i'm in burbank for now. i'd go. what exactly would happen at these meetings? would it be a group of like-minded indie videomakers pooling together their resources to help produce each other's work? that'd be pretty awesome. everyone comes to the group with a proposal, budget, script, whatever and then you would all work together to make them happen.

Rest assured, plans are being made.

Stay tuned.

I used to moderate the MAGNet meetings back in 98'-99'.
(Los Angeles Mirai User Group) back when it was still under Nichimen.
www.izware.com

Like help finding the spot to hold the meetings and getting the agenda together for what we should do. *Trying to get monitors to display stuff etc... finding people and getting topics together regarding the software. *

I was heavy into 3D at the time, so topic and finding people to talk/share about was easy to put together.

I haven't much experience in camera... All this is new to me, but I'll be willing to moderate this group if we can get a little help from Panasonic in terms of sponsoring meetings if we need it. *Maybe some raffle goodies on occassion. That way, the meetings were free.
*
(or if not... then we'd have to fund it ourselves if we need)

I think I have a couple spots in the L.A. area we might be able to meet at, as long as there's less than 50 people.

The only thing we would need funds for would be for grub most likely. *Alot of people came all the way from Santa Barbara to San Diego, so at the time, Nichimen forked some dough for pizzas & sodas.

I work in Burbank, but live near Manhattan Beach.

I'm in North Hollywood (Valley Village), I'm in!

One thing - say a certain person (Mr. Bigglesworth , we'll call him for now) Didn't, quite yet, own, persay, a DVX-100a yet. Would that person be able to attend said meeting? In the hopes of helping, learning, apprenticing (sans Trump) others until such time he had money saved from upcoming job to afford his gear?

Such a meeting tickles Mr. Bigglesworth's fancy.... alright! you got me, he's Dr. Evil's cat from Austin Powers!! Fine, I mean ME okay! :'( MEEEEE!

Seriously, though it would be awesome to meet and network with people of the same interests, and meet the personalities behind the Avatars - the E! True Hollywood-ish Story.

"We should write up some kind of a schedule of what we are going to do, so that we can see about how long it would take. *Any body have any suggestions?"

Some thoughts:

Seems like it'd be about 2 1/2-3 hours. I went to LA indie film group and that seemed about right. Some suggestions: 30 minutes introductions going around the room, maybe 15-30 minutes of member screenings, maybe a product demo (ex: if anyone had the mini35 or something cool like that) or some guest speaker, or maybe announcements of member projects coming up (crew calls, etc), and of course enough time to just chill and meet people and talk.

That sounds just about right to me. I talked to the sales manager and she said she would never support a meeting like that.

Unless EVS springs for a buffet and music for the first DVXuser/EVS meeting. ;) I tried to talk her out of it, but she was set on it, and she managed to convince the owners it would be a cool gig. I guess she turned it into a party.... I told her pro's don't wanna come over and eat free food and listen to a DJ, they wanna talk tech and stuff. She said ya'll can talk tech while yer eating. I dunno about that. What do you guys think? :D Probably would have to be a Saturday.

We should have everyone vote on a timeslot. I'm coming from the High Desert (nearly 2 hours away), so if it starts around 2-3 p.m., then that means I'm driving back in rush hour traffic. Does this effect anyone else?

My vote would be around 12 noon? but we should hear everybodie's so we can get whats good for the most people.

Slimothy
01-26-2005, 08:21 PM
BTW: I think Feb. 12th is a good day for the first one. Gives just enough time for everyone to prepare.

ChuckS
01-27-2005, 01:50 AM
Here are a couple of thought:

I think Saturday is best – especially if we have it at EVS and they are closed [if EVS doesn’t mind] It might be very difficult to have it there while their open and if we do it on a work day after they close traffic will suck.

We should start developing an agenda – is this just a warm and fuzzy get together or is there an opportunity to arrange for presentations from Serious Magic or Panasonic etc.. If we had an agenda, it might be easier for vendors to decide if they want to participate.

If we set a date we need to get a serious head count, so EVS can plan accordingly.

I would also suggest that we break the user meeting into two segments, the first part more of a social interaction with an opportunity for vendors to demonstrate their products and for all of us to have a casual discussion. The second part should be a little more about the business of creating a real user group, which could take an hour or so.

Just some thoughts. ::)

Hi guys, after the sales manager looked at the size of our interior space at EVS, she decided there is no way to fit that many people there. We had 50 people over for the Xmas party, and even then we had to put people on 6-foot stilts. ;D So she got an offsite location, for Feb.11th. Apparently the location is not available the 12th, and neither are some of our people. So would the 11th (Friday) be okay? We are working out last minute details as far as time, and locking in the catering and all that. I hope that doesn't inconvenience a lot of folks. Let me know... ;)

Damn. I couldn't make Friday night. I would bet that many couldn't either. Friday night traffic? Forget about it.

Personally I would rather do it somewhere else (other than EVS or EVS sponsored local) on a Saturday if necessary. What do others think?

I don't know how many people there would be though. I would guess more like 20. Still not enough room for that many at the EVS location, Rush?

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum but I would go. I live in Burbank. We could reserve the new Library that's on Verdugo and Hollywood way. They would let us use the conference room there once a month. I believe it provides more than enough space. The library is open until
9:00pm. Plus being so close to production facilities would allow us to invite some great guests. And being right next to the studios is always fun to see. Any thoughts on this? Either way I would attend.

You didn't miss anything. There might have been a few guys who got together at someone's house, but the original plan was to have a big fat meeting with catering somewhere in Glendale. Rush was going to get EVS to sponsor it but it hasn't happened, yet.

If you're shooting in LA I'd really like to meet you, maybe visit you on the set. If that's cool. I'm in pre-production on my first movie. Very low budget (under $7000) and will be shooting in Glendale/Covina in the summer.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond here guys. Since the site changed, I didn't get notification of reply to this thread. Too funny that you're shooting in Glendale/Covina. I live in Claremont which is like 15 minutes from there. A majority of the production will be in Claremont with a couple of shots in Santa Monica (interiors). This may change as the script changes. I have a first draft done, but might be altering it. The idea is to shoot a short film to use as a sales tool for a feature version of the larger concept. Drop me a PM or an email and let's chat, k?

I'd like to get a group of DVXusers together to shoot this thing. Anyone interested in this? Let me know.

To answer your question:
Elvis, go check out my thread on my first short. It's in the clips section of this site called "the message universal". My background is in animation storyboards and comic books but I'm stretching into film. Working on the feature screenplay version of comic book right now and it's been optioned (Don't want to post with whom right now).

Hi guys,
I would love to be involved in a local DVX user group, I'm a rookie (just got my DVX yesterday from EVS) but would be happy to help if I can or just participate to get this group off the ground.

Storyteller - I live in Rancho Cucamonga, if you need someone to help as a second camera let me know since I'm so close to ya. I need the practice with this thing! I also have a Beaulieu 4008 Super8 (I know old skool....but thats what has lead me to the DVX).
Ciao

Hi Brandon,
You and your camera would be most welcome on the set (ya can leave the super 8 behind though :cheesy: ). But just so you know, I already have a DP for the shoot. He's a pro and teaches classes at a few films schools in NYC. He's the guy who shot Message Universal with me. But this would be an excellent opportunity for you (or anyone else who's new with the camera) to learn first hand on set from him. Touch base with me via PM or email me through my site and we can start chatting about it if you (or anyone) else is interested.

Hey Guys
Did this thing come together?
I"m managing another musical group and there's a server dedicated to user's group meetings that's pretty efficient:

http://www.meetup.com

manages all the meetings, and the members, does the RSVPS, etc., all automatically.
All we need is a manager...
If a meeting happened in Feb then I missed it, I think.
I'd like to be in on the next one for sure!
Cheers
Chris

Hey guys, once you workout a date and all, maybe I can talk the omnipotent sales manager into allowing me to hold a meeting at EVS, as requested by Chuck. ;D How long do you guys think a meeting would go?

I'm in Studio City .. I'll take a Season Pass Please !!!... Rush, great idea... I would think the format could be similar to the LAFCPUG ( L.A. Final Cut Pro ) user group scenario.. One nite a month .. Meeting to last a few hours, or more if we have a Large Band of excited DVX'ers ... Sharing their output and tips ... Hell, Let's Build a BARN !!!!

Me, too! The beginning of this thread looked so promising ... but that was many months ago now.

It doesn't even have to be a super-fancy thing. I've only been to a few small user group meetings, but they were all really low-key. Even if we all got together and loudly congregated in a big, empty room, I'd be there.

I'll bring the orange drink ... who's going to bring the follow focus for the raffle?

Bill Porter
08-25-2005, 04:11 PM
If we got together and congregated in a big, empty room, it wouldn't empty any more! Sounding better already! :)

Seeing as nobody is taking the lead position, how does Saturday, Sept. 10th sound for people? If enough people are open, let's see where we all are located and find a nice middle ground location. But first, schedules. The 10th sound good?

I know im new to this forum and I'm actually relatively new to film making and the dvx100a and I'm like a few months late since this topic was started but I have a little idea that might help in actually getting this thing going. From reading all those posts it looks like people aren't sure of whats going on. If everyone here has yahoo emails you can make a yahoo group for this meeting and everytime someone posts something it actually sends an email to everyone. so by doing so everyone would actually know what is going on. but of course everyone has to have a yahoo email or sign up for one. I don't know if this helps but I'm just throwing it out there as an option. I def would like to do some networking among us LA people. hope this helps!

Hi Slinks, welcome to the board!

As you noticed, we're pretty much using this thread on this board for that purpose you suggested. The real problem is finding a venue where to meet. Then getting everyone's schedules to sync up.

Truth is, for a first time get together, depending on the amount of people who really show up, I say we find the largest starbucks with the most amount of chairs and just meet up there. I mean we're just going to sit around and chat the first time out anyway, right? It's not like we're going to hook up our cameras and shoot anything or do anything technical.

Thoughts?

Oh man, I hope that you guys will still be up for this and meeting in about 6-9months. I will be moving out to L.A. then. And I def. want to meet up get connections, share resources and maybe all together work on a feature. Ah, that would be suckin' sweeeeeeeeet. At least for the people who live in L.A. and cities around L.A.

Bill Porter
09-21-2005, 05:23 PM
Yes, looks like it is pretty easy to get a decent number of folks together. Now we need to pick a place.

Not enough people have their locations in their profiles, tho! I'm willing to drive an hour plus, into LA, but let's try to plan for it to be someplace centralized and someplace nice.

We could meet up in the San Fernando Valley someplace; that's a lot closer to midpoint than other places. Any thoughts, any complaints? Let's hear from everybody about their locations or at least put it in your profile!

Ventura, here. I know we got another in Thousand Oaks or Santa Barbara or somewhere up here in the 805.

Rasquachemedia

Is there someone going to take the lead on this? I'm in Santa Barbara so it would be hard for me to, but am willing to do a bit of research to find a place. I was thinking 15-20 people where parking is easy and have some coffee or something.

Last time I was in LA Starbucks seemed to get packed and it was very hard to find a table, especially for a party this size.

I think we should try to take advantage of the fact that Jarred will be in town. As of right now I can't commit to going because school year starts this week, but will definately try.

Should we consider meeting Thursday evening since Jarred may be gone Friday evening?

Okay I'm going to try to come up with some ideas of where, but if people in the LA area want think of a couple of places that would be great.

Oh another thing to consider is what time in the evening. I presume we should wait until traffic dies down a bit. So around what time would that be, 7'ish? I haven't live in LA for a while.
