View Full Version : 60p at 1080? What's the truth?

What's the real hard truth about this? Does the AF100 really record 60p at 1080?
Reading the specs this does not appear to be the case; looks like 60p is only active at 720.
Jan, how about it?
Good shooting and best regards,

It does record 1080p at 20 different frame rates, from 12 up to 60.
However, it has access to faster-than-30p frame rates (in 1080) only through overcranking. So you can record 1080/60p, but it will play back at 24p (or 30p). You could, however, go in and change the playback frame rate to 60p and you would have legitimate 1080/60p with the "live" 60p look. But, in the current models audio is disabled when choosing to overcrank or undercrank, so if you want live 1080/60p you'd need to record audio separately.
In 720p, it doesn't do variable frame rates as slow-mo or fast-mo, it only has the stock frame rates; 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60.

Thank you, Barry,
I have no interest in 60/60, only 60/24 for slow motion.
I do find that the specifications published by Panasonic and shown by the likes of B&H do not readily reveal the over-cranking capability. As this is such an important feature, I find it surprising.
On a related note, do you know if there is an engineering menu choice for shooting at lower frame rates? I will sorrily miss my VariCam's ability to shoot down to 1fps. I do use 4fps a great deal; the streaks are quite lovely.
Good shooting and best regards,
Leo

Dear Ticheli,
The nanoFlash allows you to record over and under-cranked from 1 to 60 fps in 720p mode and 1 to 30 fps in 1080 mode.
And you can over and under-crank at any frame rate in the camera while simultaneously record at a different crank rate in the nanoFlash, or choose not to do over and under-cranking at all in-camera and allow the nanoFlash to perform the over and under-cranking.
You get a lot of flexibility with an external recorder that can over and under-crank.
I hope this helps.

What about time-lapse? Will it be able to do that (w/out an external recorder)? Of is 12fps the slowest available?

That's exactly what it does, and at full res -- not "upconverted 720" or anything like that.

Agreed, and I've been badgering them for exactly this. I've begged for at least 4fps. On the HVX200/HPX170, we found that you could hack the frame rate and get it down to 2fps; combined with a 360-degree shutter it made for gorgeous fast-motion streaks. As of right now the official word is 12fps for the slowest frame rate, but I do look forward to seeing if the same frame rate hack will work.

Have you got Kholi working on this one?

Kholi's working full time on "Superseeds", his feature film being shot on the Red. He won't have time to be messing with new cameras for quite a while... :)
