I'm now working on previz for a script i've written and was wondering if anyone here does the same? I'll upload some shots once they are complete. Oops, not sure if this is the right spot for this topic. I threw it in here since I'm using 3ds max and I relate that to VFX :/ sorry.

it all depends on how complex the shot is. I only had to previz a few times simply because the shot was really complex with cranes doing some crazy angles. I also use max for previz, but rarely. I keep my shots simple now.

Im doing a full previs on a special effects heavy short film I'm working on. I am doing it in Lightwave. I think with a full previs it will be an easier shoot, as a lot of it requires CG elements. It will also make editing a lot easier, as I'll know what I'm going for. Nice thing about previs in 3d is you can play with the camera endlessly to try out every shot of a given scene, without wasting set time.
That doesnt mean there is no room for improvisation on set, but the better the plan, the more likely you'll get the shots you need.

I'm currently learning Blender so that I can use it as a [free] pre-viz tool.

That's killer!
Are they using proprietary software or something off the self?
