Just checked out seriousmagics site and they have a 200 dollar rebate on the dvrack. Makes it even more attractive.

*sigh* without a Mac version I won't be able to use it. Unless, of course, I win their contest and get the laptop to run the software on.

;D

Wish me luck!

Hmm, $300 is almost worth it to have a vectorscope and waveform in the field.

Well I have shot a couple of days with it and found it quite indispensible.

Firstly instant playback on a decent sized screen makes a huge difference. You get to see your composition instantly. No need to rewind your shots.

Secondly the split screen is amazingly useful to match the exposure of your shots. This is particularly true of interiors when you have to re light constantly. The waveform monitor itself splits as well. Also shots on different days can be matched.

The focussing chart can be used for the anamorphic as well I think as it has vertical and horizontal lines to focus on.

Unfortunately the programme does tend to stall at times which neccessitates restarting it but fortunately it doesnt take very long to do so and nothing is ever lost.

The waveform and vectorscope are nice, and the monitor's decent (not very high-res though, only about 300 lines) but the nicest tool is the digital disk recorder. I didn't necessarily plan on using that aspect much, and now after doing a couple of shots with it, I find it the most indispensable part of the whole program!

DV Rack rules.

Actually, I think it would be kind of funny to see how many "frequently asked questions" could be answered with just "dv rack".

Q. I don't have a 16:9 monitor. How can I view my footage un-squeezed?
A. DV Rack.

Q. Can I hook my laptop up to my camera and use it as a monitor?
A. DV Rack.

Q. I don't have a professional monitor. How can I calibrate the LCD so I know what the footage will really look like?
A. DV Rack.

Q. Can I just hook up my laptop to my camera and capture on its hard drive?
A. DV Rack.

Q. How can I record an 8-hour lecture without stopping to change tapes?
A. DV Rack.

I don't know, there's probably a million questions that this little product answers. I don't know why they have a $200 rebate on it, I'd expect it to be flying off the shelves!

I'm guessing a lot of people are not giving it a chance. Product seems too good to be true so maybe it's getting dismissed. :-/

No rush - You can have till the end of December for the "DVrack Guide" :D

My only problem with it is the interface. I just don't like how they tried to make it look like an actual rack. That's nothing to stop me from buying it, it's just not attractive. I think I'll wait to see what come out in version 2. But hey, the new sticker price is tempting, so who knows.

For an even better deal, check out Serious's authorized dealers (link off their DV Rack page) for a potential discount plus rebate. I just received my copy from Guy Graphics ( www.guygraphics.com ) for $399 plus shipping minus rebate. I couldn't pass up the final price.

So you got it for $199 plus shipping?! :o

Man - That is WAY too tempting!

Yup! After mail-in rebate that is. ;D An email from Serious stated the rebate was good for purchases from their dealers.

dakotapod

they said your rebate then was valid?

Haven't sent in the rebate yet but Serious stated in the rebate email:

"Whether you buy it from one of our valued dealers or direct from our website, there's never been a better time to buy DV Rack."

Guy Graphics is listed on the Serious Software site as one of their dealers:

http://www.seriousmagic.com/ultradealers.cfm

Click on the Guy Graphics link and then click on the picture of DV Rack that states "$199 after rebate". That takes you to their DV Rack page which has a link to the rebate PDF file which was also included in my order. Looks pretty solid to me.

They even threw in a free DV Rack t-shirt. :)

There's also links on the Serious site to a number of other dealers you might want to check out. There may be one local to you.

I guess I should state that I have no association with any of them. This was my first purchase from Guy Graphics. They were very pleasant to talk to over the phone and I received my order very quickly.

As usual. :(

Y'know...I've been looking at DVRack and thinking "Damn. But I don't want to buy a laptop."

And then Elaine comes up to me and asks if I want to buy a Toshiba P4 laptop with a 17" screen and blah blah blah...for $400.

Now I guess I've no excuse.

Coming to a theater near you Johan...Hopefully :-/

I caught what you said and put myself in your shoes for a moment...I feel for you brother. Without thinking much about it, I see that in adds all the time (offer good in US and Canada). Since it never aplied to me I never gave it much thought. I don't understand why you don't get the breaks that way. I'll take it up as sort of a sub hobby and see what I can dig up :)

All is well Mino,

For all you non-US/Canada people out there, send an e-mail to the nice guys at Serious Magic and they will give even you a good deal on DV Rack.

My copy is on it's way! *;D

anyone knows if there is a way to use waveform full screen ? or resize windows to get them larger ?

I'm interested in DVRack mainly for the waveform :)

Thanks,
Ulisses

How good is the dvrack compared to what it replaces? I am one of them "too good to be true"'s I guess. for a $200 program to replace equipment that is over $1000!? That's nice!
I'm sure it'll be perfect for me, but just want to know.
Thanks.

I forgot about that email. Yes I did receive a "validation email" from SeriousMagic. I must have missed the part about when the rebates would be mailed.

I got the rebate!!! I almost tossed it. It looked like a small post card. I'm glad I looked. :P

That's MY fear...mine is showing up at my Parents' house... "Oh, more junk mail. <toss>"

What was the return address, so I can tell my Mom to look for it?

The rebate card is a 4x6 card. It is a check with a tear strip at the bottom. The upper left has Serious Magic written on it. The upper right has "presorted frst class mail, US postage paid, etc." where the stamp usually goes. It looks like so many other junk mails we get, we almost didn't spot it! :(

But hey....I'm glad we did! (and thanks Serious Magic for the rebate and the awesome product)
