My beat is - Gonzo filmmaking. And I want great quality. Enter HD. But not the shoulder mounted ones. The AJ`s. Difficult to film POV with those monsters. Therefor enter HDX100. It`s like my DVX, only HD. Perfect for that "Shooting from the hip" look that I love. I`ll be that kid in school again. Only this time its Hi-Def. Great. I really love this concept. Also - I don`t need a deck. Saves me $ 21.000. (My films goes straight to DVD. No need for tape.) I`ll need two P2H cards. When the first is filled, I just put it in my PowerBook, transfer the HD footage to the harddrive and starts using it again. AND - no drop-outs. Bounce the camera to the floor - clean footage (but a broken camera).
I wonder how much GB the p2H cards will hold.
In my situation, my way of working, I need long takes, without breaks. A P2 H card with 4 GB is to small.
Maybe Panasonic will produce a tiny, portable hardrive with 40/60/80 GB. Ideal for long shoots. Anyway - these things exist already. Or do they?! Will those portable video harddrives work with the HDX100?

Anyway. You make my day, Panasonic. Once again.
Thanx

Panasonic has already announced a 60gb hard disk with an attached P2 card reader. So you could load up a couple of P2 cards in the camera, and as soon as one's full you pull it out, plug it into the P2/drive thing, and offload it, while continuing to record on the other card in the camera. When the drive's finished offloading the full card, you plug it back in the camera... keep trading cards, and as long as you have enough hard disk space you could theoretically record forever...

(note: this presupposes that the HDX will have two slots, which is something we don't know for sure yet).

It'd also be nice if the camera supports HD-over-firewire, so we could get a FireStore-type of device for direct-to-disk recording as well. Of course, someone would have to make a compatible FireStore thing too, but I'm sure something like that will be forthcoming.

OK! You got me! What is Gonzo Filmmaking?

It's a riff off of Hunter Thompson's Gonzo Journalism. Thompson would often put himself into his stories instead of take the more tranditional journalist position of staying aloof from the subject and maintaining a fly on the wall position. I'm guessing that Feroxfilm is putting himself into his films.

This is a great point, but I wonder if Panasonic would offer a firewire spigot, wouldn't that potentially cannibalize P2 memory card sales?

I would suppose that P2 cards would be preferable in extreme conditions where hard drives would get a beating.

:P

(I believed Gonzo filmaking = porn movies (I can't associate filmaking and porno... sorry))

Though I doubt Panasonic will market it as such, the hdx will be, in fact, the ultimate porno camera.

Everybody is getting so wet (me include) with this camera, so... 8)

Then I can understand why Feroxfilm will want to be "putting himself into his films." *;D I mean, who would want to miss out on the "action"? 8)

Wow, this has been a such busy week, this just passed completely under the radar. Very sad indeed. He was an author during a time of "growing up" and shaped me in opinions of Richard M. Nixon, the Vietnam War and the Presidential Campaign of 1972. It was the first time I got to vote. He was/has been a part of my humor adlib ever since.

Tis a shame that people can't figure out what the demons are that haunt, them that killing oneself seems easier than living. A loss, I hope he is happier on the other side.
