Burner question

Man, I am just being dragged, kicking and screaming into the 21st century. You would think that putting my finished projects on to a good old respectable vhs tape would be enough for my wife. But noooo, she wants me to get a DVD burner. Jeez, ya just can't keep some women happy.

Anyway, I need some input for hardware and authoring software. I edit on Adobe Premiere 6.5. I have a PC with a measly 1.4 gig processor, 768 megs of ram, and 120 gigs on two separate hard drives. I usually shoot in 24P if that makes a difference. I guess I'm looking for something that can burn dual-layered discs, since that's the wave of the present. But I'm open to all comers, so BRING IT ON!

I have Sony DVD -/+ RW burner which has worked great. It's one of the first models they released. I'm using Adobe Encore for creating the DVDs. Again, work well but the UI is a little clunky.

The DVD burners are inexpensive these days a very easy to install I would highly recommend getting one. Not only for burning videos but also for archiving and backups. I use DVD-RW for backups and it save me a bunch of time. I used to use CD-RW.

Oh, as to your hardware, your system should be fine. Getting a big fast dedicated hard drive for your A/V drives is another inexpensive a highly worthwhile option.

DVD-lab (www.mediachance.com) is a great DVD authoring tool, but you need a seperate MPEG-2 encoder (I use Sorenson Squeeze, but would recommend CCE Basic--only $50).

Buying DVD-lab and encoding software is still cheaper than buying Encore.

i really reccomend encore 1.5 its very very cool as far as functionality and features, and pretty intuitively easy to use. *as far as what dual layer burner to buy.. well ive got one. they recently upgraded it to 2x as fast 16x dvd burner and burns in ANY DVD or CD format + or - single or dual, and ive honestly *never heard of anyone making a coaster with it. if you have XP you can just buy the OEM version.. which is a non retail boxed version where they just send you the drive itself with no instructions or anything. but you can just set *the jumper to master or slave , and throw it on the controller cable of your choice in your machine, and XP will recognize it, and run it with out any further requirments... so you just have to stick it in the PC , and it will work with XP. * * Encore is not currently able to burn DUal layer discs, but you CAN make a dual layer size disc image with it, and then use NERO 6 ultra edition to burn the disc image *to a dual layer DVD. * likely you wouldnt be going dual layer all the time since the discs are about 15.00 + per disc and you could buy 15 reg DVDs for that price anyway. *so unless you REALLY need to have it all on one disc. just use reg DVDs it burns faster, and they are waaaay cheaper.. anyway heres a link to the burner i HIGHLY HIGHLY RECCOMEND.

heres the OEM non retail version.. only 70.00 !! thats 10.00 cheap erthan the my version which is only an 8x. IMHO its the best DVD burner out there right now..espescially for the price tag!!!*..good luck actually finding 16x DVDs right now anyway i guess though...but when they are easily available youll already have a burner for them. anyway you dont have to take my word for it,, read the reviews on the page..heres the link:

and yes, newegg is a reputable and reliable store.. you even get FREE fedex saver shipping on most purchases. *i dont really think the retail boxed version is worth it unless it comes with NERO cause i dont like the other consumer burning software, but thats just me.

..it might still recognize it. its a standard IDE drive device. but you may just need to download a driver is all.

I just checked the price on encore. I'm sure it kicks ass, but is there anything alittle more...low rent? Maybe in the 1-2 hundred dollar range?
