Anyone know why a FCP export, burned to DVD would stutter when played back on a TV?
I have never had this problem before, but a movie I just finished looks fine in FCP, but stutters like crazy on the burned DVD.
I've tried exporting both as QT and via compressor. But stutter is bad in both.
I also tried different brands of media, but no help.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
(Note this in not pan strobbing... it's something related to the processes of exporting from FCP to a DVD.)
Thanks -

I'm not a FCP guy, but you will get serious "stuttering" regardless of NLE, if the field order is wrong. Make sure you choose "lower field" from available options. On the other hand, you didn't mention if you were trying to create a progressive DVD (from progressive footage). If so, then, of course, you shouldn't be exporting with fields.

It would be good to determine whether the problem is on disc playback, or video transcoding, as both are common causes.
I would build a dvd burn to your hard drive (create dvd volume in your authoring program). Then play it back on your computer. If it doesn't stutter there, it's a playback issue which can be bad media, RW discs, dvd player with low buffer, etc.
If it stutters on computer playback, try defragging your drive, and testing with a different file type out of FCP. DV-AVI's are always good for a test. If a different format works, your dvd authoring app probably doesn't like the codecs being used on the files that have problems. Also your bitrate may be too high. Try dropping it by 1 or 2 mbps.

I just had this happen and, as Damon mentioned above, it ended up being a bitrate issue. I dropped the max bitrate by 1Mbps and all was well.

I just burned a wedding today, and this is happening, going to try dropping down to 6000 bitrate instead of 8000. and cross my fingers.

I've seen this when accidentally using the "progressive" compression (adobe Encore v1.5) on interlaced footage.
where do you drop the bitrate down? in final cut? compressor? or dvd studio 3?

I do it when I'm compressing to an MPEG2 file (in my case, in Sorenson Squeeze).

I have been rendering mpeg2 videos using a max bitrate of 8mbps in Vegas with no problem, but I am thinking of changing max bitrate to 9.3mbps to maximize the dvd video quality. Is this a bad idea? After reading the above posts I am a little concerned this may be a mistake. I know the default in Vegas is 8mbps.

Try it and see if you can get it to work on multiple players. If you can, that'll kick ass.

I had the same problem. I exported my flick as a QT movie from Final Cut Pro then just dragged the file into toast 6 and burnt it as a dvd movie and got a lot of stutter. Did the same with iDVD and plays back fine.
You should try alternative burning programs.

I personally think a contributing factor may be the new generation of x8 speed DVD-R.
Do all you guys have 8speed DVD burners yet?
What brands are you guys using?
