I've been doing the behind the scenes footage of an independent film being shot in my home town. Now it's all over and they need all the footage I've shot. How do I make copies of these MiniDV tapes.
I want to keep copies for myself, and I have no editing software besides basic Windows Movie maker. Thanks in advance.

If you're wanting MiniDV copies, just hook up a firewire cable from one deck to another. It's as simple as hitting play on your DVX and record on another MiniDV camera.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention all I have is my DVX, no other decks.
Another suggestion?

you could rent another camera? a cheap one wouldn't be very expensive for the day, and it' doesn't matter the make, it'll keep the quality. that' sounds like your best bet since your unfamiliar with your systems editor and on a time restraint....

If using another cam isn't an option, maybe try scenalyzer.

The demo might do the trick for you otherwise there is a freeware version on their website which should work as well:

Or take them to your local duplication house and have them run off copies. I do this because it frees me up to do actual work and saves wear and tear on your own gear.

Kai's got a good point there. It really does save you a lot of effort and time and wear on your equipment. It only costs a few bucks more per reproduction too... not that bad... usually the cost of the tapes is included in the deal.

umm? why dont you just capture your footage to the computer and dump it back to a fresh tape...no quality loss...digital=digital...

That's what I was thinking too.

how much is this in your experience? I got a quote yesterday that was for $90 (US) miniDV to miniDV. 1 copy.

..please tell me you laughed absurdley at them, and then hung up while still laughing.

i'll stck up on the above suggestion.. just capture it, and then export it back to a new tape without change.

I know. It would be cheaper to capture and leave it on a brand new drive. I guess they do a lot of corporate stuff and its no problem to charge Google $90/tape. I'm in the wrong line of work -ha!

.. if thats the case then im laughing at Google too!..lol :P

..also if you dont have enough extra drive space to play with making copies right now, you could always borrow someone elses mini dv camera ( thats been using the same lubrication type for tapes!) and make a copy from one camera to the other via firewire.. saves the double time of capture and export as well.

Ah, but what they didn't mention is that the transfer is done while you wait...by a 19 year old blonde ex-cheerleader with huge
brown eyes and not a stitch of clothing on.

Hi,
I have 2 Panasonic AG-DVX100. I have 5 hours of footage, shot on 24p that I need to transfer. I hooked up both cameras, works great... except for one small problem ! I need to transfer the time code also, not create a new one on the recorder, and I have not succeded yet... Anyone can tell me which sttings I have to use ? Would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

There's a setting in the VCR recording setup menu for something like 1394 TC REGEN. It will do exactly what you want, so look in the manual for that setting -- I'm not sure that's the exact setting, but I know that the camera can do what you're asking.
