Hi
I just watched the film Zatoichi and was very impressed by the use of cgi blood. Does anyone know how they go about creating this.
What software do they use. How do they create the blood.
Thanks to anynone who can help.

Um, its easier to use stage blood. Looks more authentic than CG. Plus its done in realtime. Stage blood or concentrated fruit puch is cheap.

all you have to do is get a red gel pen, open up the digital tape, and draw it in. duh, how could you NOT know that.
serously though, the only thing in my experience would be something like maya or 3ds max. I'm sure there's an easier way.

For CG blood you want to use an advanced particle system ideally with blobbing. You're looking at the more advanced packages and usually with some custom tuning or programming.

software called houdini would do realistic blood. ther eare others too...maya,xsi,3dmax. but houdini is still the particle king.

Most CGI blood I've seen looks pretty fake not enless its done right. Most blood effects are done practically. :)

i agre with bluespider, using CGI requires expensive software, damn good system to be able to render it (unless you sit there for 50hrs rendering it), and good experience with using these programs (its a sharp learning curve and takes a lot of time). If you're a novice, It'll probably look fake.
Doing blood effects practically is the best way to go.
uh oh! i didnt answer your question! oh well, I've never seen a CGI blood tutorial out there, sorry.

perhaps 3ds max's particle flow could help you out. Not sure if you have access to it or not but it's a great particle system. You can try www.cgtalk.com under the 3ds max forum for some more help. I've done some pretty sweet smoke tests using PFlow which could probably be used as blood if the materials were change along with the amount of particles. Be sure to try cgtalk.com though. theres tons of cg heads there.

yeah, and just being up to speed on the software isnt good enough. you need skill and a good eye.
oh, and how would you know you have seen good cg blood, if its good, you shouldnt notice it. there are alot of vfx in films now that you WILL NOT notice...its when its done poorly that you notice them...or if its so far out an idea, that it can only been done with cg, then you know its cg, cause theres no other way it could have been done.

Honestly i saw Zatoichi it was not that imporessive. Kind of like the japnese use sgi for blood cause of slow zatoichi really is in real life so he looks faster. Jet Li does not need cgi blood he is too fast. Any way to answer your question i would use 3ds max or Maya like the person noted above.
