View Full Version : Jan, Anyone, When Can We See AF-100 Footage?

Dear Jan, any panny experts or folks who have used the prototypes,

When will we be able to see some footage out of the camera?

I was amazed at the hd-sdi output at the entertainment technology expo in new york, as well as the camera itself, but we're all so eager to see how this camera acts in the field.

With your upcoming December release date, when will some test footage (or this Italian short some members are buzzing about) be available for us to check out?

Will there be a way to see any footage before the December release date? Or will we have to hold on until the first owners start posting shorts on vimeo?

Cheers,
Jason

Before I buy, I really want to see some "fresh out of the camera" video - no Vimeo recompression, etc.

Hello,

I was just about to ask the same thing. :)

You saw some footage via the hd-sdi output? wow!

I would love to see the difference between the hd-sdi output and the avchd 24 mb mode footage.

I was hoping the difference would not be so good so I don't have to buy the 2000 grand recorder. ;)

I remember she had a post that implied that it's best to post footage on line only when the camera is about finished in order for people to not jump into conclusions on a preproduction unit and also said that if you wait until footage is posted and interest builds up because of it, it'll be a while until you can get your hands on one.

All I can say is we know how long it took for the HVX200 and especially the GH1 to become easily available

Might be November. But we will see, still have to test the camera that came in yesterday to see if it is ready for scrutiny. If it doesn't pass then it will be November.

If anyone needs a place to host any demo footage from the AF-100 (when it does become available), drop me a line.

hope the af100 gets finalized soon.. i want to see a preproduction model already! :)

I have to agree that any purchasing decision we make is dependent on how the AVCHD footage looks, particularly in the shooting environments we have.

If Mikko is willing to host raw files, that would be great.

We bought the HVX200 more than five years largely because of the UCLA basketball cheerleader footage that Jarred posted. Wish I still had it. :)

I'm not looking for internet footage. I like to see downloadable AVCHD footage.

I'd like to second this request for some raw footage to work with. Preferably something which spans the spectrum of imagery - something dark, something light, something which pushes the DR, some greenscreen...

Of course, I don't know how often such a request is honored prior to camera release...more likely to just wait around and bother a local rental house to do some tests.

Is it your desire to see footage to examine compression related artifacts of AVCHD? Do you believe compression artifacts would be any different from other AVCCAM videos? Perhaps I did not understand correctly in my thinking that the AF100 recorded in the same codec as all AVCCAMs.

The sensor is bigger and has more pixels than any other AVCCAM. Since we know that DSLRs with similar sensors have some problems with video, it's definitely worthwhile to see AVCHD footage to see how well the sensor, OLPF and whatever other processing come together.

Well, compression artifacts are one thing. I'm also interested in seeing how it handles noise and tonal gradations at the extremes of exposure (both when a scene is more or less completely dark/bright, but also when the scene contains both extreme dark and bright). I don't shoot green screen often, but would be interested in having some footage available to test in relation to other cameras.

And, to be fair, I do think the compression may differ from other AVCCAM videos. Just because two cameras use the same compression scheme doesn't mean they do them equally as well. The results will be similar, no doubt, but I believe there are likely to be subtle differences.

Someone should put this in big bold letters - I'm still astonished at how difficult it is to find real footage from so many cameras online; yet I see so many requests getting answered with links to crunched-up YouTube clips, which can sometimes make even DSLR video look acceptable.

When the camera passes the tests that we have for final footage, we will post it. Not before. With the internet community being so critical, posting premature footage would serve no one. So soon but not just yet.

Thanks for the patience.

Working with Panasonic cameras 10 years now, no doubt about it's quality and proffesionalism. IŽll wait to see but preoder now.

Would it be right to expect the codec to be exactly the same as in the HMC150 series cameras?

It's not exactly the same, because the PH mode in the AF100 supports uncompressed LPCM audio in addition to the AC-3 audio supported by the HMC series. Other than that, I would guess it's the same.

Very sensible. Thanks again for your presence here, Jan. It's great to be able to interact more directly with companies on forums.

This post makes no sense. The user who you quoted did not want to see internet compressed video because compression reduces the quality of your original file. You are making it seem like compressed youtube videos make your files look better :thumbdown

Also stop with the DSLR bashing as many many great projects have been shot with those cameras.

Just to clarify what I meant (not turn this into an argument) - reducing the resolution would hide aliasing, moire etc. I know the user I quoted didn't want to see compromised video, I was referring to other posts.

There is no need to bash DSLRs because like you say, people have successfully worked around their limitations. In any case, their shortcomings are well documented and to me as a video tech-person, blatant.

Bring on the AF100 footage is all I can say...

Erm...it sounds to me like Lyris is all in favor of raw footage. He wants the request to be put in big bold letters and he is frustrated with 1) how difficult it is to get raw footage and 2) the fact that people post "crunched-up" internet compressed footage...

Confusion...

I found this on vimeo right now. I think this is the first AF100 footage on the net. Im waiting to see more.
