View Full Version : those little things we wish to have in the HDX
so it looks like Panasonic, the makers of the revolutionary DVX, will soon introduce us with a new breakthrough in the field of digital cinematography, that will hopefully carry on even farther with the DVX concept of "camera made for cameramen/women" that gave us those little things that made it so great (i.e. the spot meter, the readouts in the viewfinder..). and even though it's maybe too late and a finished product is quietly laying somewhere in the top-secret labs of Panasonic, let's *wish some things for the baby to come -- you can never know ;)
(please, Panasonic, please!)
iris ring on the lens *
p.s.
try not to wish for what you already *know* is not there.. i.e. no "35mm CCD's" etc....

well i can still hope for 1/2 inch CCD, well 3 of them even.
The other thing is that they make the storage medium so cheap as possible. 4:2:2 is whatīs going to be really great about this cam.
Itīs almost that I will buy this cam just to help kill of HDV-format that I strongly believe is just a consumer format.
hmm. . ...
even more control on the picture
individual RGB balance
more gamma settings
damn... i would pay just to see a silhouette of this camera

HDV will... well, IS DOA, Why my family will like to have an HDV cam for holydays? rather stay with minidv and the moment they can afford an HD tv they will jump to HD consumer cams...

- Oh yes, iris ring!
- 3x 1/2" CCDs. Or, I wonder if a single 2/3" could do the trick?
- CRT b/w viewfinder with at least 360 lines.
- I like the idea of the LCD screen placement on the FX1.
- No need for on-board mics.
- If DVCProHD supports up to 8 audio streams, it would be nice to have at least 4 mini-XLR inputs on the HDX.
- Lens just long enough to be able to achieve shallow DoF.
- Same battery types of DVX.
- Same 72mm thread size as DVX to use same attachments.
- P2 is nice, but I'd get rid of the tape transport in favor of a removable 2.5" hard drive.

Hehe!, Flintstone maybe we can wish it for the next Sony... ;D
I'm personally very happy with the iris dial on the DVX. I don't see any reason to do that differently :).
And we have another thread dedicated to this already I believe :D

hahaha.... sigh. :)
what the dvx lacks, even after the "A" version came, is a solid feel on the lens, solid rings to play with. the iris ring doesn't work well all the time (not always gradually smooth, sometimes just freaks out on me), dont know how is it with your cameras.. but i've heard of it from other users too.
and the zoom, i'm personally not the heavy zoom user... but when i had good resistance from a zoom ring on 16mm cameras, i could and liked very much to zoom manually. the hand grip zoom is to me unusable on the DVX. it just starts very sudden, not smooth at all.
and since, on the other hand, many things are *so* made for you, the operator, that i wish for some more perfection on the next one.
yeah i know... it's almost pointless now... maybe we should move the thread to the cafe . . it's just me being anxious :-X

And/or directly transferable via firewire or SD card, or P2 card, to another HDX cam to match the settings.

It will be around 5,500 $ with a P2 2-4GB card included. This way they will be breaking the five thousand barrier for quality products so the prosumers will step up and became another market by themselves. We are now, but not so obvious than it will be in this moment.
Just a guess anyway. I wish it was under 5,000 but i donīt believe it. Somebody make me a believer, please!
put the whole HD thing aside.. just thinking it will be progressive DVCPRO50 . . . that's so enough for me right now.
and no.. i can't believe it will be under 5,000 . . no way..
if it's really going to be a DVCPRO 25/50/100 -- my bet is more towards $7,000, and that's exactly filling the gap between prosumer and professional, between the 5 grand group and the over $10,000
and all this PR step, the "leak", almost 2 months before NAB, which is the most natural occasion to announce this camera (not like.. hmm.. Canon did with XL2) -- what i'm saying is, it looks like Panasonic have big plans for the HDX.

That'll be great for balancing the cam if you have a Mini35 adapter with a nice prime lens.

Analogic memory card to save the configuration Aka Post-its and pen place...
I want an SLR style system for the view finder.
that would be pretty sweet.. no low-res footage.
dreaming away...

Varicam style variable frame rates. Maybe Jan or Barry can explain why it wouldn't be feasible on a DVX-esque camera, but myself and just about all the filmmakers/music video directors/dp's that I know, would kill for something like this.
In an ever growing smaller world of HD/16:9/24p, slow motion is one element, if added to the camera, where I think Panasonic would simply destroy the competitors. Realviz & twixtor is just a pain in ass to use.
I'd buy it tomorrow, just for that aspect, and use it for all upcoming films/videos.

lots of framing guides in viewfinder/LCD to toggle (no more taping the LCD for letterbox)
very important and missed on the DVX - under-scan image (dont want this mattebox in the frame again :( )

Variable frame rates are certainly practical. On the DVX for example, you can shoot at frame rates of (at least) 4, 6, 8, 12, 15, 24, and 30 progressive frames per second, and also 60 interlaced fields.
Now, whether the new camera will offer faster (or more) frame rates remains to be seen.
