View Full Version : GREATEST FLIM OF ALL TIME - WHY

PaleRider
04-09-2004, 03:23 PM
Lawrence of Arabia is the worlds greatest single flim. For those of you who don't know what a flim is, it is one step higher than a motion picture. A flim will connect with the viewer on an emotional level where as your ordinary film or motion picture will only provide entertainment for the demented viewer. A flim is not a device for special effects rather it transports us to a another place where we can better understand and re-evaluate our lives.

What, you didn't think your original post was enough to piss people off, so you upped the condescension?

I think I remember a very entertaining thread a few weeks ago : a guy had coined the term "vilm" for "video film" (the word sounded like a german man unsuccessfully trying to say "film" ; he wasn't austrian though if I remember well... ;))

Anyway, here's my point : shall we from now on call the work of a video flimmaker a "vlim" ?

I prefer "vlim" to "vilm". Sounds much better.

Maybe I should create a poll on this particular issue...

Oh no no no, it has to be the Godfather, the perfect film, acting, design, photography, depth etc..although lawrence of arabia was a very good film. It's also very interesting now, ironically the british wanted the wahhabis in power to overthrow the ottoman empire, now by creating and supporting that very group they helped support, that very wahhabi group is now lead by - yes - Ossama. Life is strange.

True, but to state your opinion as objective is...well... just silly

Personally I enjoyed Jurassic Park more than any other film on first viewing.

Some films that have "changed" me are Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Cinema Paradiso, Life of Brian and actually a student short called Visiting Hours had a real effect on me.

This is the point I was trying to make with my Encino Man comment.
What do you see when you look at Pollack's work? Some see chaos, others see beauty. When you watch American Beauty to see a floating bag or the whimsical nature of all things and the interconnected force that unites everything?

It is not possible to state that one film is the greatest of all time. Many people might agree that a film is great, but the nature of art is subjective.

Look at History of the World by Mel Brooks. Right after the first artist paints on a cave wall, the first critic comes along and pisses on it.

Art is subjective. We all see what we want to see.

You pick any movie and someone can find a flaw. Nothing is perfect, no film is the best.

that's the film that i can actually say that it molded my personality,as a rebelious son of a b that i am. i'm always trying to get people to speak up and fight for their rights and sometimes they totally agree, but when the masters want to know who is instagating it .well i'm left standing alone, it's not that they push me out in front of them, they all take one giant step back......awww you gotta love it.......natural born loser THE NEW SPARTCUS......

Greates Film of All Time: The Karate Kid

Come on, like there is any doubt about it. Daniel-san kicks ass, Mr. Miyagi kicks ass, Johnny kicks ass, Sensei Kreese kicks ass, and - of course - The COBRA KAI KICK ASS!!!!!

You think Spartacus was a rebel? Give me a break.
http://robbloom.com/popculture/images/johnny.jpg
Johnny Lawrence, that's a rebel.

This movie had it all. The drama, the action, the romance, and the ultimate villian - Sensei Kreese. Everyone should own a copy of this important film (for a definition of film, see PaleRider's entry at the beginning of this thread).

The way of the fist: STRIKE FIRST, STRIKE HARD, NO MERCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COBRA KAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clueless or Romy and Michele's High School Reunion

Now that's FILM! Or is it a motion picture? On DVD it's just a file. Or rather, a bitstream.

Laurence is definitely one of the best flickers I've ever seen.
One of the great moving pictures shows of movie history.
Rarely has a photoplay moved me like that show did.

Truly a great work.
I'm just not sure it's really what I would call a "film"

Now Clash of the Titans on the other hand...

I'm guessing this is your PERSONAL opinion.

the greatest film is such a sensitive and delicate issue just because people are affected in diferent ways. some are changed, ruled, obsessed, by a movie and what this represents; places, moments in their lives, people, etc.
I don't have a favorite one

It's diffucult to pick a BEST MOVIE. You can ask which had the best cinamatography. or best script, or best acting. Or you can ask which affected you the most. For me it was Star Wars, but I was at the premier in the Chinese theater. It was electric. Everybody stood up and clapped and cheered at the end. Now Star wars seems kind of corny.
Jaws scared me the most. Surfing was never quite as relaxed after that movie.

I have avoided this thread, because "Best Movie of All Time" is so subjective. But WTF.

I gotta go with Gone With The Wind.

It is the total package. In real dollars, it is the highest grossing film of all time. It has been seen by more people than any other film in history. The making of the movie is legendary. What started as David O. Selznick's folly, turned into a great success. The Technicolor cinematography is outstanding (epecially on the big screen). The story is mythological and the characters are Icons. Vivian Leigh is a babe and Gable is... well, Gable. It don't get no better then this.

My biggest complaint is that Ashely Wilkes is a pu**y!

Yeah, this is so subjective, and hard to separate personal favorites from what is really a "Gold Standard." (Personally, I think Reds is one of the all-time great epic films, but I'm a journalist, am drawn to that period of history, and really dig Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton -- impossible to separate those personal feelings from my judgement of the film as a whole).

But, I agree, GWTW totally holds up viewing after viewing; it's technical achievement for it's time was stunning AND it remains to this day beautiful to look at (whereas, CGI tends to look so dated so quickly these days, the old-school matte techniques used in GWTW really persevere).

Oh sh*t, a challenge.

Naw, I've learned enough around here to know not to got to the mat for a film. Movies are so subjective, that there is no way convince a person who does not like a movie to like it.

I am sad for people that do not see the greatness of GWTW. I'm even sadder, that these people are attempting to make films themselves.

Not to bash your opinion on what you think is the best film but how could any of you forget "The Shawshank Redemption." That film is IMO the best film ive ever seen. It has its problems but its a strong picture with alot of heart that seemed to move me more than any other film at the end. Another film that did that was Forrest Gump, another classic.

Look-it...
It was spot-on when it was suggested that the "perfect film" is a very subjective call to make. So everyone can sleep soundly knowing their number one is...well, just that; their number one. So you can all say that absolutely any film is the greatest film of all time...as long as that film is Casablanca.
