Okay, so I understand that I probably come across the boards as somewhat of a prick, for lack of a better term, I can live with that...
granted a people person I'm not but I do love animals so...
I was on my way to pick up some cigarettes from a bud and was going to have a few beer when I stumbled across a baby squirrel walking across the sidewalk into traffic.
His eyes were'nt open, about 3 inches long and just stumbling along.
So, ofcrouse I halted. I placed him back into the brush off the sidewalk and waited/watched for about 15 minutes for any signs of advancement, parental interaction, ect.
Short version is I went over to a nearby farm stand vendor and stole a box, with thier permission of course, as I was walking way, but, hehe, I was taking it whether they liked it or not, went back and put my little buddy into the box.
He was a cute squirrel. Just a baby with his eyes closed and clumsey as hell.
He liked to crawl up my arm and go to sleep in my hand.
So, with hand in box with Mr. Squirrel holding on, I made it to buds house where we called the Humane Society and they came and picked it up.
It seems she was just on a call for another squirrel a few minutes ago and had the other one in the back of her van. So I guess he'll have company for a couple weeks.
I'm glad I stopped and helped it. It kind of felt like God was testing me to see what I would do with this little guy. I could have kept on walking and done nothing. But how could I leave it there for what was assuredly his death in a few hours?
Am I a saint? Nope. Am I posting to make myself look good? I hope not.
Like I say, people I can take or leave, but animals I love.
I miss this little guy already but the humane society was the best thing for him and all turned out well.
As for me and God, I hope that squares us up for the squirrel I shot and killed when I was 16. And don't think that hasn't bothered me all of these years.
Oh btw, I got my smokes for free and a whooool lot of free beer which obviously I'm still working on consuming, as per usual.
So, have you done a good deed recently and if so what was it and why?
Gord.T
08-31-2010, 05:55 PM
I didn't really expect any replies since I doubt any of you have done any good deeds lately, not that I'm an expert at it. ( :))
But if I had a camera to take a picture of that squirrel sleeping in my hand, I think that might have helped. But such was not the case today.
Anyways, forget it.

It always makes me feel good to hear about people going out of their way to do something kind-hearted. I have an internal "faith in humanity" scale... and I gotta' tell ya'... I can never hear enough for the sake of good.
Thank you for doing the right thing when you had the chance. It doesn't matter to me if you tell people about it... it's still doing the right thing.

I am glad to hear that, great actions from you. I remember something like that happend to me once but insted of a squirrel, it was a beautiful 5 or 6 year old little girl
I was driving in a third world country and came to a red light during heavy traffic, so there I was waiting for the light to turn green and I see an old lady cross the street right in front of me and I look to my right and see this little girl that did not cross, light turns green, I put my vehicle in park get out of the car, run, put the little girl on my shoulder and take her to the other side of the street with the old lady which I guess was her grandma, get back to my car and go with about 50 cars pissed off behind me
it was such a beautiful feeling afterwards

Don't worry, your reputation's safe with me.
While I agree that good deeds should be done w/o anybody knowing... of course you shouldn't require recognition for doing something nice... the deed is still done... and MOST people will find any reason to do nothing, when doing something good takes effort (or expense).
That's why I wouldn't bust somebody's balls for telling you they did a good deed.

The last random good deed I did was at a screening for a film in Beverly Hills. It was the worst film I've ever had the misfortune of sitting in a theater to watch. Afterwards, there was a reception in the lobby with stars and starlets milling around a big buffet. I went outside to escape the madness, and to avoid being asked what I thought of the film, when I saw a homeless man down the street begging for change. I went and raided the buffet, loaded up a plate as high as I could and went and gave it to the guy. He was very appreciative and I felt better about being around such an obscene waste of money.

I used to volunteer at the Humane Society so I'm not unfamiliar to helping animals.
It's just not everyday I get a baby squirrel dropped in my lap so I thought I'd mention it. In fact I've never seen a baby squirrel until yesterday so I thought it was kind of cool. It's like a little dragon with big, very big, huge, clawy feet.
I wish I had a picture of it.

I found another one today. The same spot as before. I went over and got another box from the farm stand lady again. She couldn't believe it. She's was really friendly.
So we did the same routine. I guess it was a seperate wildlife foundation that picked them up and not the Humane Society. The Humane Society, who we originally called, had called this other organization. So the lady came over and picked up the other squirrel. She mentioned she had a couple of baby rabbits also and said they were getting swamped recently.
I thought that maybe something must have happened to the mother in order that the babies were climbing out of the nest and falling to the ground.
My suspicions were correct. On the way back, I brought a basket with me, just in case, and about 3 feet on to the road directly across from where I found these two, was a dark patch.
It didn't look like anything but on closer inspection it was an adult squirrel flattened and facing in the direction directly across from the nest. So I believe that was the mother and that's why the babies climbed out and fell on the ground.
If there is any more in the nest they are probably done for by tomorrow.
It's on private property. The only other thing I could do would be to knock on his door and ask for a ladder. I don't suspect that will go over very well.
What do you think? You think I should go ask him if we could climb up and see if we can save any more, in case there is more up there?

To be honest, there are so many squirrels here where I live that I don't really care anymore.
At my previous university, the squirrels were SO abundant that they were actually considered the pseudo-mascot for the school (real mascot was the Mean Green). Several years ago, there was an albino squirrel living on campus that made headlines (not kidding). It was found dead in the campus square, so students organized a funeral for it where hundreds showed up to pay their respects.
'S'ok, I'ma stick to dogs and horses. Squirrels can go to hell.

I guess I could share a good deed I did related to animals...
A few years ago, I was in my backyard tending to things. I saw a baby bird in the grass under the big token tree. Looking up, I could see the nest had been torn up by a heavy rain that morning. Mommy was nowhere to be seen.
I don't know how long that baby bird had been there, and I suspected the mother would never find it or be able to tend to it. I didn't want my dog to eat it, and I didn't want it to slowly die from starvation or exposure.
So I grabbed a hoe from the garage and rammed it as hard as I could onto the baby bird's head, which seemed to kill it instantly, or at least as quickly as humanely possible with the available tools.
It was sad, just a cute little bird that had no chance.
It makes me sad to think of it now...I just put my aforementioned dog of 15 years to sleep two weeks ago. Watching animals die has to be one of the hardest things to do. The only consolation is knowing it's right.

Some people think that if one shares a good deed they have done, then the good deed was done for their ego. By giving a homeless guy $5, you're actually just paying $5 for people to think you're a good person.
I disagree with that belief though. If it's best to be a good person secretly, how are "less-good" people going to have an example to follow?
It's a really difficult subject actually. Prior to the American Civil War, if you were a plantation owner who chose to not use slave labor, would you be self-righteous to speak up about it?

There have been long tortuous philosophical discussions on the subject but from my perspective the benefit is that charity anonymously worked - from the beneficiary's perspective - could have come from anyone. Meaning that to the degree that there is gratitude, it's generalized to the community rather than focused upon one individual which is a net social benefit.
But since there is also a communal benefit to people financing public buildings, services, or charities I don't object to public donors putting their names on the useful things they finance if it makes them happy. And it's likewise more beneficial for people to perform good works than not, so if people enjoy talking about whatever they do, that's fine so long as they are doing something.

Working on a show in Charleston a couple years ago, we were housed on John's Island. It was a pretty regular occurrence to find turtles in the road - especially first thing in the morning. Anyway, left the condo and drove out toward James Island and saw a HUGE snapping turtle right in the middle of traffic. I blocked the road with my car and proceeded to try and find a safe way to pick him up. And he wanted no part of it. I actually found myself talking to him as I moved him, "...don't bite me... trying to help! Help me, baby Jesus."
Anyway I got him safely out of harms way, deep in the palmettos and underbrush near the water and where he'd have to really work to get back into trouble.
Later that morning, I realized I'd put him right back from where he must have been crossing from. D'oh! I've always laughed thinking about how happy he must have been about the help I gave him.

Reminds me of a story, I was walking home from the bar one night, and ran into a girl crying.
well, she was around 24, same as me, but she had a baby rabbit that she had picked out of the mouth of a cat downtown. We were downtown. She was really upset. I talked her into letting me have it because my brothers girlfriend at the time was a manager of a pet shop and his place was on my way home.
So I took litttle buddy to my bros place and bro's girlfriend screamed my head off. "What the *F* am I going to do with that? kind of thing.
So I said, fine, I'll put the poo pooing thing in your back yard and I don't give a poo poo what happens to it.
well, then she perked up and started saying " Well, we'll have to feed it and maybe we can take it to her friends place out in the country and she could raise it (she was also a wildlife type manager person) and so, she took it.
Ya know, it's like , sorrrreeeee. But once I said I'll toss it in the bush and don't give a poo poo what happens to it, well, all of a sudden, they found a way to help it out.

A couple months back, as we were driving home from work we saw this tiny dog walking along the side of a busy intersection. My wife (who before she had a dog, was NOT a dog person) saw him and asked if we could pick him up. I was a little hesitant at first, but then he started darting into traffic! I pulled to the side, jumped out of the car, and just as I did I saw the dog get hit! We walked over and saw one of his back legs were broken and his eye was cut, but he was alive. However, as you know, an injured animal is very dangerous, especially a stray dog. So a few others stopped and we corralled the dog under a truck on the side of the road. I was the only person with a smart phone so I called the Humane Society, and they said they would be there within an hour... An hour and a half passed as we gave the dog some water we bought from the corner gas station, and tried to keep him motionless and calm. Eventually some folks came by who's daughter worked for the animal shelter, so we got some rope out of the back of someone's truck and made a makeshift leash and got him in their car. It was sure an interesting experience seeing about eight of us come together to take care of this injured dog. Here's a picture I snapped below.

Their genes didn't diverge much AT ALL from rats, as they are a rodent.
They've diverged enough to form a separate species, which is precisely what 'divergent evolution' describes. Rodentia is an order; two level of differentiation further along is where you get rats (superfamily Muroidea, genus Rattus) as distinct from squirrels (family Sciuridae, with five or six sub-families after that).
From order to individual species is usually at least three taxanomic removes. They're sufficiently different genetically that they can't be interbred. There's more of a gap than I think you recognize.
