View Full Version : So...... about that DVCPRO recording.....

Well, looking over all of this news, P2 doesn't sound like too bad of an idea! Though, I'll probably have to buy a 100gb laptop hard drive for my Alienware computer along with the P2 offloading device (the one with the 60gb hard drive integrated).
In all of this however, we still don't have any idea as to whether there is a Mini-DV casette slot on this camera for regular DVCPRO recording.
Now, if DVCPRO50 can be recorded for about double the amount of what can be recorded on DVCPROHD, what about regular DVCPRO? If we can record that on tape or for like a half and hour on P2 then I'm all for this camera 100% (right now I'm at 90% ;D). Another question I have is; if we record on DVCPRO, will the footage be DVX100A caliber but with somewhat higher resolution (possibly exceeding the XL2), better colors, and true 16:9? So that if we can't afford the P2 cards or can't afford 2x 4gb cards (assuming there is no tape) in order to shoot for long periods of DVCPRO50 or DVCPROHD footage, we can simply have the best looking standard definition DVCPRO footage in this price range on tape or on one single P2 card? I don't know if DVCPRO qualifies as SD, I'd imagine it would since there's the distinction between DVCPRO/DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD.
So, what do you all think?

Are you looking for a definitive answer or just campfire speculative ramblings?

Well, I was kind of hoping for an answer.
A question with a question leads to little answer.
No answer. Camera does not exist yet, nor has it been announced. We can speculate about rumors or even what might be a rumor if someone had started it, but that is less productive than answering a question with a question. :) ;D

Jack i just read you thread and i was making the same question in another one. ;D
And i still do work with my XM1 (GL1)! We are probably thinking around the same idea; just looking for an improvement after long duty for our machines and figuring out if it will be useful to jump the new HDX, or go for sure good looking DVX.
I will wait anyway till NAB to see, they got me right. I thought for a second on Z1, looked perfect but i was surprised with Pana rumor, then dumped HDV idea.
I love rampaging over rumors, itīs national sport here in Spain and make people guessing till the right moment. Without this, life would be boring. And Pana probably will surprise all of us. At least everybody keeps smiling and blinking eyes so itīs worth the wait.

>:( *:D Well, theoretically based on what we DO know:
1. DVCPRO/DVCPRO50/DVCPORHD format
2. True 16:9
3. P2 shooting
Would the regular DVCPRO footage theoretically look better than the current DVX Mini-DV footage if the 24p is on equal footing (ie. not sucktastic like Cineframe 24 on the Sony FX1/Z1)?
There, is that better? It's odd to me how we can speculate all we want about DVCPROHD shooting but nobody can answer my simple question. :)
mr._guiyotinne, that's pretty interesting as I am currently on the GL1 as well! ;D Just can't seem to get rid of it, one month after I bought it, BAM! GL2 comes out. Then the DVX100/A, then the XL2, then the FX1/Z1, and now this. I should have waited darnit! :( Oh well, it isn't too bad I suppose, it's much better than some VHS-C camera my family was using for Christmas Videos.

Yes it will look better than a dvx100a.

I know this is what we want to hear. :D
But will it be better because CCDs resolution (new and denser) even if we loose like 1 or 2 stops of light? and the ability to save to P2 sure, make things faster...
Zig, i didnīt understand your last words, where they a joke or serious thinking of leaving this fun guessing sport? forgive me if i didnīt catch it. :-/

In all of this however, we still don't have any idea as to whether there is a Mini-DV casette slot on this camera for regular DVCPRO recording.
I thought this had been confirmed? I thought Jan said there WOULD be a miniDV tape mechanism. Am I crazy here? Anyone else know if this was confirmed?
Now, if DVCPRO50 can be recorded for about double the amount of what can be recorded on DVCPROHD, what about regular DVCPRO?
On a 4gb P2 card you could record roughly 16 minutes of DVCPRO, 8 minutes of DVCPRO-50, or 4 minutes of DVCPRO-HD.
If we can record that on tape or for like a half and hour on P2 then I'm all for this camera 100% (right now I'm at 90% ;D).
Welcome to the 100% then, as I'm pretty certain that you can record DVCPRO on tape with the camera, and with two 4gb cards you could record over half an hour on P2 as well. (assuming you can record its DVCPRO25 mode on P2, that is!)
Another question I have is; if we record on DVCPRO, will the footage be DVX100A caliber but with somewhat higher resolution (possibly exceeding the XL2), better colors, and true 16:9?
Raw speculation. Nobody can answer that yet. My wild guess is that after comparing the XL2/DVX against the FX1, there were still areas where the XL2/DVX held the advantage over the FX1, specifically in latitude and sensitivity. So I'm guessing (GUESSING!) that the new camera, barring any technological innovations, would perform in SD about where the XL2 does. Native 16:9 imaging, and 960x720 CCD's (I am making a GUESS on the CCD size, because the XL2's CCD is 960x720, and DVCPRO-HD's frame size is 960x720...) Nobody should quote this, this is just random speculation to try to get you more to think about.
we can simply have the best looking standard definition DVCPRO footage in this price range on tape or on one single P2 card?
I wouldn't say that yet. The PD170 certainly has advantages that the FX1 can't match, and I expect that a similar situation may arise with the DVX/HDX (I think I'm going to adopt that name as "legit" -- it just sounds so cool when you think of the SDX and then the HDX...)
I don't know if DVCPRO qualifies as SD, I'd imagine it would since there's the distinction between DVCPRO/DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD.
DVCPRO (aka DVCPRO-25) is most definitely SD. As is DVCPRO-50.

If so, I missed it. I saw that Steve Mullen and others claimed it would have tape recording, but I never saw Jan say it. Of course, it's probable that I just didn't see the post (or saw it and forgot). Does anyone have a link for this?

I dunno... maybe I got it mixed up with Steve's post. But I thought Steve just said that it *wouldn't* have tape?

Will DVCPRO50 record to DV tape if there is indeed a tape mechanism? Or only to P2 cards...

Looking back, I think you're right. With all the rumors swirling around, I have no idea where I've heard anything anymore.

Well, I don't recall that Steve's post said that the camera would not have tape, but I definitely remember that it didn't say that it would.

From what I recall, Jan said: DVCProHD and DVCPro50 will be to P2, tape is for standard DV on MiniDV tape.
