View Full Version : DVD Programs
Whee! First post in the new forum!
Anywho, what are you all using to author your DVDs? I'm using Adobe Encore, it streamlines REALLY well with the Adobe suite (especially Photoshop and After Effects). I'm happy with it.

Yeah, I like it a lot as well... that's what i use to author...
I find that encore has some serious burning and encoding issues. I only use it to make the dvd itself, not to encode or burn.
Just as a question, what do you use to burn and encode?

I use Premiere Pro or Vegas for my editing, TmpGenc for my encoding, Adobe Encore for my authoring, and Prassi Primo for my burning.

Encore is good for making a DVD. It goes hand in hand with photoshop CS. I would not encode in this progam. It will not encode 24p DVDs. I tend to hear negative things about encore. Personally I think it is kick ass software.

I recently bought Mainconcept mpeg encoder...i know thats the default in premiere and for encore and the defaults have always worked ok...the pro version of the codec is much nicer...and a little speedier....
encore is great, much better then dvdit and reel dvd.....it has its quirks
but i think in the next build it will much better...
encore may not do 24p encoding...but it will allow u to use a 24p mpeg and not have to transcode it...at least mainconcept gives me that option

I normally use DVD Architect (have never had any problems with it), however I recently received the Ulead DVD Workshop 2.0 and may give that a try as well.

Liquid edition has a good authoring program inside it. Though when I need to do something simple, I use Pinnacle Studio 9. Some may laugh, but for the price, Studio 9 is a very powerful program and I haven't had any problems with. Just save whatever you have as avi or mpg2 and open it up, drag it to the timeline, choose your menu, and create your disc.
On discs, I use PRODISC 4x Silver Inkjet Printable DVD-R I ordered from www.americal.com the discs $54.00 for 100, they have a free shipping special for ground shipping. I use an Epson Stylus Photo R200, that comes with an adapter you lay the disc on, it prints it. They look very professional. Staples sells them for $99.00.
Just finished a High School Graduation for a local Christian School, I burned about 40 discs and printed them, packged them no problem. I did get 2 coasters, bad burns from copying them in Roxio, but that was it.

My work flow is FCE, Compressor, DVDSP 2 for the build, and on to Toast for the burn. No problems yet.

I used encore, but sometimes the final images are burned upside down. The whole DvD is upside down, weird. I just now export straight to DVD in Premiere. Anyone knows why its doing this? Can it be my burner?

I've heard about this before, not just with Encore, but have no idea what causes it.
This might be one reason:

I seem to be the only person here with a few Encore gripes, heh. First off, I dont like having to read through tutorials every time I want to make a button carry over from a PSD file in my menus. It's just too complicated if you want to do more complicated buttons / motion menus. And I think the other problem was how you cannot lock the remote in any videos - for a bumper or intro for instance. Its also a bit rough when working with mpegs from standalone encoders.
DVD Maestro is a great program - I believe now its called Sonic DVD Producer. Does anybody use Scenarist?
I've been using the standalone CinemaCraft Encoder - Which I believe beats out TMPGEnc and MainConcept; both in speed and quality. With the pro version, after doing a single pass, you can look at a diagram of the entire video on a timeline, look at quality levels, and adjust the bitrate in that part to help the PQ! It will also tell you the exact size of the video before you do your final encoding pass. Do you think thats worth the $1000+ price tag? It sure does push the limits of DVD. By far the best software encoder out there!

I have been using Encore to author, encode and burn DVD's. The discs look and play great on my DVD player but I've been hearing many bad comments about the Encore encoder producing output incompatible with some DVD players. I think I'll start using TMPGEnc to encode. Does importing MPEG2 files instead of AVI into Encore slow it down much?
I have good results with ulead DVD workshop for 24p stuff using uncompressed avi source file. Looks the same as what I see on ntsc monitor from NLE...Freakin brilliant. Mind you those are mostly half hour clips ergo no bitrate trade off woes.

I use Pinnacle Liquid Edition, it has the DVD Authoring in the program right from the timeline and with the lastest update to 5.5 now 5.62, I have been getting perfect burns everytime. I don't use Roxio Disc Copier anymore to burn multiple copies, I burn them all in LE. I have complete control over every step and can use many different methods. But I Mostly make a DVD Image and burn from that. Quality is great. :D

I use DVD Workshop 2 - DVD Architect before that. No probs on either, but Workshop 2 is 100 times better than the previous version - no bugs, simple to use, but sophisticated enough to use multiple audio streams, etc. DVDs always look professional. Never been happier with a DVD app! :)
