Ok, NAB, i think is the week of the 18th through the 23rd of April.

So I'm going with the week of June 20th or if it has to be an date then June 20th the day after father's day.

I'm giving 2 months after the first day of NAB.

As I remember, the DVX100 was announced at April 2002 and first sold in October - that were six months of waiting. BUT I DO NOT WANT TO WAIT EIGHT MONTHS FROM NOW FOR THE NEW CAMERA!!!

It will be releaed too late, that's when. By that time the market will have established an excellent workflow with the Sony FX1 and nobody will want to make additional efforts to make the new camera work. If anyone will be able to compete for a second place, that will probably be the JVC. I really don't think Panasonic will be able to enjoy the success that they had with the DVX100A.

October 10th, 2005 (I think Robert Niemann has the right idea based on the past NAB -> Release, I just threw the "10th" in there :))

won't enjoy the success of the DVX?

that's a joke... FX1--MPEG HDV, no 24p... think a HD version of the PD-150 with less professional applications

HDX may not sell as many units because it'll be more expensive. but you can bet it's going to enjoy taking down the FX1 and any JVC knockoffs...

I'm sure panny is going as fast as they can and still meet reliability concerns. But really, there's no dvd distribution till at least the middle of the year anyway...

I don't think that's correct. The FX1 is not perfect but it's proving to be wxcellent, and far better than the PD-150. MPEG HDV is not any worse than DV. Actually, when I look at the footage, I much prefer it.

As for 24p, whoneeds it really? If you film50i or 60i, if you ever need to transfer to film, trust me there are companies perfectly confortable with the conversion process. They have years of experience. And I believe that HDV 60i, HDV50i (or even HDV CF25) will look a lot better on film than DV 24p. When looking at the frames, there is really no comparison.

And there is no doubt that Panasonic is too late. Sometimes in the market you have to be fast. If they market their product in 2006, by that time I'm sure even my telephone will capture HD resolution film on memory cards ;D

While I agree with this in one sense, I think that it's ALMOST too late. If I were to guess on release date, as in you can get it at your house, not just see pics online.... I would say novemeber 2005. I think the real key is other the players. If Canon does what I think they will do, they will release the GL3 with 24P HD/HDV with 720P lower priced than the FX1 within the next 3 - 6 months. If they get it on the market before the new Panasonic does, I think THAT will be the cam that make it really tough for Panasonic. Unless there is a concrete release date soon, people in the wait and see category needing a new cam would likely go the Canon or the Sony for "future proofing" as it's been dubbed... HDV or not.

Hehe! The Panny will be as succesful as any other camera. There's room in the market for everyone. The problem here is that people are assuming that every single person will have ditched their SD cameras and bought an FX1 or Z1 within the next yeat. That of course is a ridiculous assumption.

All those PD150's, 170's, DVX100's etc all have to be owned by someone. They aren't all going to an electronics junk heap. Heck you can still buy a brand new Hi-8 camera if you want!

Panny's new camera will have a place in the market, otherwise all other manufacturers shouldn't have bothered to release their own MiniDV cameras after Sony released the first one.

Personally I don't see the rush everyone is in. Pretty much nobody here will ever in a million years pay for a film out. When a client pays me for a video they want something that pretty much anybody can watch, and that means either DVD or VHS. Clients have only just started asking me for DVD over VHS now! So even if Blu-ray or HD DVD became available tomorrow, even if those formats had an affordable burner available, I'll leave you to work out the commercial viability of moving my freelance business over to HD and HD distribution. Sure it's coming, but if people think it's going to come in faster than DVD did (and some people STILL don't have DVD players) then it's cloud cuckoo land.

Calm down people. What is there to lose by having to wait a bit longer? Certainly not clients!

With all due respect, this talk is silly. You could have said the same thing about the DVX, that it was "too late" against the PD150 (it was about two years after the PD150's release). Yet it managed to carve out a nice little niche for itself.

Nobody knows what features the HDX will have, and I think pronouncements if it being "too late" are WAY too early.

I wouldn't rush into that judgement. The FX1 & Z1 are terrific for what they offer. However Panasonic is offering (as we know it) a HD solution at 4:2:2 at a frame rate of 24p all without the use of a tape (P2 cards)

The DVX was revelutionary, and so will be the HDX100. Even at a price point of $9999. ( assuming that at 10 grand it comes fully loaded with a pair of P2's)

Kidster don't be surprise if they throw in an adapter socket for Juan Pierteira's 4:4:4: uncompresed mod and many of the Varicam's features priced at $9,999.99. Just my 2 cents. I estimate that the HDX will be released in September of this year.
