.html
Pay attention to the posts made by Brian Williams. He works for Avid and has shared a lot of knowledge in the past. This might help you get back up and running.
Good luck.

opinions anyone??...I am in the middle of a project but would really like to get this upgrade. Should I wait till I am done with the current project?
Waiting until you finish a current project(s) is always a wise idea when it comes to upgrading. While AXP HD v5.0 is a very cool upgrade, it has been creating some havok with some users. It's up to you if you want to chance it. Remember, once it is installed, there is no going back (unlike the 4.x to 4.x upgrades).
As of now, I still can't get it to work properly with Mojo.

Actually there is going back. The dongle update still allows you to drop back to 4.6 at any time.
Chris
Oh yeah? When I updated a message came up saying that was not the case. But if it works for you, cool.
Oh, here is a good response from a very helpful guy on the Avid forum regarding my dilema:
"Hi DC
I think your configuration is not 'Kosher' for Mojo.
1. Firewire storage - you don't have a multiple bus motherboard. This means your
Mojo and firewire drives are fighting for attention from the same PCI bus.
2. The onboard firewire controller on your motherboard is not on a seperate bus from
the PCI slots. So all of those devices on your PCI slot [except the ATI which is aAGP device] is all sharing the same pipe.
Try this - stop using using firewire drives and/or move the Mojo to the VIA firewire.
BTW - VIA firewire controller is NOT supported by Avid. You need a Texas Instrument
[TI] chipset.
Also, if I am reading you correctly that VIA chipset is a 1394B card [firewire 800]
- DONT CONNECT your Mojo to this if that is the case. I have read couple of reports
people burning their Mojo via firewire 800 ports."
MichaelP
01-04-2005, 05:33 PM
This is correct. You need a Pyro third party card for the FireWire connection for the storage. The Mojo needs to be attached directly to the firewire on the motherboard (firewire 400). The firewire card in the CPU should be in slot 3.
Thanks for the reply. This makes sense. Now the question is . . . should I get a Pyro Firewire card or just opt for internal IDE drives?
Also, can I get that Pyro card in a Firewire 800 flavor or should I stick with Firewire 400?
Thanks!
-DC-
MichaelP
01-05-2005, 04:56 AM
If you internal, that would be fine. If external, since it is only the drives, either a 400 or 800 is up to you depending on the type of drives you get. But do not put a Mojo on a 800 FireWire connection.
ANOTHER UPDATE:
Ok, so I unplugged my external drive and switched to an internal IDE for testing. The problem got better but not fully corrected. It wasn't until I DISABLED MY WIRELESS NETWORK CARD that Mojo started functioning properly! I played with it for 15 minutes and couldn't get that error message to come up. I will continue to monitor it and report any further problems.
So it seems that Mojo is BUS HUNGRY! This is especially true if you are using a lower powered unqualified system. I advise anyone like me to disable all devices that aren't absolutely system necessary.
I think I'm going to stick with swappable IDE drives for media storage and editing. I'll probably use external Firewire drives simply to move clips to the IDE drives. For example, if I capture with DV Rack then I can move those clips to my IDE drives to later edit with Avid.
Thanks top Dom Silverio and Michael Phillips for their help!

That's funny. It just now clicked in my sometimes slow mind that you were the one who posted on the link I sent you yesterday. Sorry about that. :D
Chris
MichaelP:
I have SATA capabilities on my motherboard. I also see they have hot-swappable mobile racks for those drives.
Would it be ok to use SATA drives with AXP HD? I'm specifically referring to Mojo here. I want to make sure that the SATA is on a completely seperate bus from Mojo. I know IDE is on a seperate bus from Mojo but is SATA?
Thanks,
-DC-
MichaelP
01-07-2005, 06:42 AM
You'll be all set with SATA or IDE since they are the same, but both are not FireWire.
MichaelP:
That's cool. Great news actually! I'll go ahead and set up SATA drives. Maybe even make them a RAID disk array. Probably two 400GB drives. I'll buy those mobile racks that are hot swappable. But would a RAID disk array be hot swappable?
Thanks,

Oh man, that sucks. I have the Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.0 installlation files on a CD-R. I could mail you a copy. It don't think it would be a problem since you're a licensed user. And even if you weren't a licensed user, you wouldn't be able to activate the software without a license.
Send me a private message with your snail mail address and I can get it out to you in the mail asap.

does your hd seem a bit slower than the 4.6. when i open tools such as capture and audio etc. it tends to delay before anything happens and my 4.6 did not do that. do you guys have that problem.
krestofre
02-28-2005, 08:59 AM
HD seems to be much more resource intensive than 4.6 was. If you have an Avid qualified system on the higher spec end of the spectrum, then HD seems to run very well. If you have an unapproved system, then HD seems to have some issue.
I for one have dropped back to 4.6 for the time being. Anytime I would send video out through Firewire it would stutter and be completely unusable. I'll keep using 4.6 until I've worked an Avid Approved system into the budget, then I'll go back to HD.
I know it's not a concrete answer, but it might help you troubleshoot the problem. You can also check the system requirements for Xpress Pro HD on Avid's website as they have changed since Xpress Pro.
Hope that helps.
Chris

what do you mean by avid qualified do you mean memory ram gigs and processor. cuz when i put my computer together for the 4.6 i put more into it than what the specs called for.
krestofre
03-02-2005, 10:00 AM
If you go to Avid's website and look at the System Requirements for Xpress Pro HD, Avid lists a handful of specific make and models of PCs (Dell 670 for example) that are Avid Qualified. That is what I was referring to.

I'm a little confused by your question. If you have Mojo, then that is used as your output device. I.E. Hook your client monitor into Mojo and you have real-time output.
If you mean software only, then yes, it still has DV out, but it also outputs real-time effects based on what your processor can handle (it's really cool if you system is up to it). There is, however, no more blue dot or green dot. Instead it's handled through the Video Display settings. There are two check boxes: one for sending the video out through firewire, and the other for turning on real-time effects. It's really a different way of thinking than blue dot / green dot. This of it more as an on / off switch. You either set Xpress Pro HD to output video via DV, or you don't.
Hope that helps!

In your Project window, under the settings tab, the very last option should be Display Settings. The first two check boxes in the Display Settings control DV output.

Do you have a DV device pluged into the Firewire port prior to launching Xpress Pro HD? I saw those buttons grayed out once and it was because I plugged in my DV camera, but didn't turn it on. Since you're trying to output to a DVD Recorder this suggestion might not be valid. I've never gone straight out to a DVD recorder, but I've read about the setup. Maybe changing the deck configuration to BasicDVGeneric Device (or whatever Avid calls it)?
If your DV device is on then perhaps rebooting the computer will help.
Also, deck configuration and user settings from 4.6 are not compatible with Pro HD, so if you upgraded but are still using your old deck config and user settings that can cause some strange problems. In that case delete the user settings and deck config and recreat them in Pro HD.
Hopefully one of those suggestions will solve it.

Bilgami, I just read another post by you. I didn't realize that you have a Mojo. When you can't get these checkboxes to highlight, do you have your Mojo plugged into the system? I don't have a Mojo myself, but I'm pretty sure that when Mojo is hooked up, then all of your video in and out goes through Mojo.
I'm going to say "Mojo" a couple of more times. Mojo. It just rolls off the tongue. Mojo.
Hope that helps.
