Anyone out there with Sorenson Squeeze 4 try encoding with H.264 at very low bitrates (like around 1.5 Mbps)?
What kind of quality are you seeing?

I did some test with it yesterday, just amazing quality, and Quicktime will be able to play H.264 by January.(from Sorenson Product Manager)
A file of 1.26 GB gave me a file of 45.3 MB in Large format (500K)
A file of 766.9 MB gave me a file of 13.8 MB in Medium format and it is as sharp as in my sequence from FCP.
It is a must.

Hi Rich,
Just go in your Format and Compression setting and choose one of the setting AVC. H.264 is AVC (Advance Video Compression), then find a player who can play H.264. Quicktime will play H.264 only in January.

Wow, seeing that h.264 is one of the new features of Tiger - the next incarnation of OSX - I sure hope the Sorenson guy was right. I wasn't expecting it until around WWDC in the summer...

If you have Sorenson Squeeze4 now you can already see the result with VLC player.
Anyone have information about whether Quicktime supports this codec now? It's past January

I don't think so, it suppose to be this Spring with the new Mac OS.

how does it compare to sorenson 3 codec ?

I can't compare because I don't have Sorenson 3 codec, but it is much sharper than the Sorenson MPEG4, no doubt.
Yeah, H.264 is great. As long as Quicktime picks it up it's definitely going to be the "hay day" for streaming video.

It will be include in the new Mac OS 10.4 (Panther), sometime this Spring.

Princigalli, here is what they tell about H.264 compare to MPEG-2
How does H.264 compare with MPEG-2?
HD MPEG-2 content at 1920x1080 traditionally runs at 12-20 Mbps, while H.264 can deliver 1920x1080 content at 7-8 Mbps at the same or better quality. H.264 provides DVD quality at about half the data rate of MPEG-2. Because of this efficiency, H.264, an ISO standard, stands to be the likely successor to MPEG-2 in the professional media industry.

Shadow, if that's true I will be sad my FX1 us not running on the new codec. But now the question is, will everyone be able to play it? Or just Mac people, and with Tiger installed?

The latest QT Pro update has it, so it is an option in Compressor. I haven't tried it yet, but I am looking forward to it. No need to wait for Tiger (10.4), as a recent build of QT Player should handle it (I think).

Confusing.
I took a short file from FCP and ran two encodings: my typical mp4 preset, and a H.261 version, with everything else exactly the same. The mp4 looked far better and the file size was slightly smaller than the H.261 (5.1MB vs. 4.9MB).
Quicktime did play them both just fine, however, and I am using OS X 10.3.8. But the mp4 smoked the H.261 image-wise. I must be doing something wrong...

Princigalli, Tiger will have the new codec installed with the new QT, but anybody will be able to view it if they install the new version of QuickTime to be release.
