Everytime I see a comercial dvd i wonder which software they use to encode the files. Normally the quality is miles away from the dvd´s i ve made so far.
Of course i know a lot depends on the source but i even see comercial dvd´s that comes from a video source that really look nice.
Does anybody knows which programs does the industry use?
I use tmpeg and procoder. The quality is ok comparing with other aplicattions. At least Is the best i have used, but still looking for something better.
I hate when i have to encode the video. Like knowing anticipated that the result won´t look like you want it to look.
Anyone knows about cinemacraft encoder (normal or pro version)? Any feedback
Thanks

The industry uses hardware based encoders. They cost a lot of money.
Software wise you can get outstanding quality out of TMPGEnc as long as you use the correct encoder settings. Encoding MPEG-2 isn't just a one button click deal. There are a lot of variables and it's good to know what each of those variables affect in order to help you make a good choice when encoding. I would suggest creating a 2 minute video clip and then spending a lot of time with your encoder trying different settings until you find something you like. The same goes for Procoder.
www.doom9.org has an encoding guide for TMPGEnc that is definitely worth a read. It will help you in just about every respect.
Finally, I've used Cinemacraft Encoder Basic before and have been quite impressed with it. It's better than TMPG in my opinion, if for no other reason than it's faster.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Chris.
I will take a look at the tmpeg guide.
I ve made several test with little pieces of video. But i never get satisfied. Nor even see a big difference and when i see it it is because get much worse.
Anyway those test were made without a knowledge on what i was changin and what the parameters works for... So i ll study the guide.
I hope i will report some tips and tricks
Thanks again.

Hey dont forget, lots of Hollywoods DVDs have HORRIBLE edge enhancement which makes it look sharp to the average viewer. Of course to us it just makes the picture look like butt.

Here's a free dv->MPEG2 encoder - it works though it's in beta.
