Will the AVCHD files from the AF - 100 work with mainconcept's avchd to dvcpro converter.
I remember getting an email that this product will be supported by panasonic till dec 2010 .

Higher colorspace to work in, less compression to work in, easier codec to work with and not as taxing on processing power.
However you lose some vertical resolution. Unless your workflow specifically needs DVCPROHD, there's no reason not to use ProRes instead.

I edit in premiere CS4.2
Advantages when using panasonics free mainconcept avchd to dvcprohd converter :
-Realtime editing because it less processor intensive then avchd......Especially with documentary when you got days / hours of footage.
-Grades better then the native avchd files because the colorspace has increased abit when converted to dvcprohd ...I know ..believe me its better.
-Dvcprohd is a stabel codec doesnt crash when you want to speed up 8 min clips ala landscape timelapse.
add: it has been my experience that avchd crashes or CS 4 Premiere crashes when speeding up clips.
-Doesn't do "crazy jump frame" when exporting your final edit to other codecs like mpeg2, avi oldskool !, h264 etc
add : Almost every attempt with editing avchd files produces some irregular result when exporting these files .
Disadvantage :
-You will need more Hard drive spaces :P

Beat me to it ......This is bearly noticable IMO
So you recommend ProRes? I'm looking online a bit to see the process. Does this mean you have to import the footage into your editor and then export it as prores? Must be a simpler way..
Also curious to know how much more space is required when converting avchd to either dvcpro or prores.

Aha, cineform neoscene. And only 130 bucks, sounds like a sweet bargain for what it does!

I can't think of why they wouldn't. It's standard AVCCAM recording... only thing is that maybe there'd be an issue regarding the uncompressed audio maybe? But if you use AC-3 audio I'm 100% certain it would work.

Downloaded and tested it on some preliminary AF100 footage, and it does work.
Note: when downloading it, the website says that the converter will only be available until November 26th. After that, it's gone. So if anyone wants it, or thinks they may someday want it, they'd better grab it now.

Im talking about the one /version that you can download from Panasonic's website
That works with panasonics avccam footage only !
and its free till november 26th like Barry mentioned after that its no more.
And 8gb of Avchd footage is about 38-39 GB of DVCprohd footage!
holy moly.
Care to post the link for others to take advantage of? :D

Not to be a pedant (OK, maybe a bit of a pedant ...) but it is horizontal resolution that is sacrificed in the DVCPro HD anamorphic dimensions. 1280x720 instead of 1440x720, or 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1080. The loss is on the horizontal axis, and would be by definition 'horizontal resolution'.
