I need to figure out how to make a cut or burn wound (like a brand) on an actors forehead and also how to make eyes completely black (the actual eyeballs)? Any ideas?

I think your local costume/makeup place can help you with this. I just bought a "bruise" kit for $5.00, I remember seeing "cuts" for sale, as well.

You should have a makeup artist to help you with the cuts n wounds. Also you can search online for DIY sfx makeup. As for the black pupils deal. You can use color contacts. They can be expensive but looks really cool. Or you can do it in post production using photoshop and after effects. Doing it in post requires a little bit of skill and patience.

Thanks guys. I was figuring that I could do the eyes in post, but how much is a "little" skill :)

Wow, I just looked at some of those contacts on some websites. They're cool but way too expensive.

This is an example of coloring the eye in post. This was done in photoshop.

You don't need a whole lot of skills, just a good eye and some practice. Oh and also patience.

Man that looks awesome. Care to explain a little? Or am I better off just messing with the program on my own?

Bluespider, that's messed up! Reminds me of the newly-popular Japanese ghost movies.
I watched the SciFi version of Dune and Children of Dune. When the main character gets his eyes burned out, they just used black scleral contact lenses. You still see the hotspot, because they are reflective, but you can remove that easily in post. I think I've seen these lenses for under $200.
Are you looking for solid black eyeballs, like no sclera or iris? Or are you looking for the missing eyeball look? You could put in a keyable lens...blue, green, red...and insert 3D or photoshopped eyesockets. As long as there isn't too much rotation of the head, it should be easy to track.

Well, what usually do is export my clips to photoshop as filmstips or tga, etc. The most important thing to remember is color consistanty. It will take some practice to get it right but I would start by using the eye dropper in photoshop and selecting the color of the dark areas of the eye. Then I would simply create a new layer and start painting each eye. Once you have created the eye template. Just duplicated them and paste them over the old eyes. This techque only works on front views like mine. Just play with it. Its going to take practice and lots of patience. good luck

Heres another example, not the best example but gives you an idea.

and it was done for free! Color contacts would be nice but $200 bucks is way too much.

Brandt_Wilson: I'm looking for the sclera contact look without spending the cash, but that keyable color contact with the eyesocket could be cool for the future
Bluespider: Thanks for all the help man, I'm gonna give your way a shot

Bluespider and jhvid:
Take a peek at this link:
http://www.coastalcontacts.com/show1fproduct.cfm?formkey=041206102416&ProductCode =SFX100&ProdID=1301&Dispgroup=3&CatID=12
$140 plus shipping. *I know the difference between this and $200 is negligible, but it might save you a log of time doing manual in PS or AE.
EDIT: Sorry, that was the per lens price. I'll look for better deals.
Also jhvid, regarding the branding wound, how fresh is it supposed to be? Flexible collodion, when it's painted in the pattern you're after, will contract and make the skin around it pucker. Tutorial here:
http://www.fxwarehouseinc.com/collodion.shtml
If you need to reproduce EXACTLY the shape of the burn, get some dental wax and warm it, press it over the area to be made up and let it harden again. Then cut out the burn shape. The wax becomes your template. You'll need to be somewhat gentle with it, though.
After painting on the collodion, paint tinted gelatine over the puckered area. It is shiny, which is nice for a fresh burn. Basic tutorial here:
http://www.fxwarehouseinc.com/gelflesh.shtml
Collodion for the pucker, gelatin for the color and shine.

Slimothy- Here are the trailers to the movie if you're intrested. This was done 2 years ago when I didn't know anything about the DVX. Some of the shots look over/under exposed. I know better now. Peace!!

BW: Great site. I'm still debating between cut or burn so I'll keep that stuff in mind. I'm new to this kind of thing so it's gonna require some playing on my part.
BLUESPIDER: I like the trailer, especially the titles, but I'm wondering where you got the budget to shoot in Cambodia :)

haha, its funny that you ask becuase that was actually shot at a park. If we were to zoom out or pan the camera you would probably see a family having a barbque.

I was kidding. I figured it was shot close to home, but it does look pretty damn good for a park :)
