Can someone help me out. I have a friend that I go to school with that says the FX cam is not "real" HD. He says that their is only one HD resolution 1080 and that it's the standard so cameras like this one are not "real" HD. Only cams like the cinealta are HD to him. Is he right? That sounds stupid to me.

Who are all these "friends" who keep talking long after their foot gets firmly planted in their mouths?
First of all, this cam DOES do 1080.
Second, there are a number of different resolutions in the HD spec:
1080i
1080p
720p
480p
I probably left one off . . . seems like I did.
HDV is a highly-compressed form of HD, but it is HD.

There are two resolutions that are supported as "high definition" in the ATSC specification. They are 1920 x 1080, and 1280 x 720. Both are considered "high def".
The FX1 records at 1440x1080. Your friend says that only the CineAlta is "high def"? Ask him what resolution it records at. He won't know, of course, because he wouldn't be making this argument with you if he did.
(btw, HDCAM, as used on the CineAlta, records at 1440 x 1080).

Buy the ASC video handbook.
A lot of this information is in there along with a nice history of video in general.

John Q:
Are you referring to the one by Jerry Whitaker?

Not the ATSC, he's talking about the ASC, which is the American Society of Cinematographers. They publish the ACM, which is the American Cinematographer's Manual (considered the "bible" among cinematographers) and the AVM as well.
