The movie that started my love affair with aircraft carriers and the United States Navy.

Just picked up the 2-disc set and watched it for the first time in many years. *The DTS 6.1 soundtrack is FABULOUS, though the ambient sound drowns out the dialogue here and there (nothing too serious). *The picture looks as good as a 25 year-old movie that wasn't well taken care of can. (And, in an ironic twist, I watched it on a Mitsubishi HDTV.)

But now that I know what I'm doing with editing, I sure can see where it could have used some more work -- even things as simple as appropriateness of score. *Great music, but a little misused in some spots.

From a writing point of view, it has some bumps and bruises, and doesn't really have an ending. *It's always interesting to watch the trailers, though, because they usually reveal interesting bits of scenes not found in the movie itself, and this is no exception -- there are a few cut spoken words which would have ironed out a few spots.

But good lord, I love it! * ;D ;D ;D The last of my must-have movies to finally make it to DVD (except the Conspicuous Trilogy).

Ironically, considering the movie was released in 1980, the downing of the two Zeroes actually would have marked the first and second kills, ever, for the F-14.

Tks for the review! I have thought about picking this one up. This movie ranks up there pretty high with me. A classic.

Damn this would make a good remake.

Hmmmm . . . . on the fence about that one. I see an awful lot of moralizing about things like dropping the Bomb, etc., etc., which the original didn't deal with and I could do without.

But updating the flying sequences and so on would be quite appealing . . .

I see your point. Still, it happened.

Thats kind of what pissed me off about Pearl Harbor (Well, that and the fact that Michael Bay did it) is that everyone was all stressed out about portraying the Japanese as "bad and evil" in the film and basically were afraid to tell it like it was.

There were a few MORE problems with "Pearl Harbor," John . . . ;D ;D

This is very true, yes.
