Always interlaced no matter what. There is no progressive in the Sony HDV cameras.
There is in the Sony HDW-F900, based on HDCAM even 24p .

That's not HDV. That's HD.

It's not TV either. It's HBO.

and you get that horrible dv motion look?
better to stick with the dvx100 then.

also, what about that sample2.wmv
it says 720p.
It was converted in post to "progressive" footage. It will never look as good as the real thing.
It's HBO.

anyway...Interlaced is something from the sixtees. Its harder to compress, it takes more bandwith, and its more difficult for slow motion.

Is that why both Sony and Panasonic HD cameras do their overcranking in interlace as opposed to progressive?

Not sure what you mean there. The CineAlta doesn't do any overcranking, and the Panasonic VariCam shoots only progressive, all the way to 60P.

To do slo-mo in Cinealta you shoot at 30i 0r 60i and then playback on a deck, or when digitized in at 24fps, you, in effect, get over cranking.
Sony doesnt do it in camera, but it was made to do it with the Cinealta system. Panny does do it in camera...thought panny did in camera at 60i, my bad. as i said im more familiar with Sony.

That's how I do it in the DVX as well, but I didn't know Sony was promoting that as a feature. But seeing as it shoots at 24/25/30/50i/60i, that's pretty much the only way you could do it...
As for the VariCam, it only shoots progressive, at any frame rate from 4 to 33 fps, plus 40 and 60.

Well, tried to log in on another computer and it saysmy username doesnt exist...whatever...
So, yeah I've used that technique with the DVX as well ;)
I don't know if Sony markets that technique or not, they do know about it.
And the infamous Jeff Cree teaches it. Everything I know about the F900 I learned from the that man. :D

..to get back in line with this issue here.
i wouldnt say that interlaced material is " more difficult" to get slow motion from, id say its pretty much the same, but obviously , if given the choice, progressive would be the way to go. varicam as barry mentioned will shoot 60p which is much preffered to 60i anyday. if the sony could do 60p it would be used over 60i .. unfortunately it can only do 60i so it is the only available option.
