Ok not really. I just wanted to get your attention.

But what I really hear is, "I paid $3400 for this DVX and it very damn well be the best thing out there".

That is all I really hear.

Canon has Always had a great picture quality (In many cases I like the skin tones way better then the Panny). The only thing missing was the 24p and 16x9 aspect. Well folks, it's here. Don't get married to your Panasonic, it's just a camera and only a camera. If the color, 16x9 AND 24p is what you need, maybe checkout the Canon. But don't laugh at Canon and say it's "cheesy" or "lame", because actually, it's just not. And the reality is, you have invested in a Panasonic for now. If I had the cash, I would probably turn over the DVX right now. But I think I will hang out a bit and see some reviews.

Use what ever gets the job done, that's the bottom line. Lets stay positive here.

Wow. You guys must be reading posts other than what I've been, because I haven't seen too much of that, either. The overwhelming consensus of the posts seems to be "let's see the reviews!"

LOL

Yeah, I havent seen this either. Im curious from a curious camera interest but will not be buying a new camera anytime in the next few years (most likely). I bought the DVX100 knowing damn well the DVX100a was coming but bought the camera to suit my needs.

Im all for an Xl2-24p camera. Nothing upsetting about it.

My primary worry on the Canon has been, and will remain, how sturdy it is. The XL2 has the right numbers, but so did the XL1 in its era. I bought a gaggle of PD100 / PD150s simply because the XL1 was less sturdy, and that turned out to be right, no matter if glass was the big buzz then. For glass, my students had Panny D210 and 410 cameras.

Now that P is possibly from camera to output, the XL2 needs to meet some basic standards (like balanced audio) and then I will look into how sturdy it is.

Hey Slap,
What do you mean by sturdy? Like lens falling off, or view finder etc. Or are you refering to internal sturdiness, ie. stable heads.

yes, there's a lot of subtle bitterness in many of the posts on this topic... my bottom line: a brand is only as good as it's current model, so don't get attached to a brand... and remember, you can sell your camera for almost as much as you paid for it on Ebay, so don't feel like you're stuck with something and have to defend it like it's your mother.

The XL1 and XL1s have had problems in use in college environments because of lens / body aligmnment, and poor QC in the VTRs, and tendency to not handle knocks well. But college cameras take a lot of abuse.

I vote for improvement.

If the XL2 has a better image quality compared to the DVX100A, then i'll take a serious look. It has interchangeable lenses and 16/9.
It looks way way better than a big shoulder"box" cam to my eyes.

I want to see how it hanles contrasts, colors, resolution, lenses.
Again, i'll take a very serious look if it is really better than the DVX100A.

It is a very good looking camera. It looks different, it looks serious but not pretentious, it looks inventive.

I met a filmmaker yesterday that has used the XL1 and XL1S exclusively for seven years. He claimed certain parts wore out quickly, like the capstan.

Ya know, there seems to be a lot of hard feelings about the XL2, but if you take the name of the forum into consideration (like somebody above mentioned), I think that people are pretty well behaved. You'd almost think that a site called DVX user would be seriously anti-canon... not so.

right Tony

and if the XL2 is a killer camera, and if a lot of people here buy one, i just hope we will continue to share info here. There is a lot of very professional advices. It's a serious forum, people talk with respect to eachother, and we have fun.
It is one of the very best forum.

So Jarred, after all this ranting why not change the name of the site to
DVXL2user.com?
We can all be a big happy family!

Or you could split the XL stuff off on its own, and rename this site to DVXtasy.com...

(works better if you say it out loud)

We do need to make the difference between the camera and the film making, which ever model it is.

If Panasonic bothered to look here, they'd have a very important window on some Panasonic fan's opinions.

Personally, I like sticking with a company that has met my needs. I haven't even bought a DVX. Almost did last week, but waiting for the Bullet bundle.

I don't know what has happened at Sony, but it appears Panasonic has done a better job listening to it's customer base, at least the indie film maker.

If there are some cool XL2 features we all like, maybe Panasonic will have a DVX100b out in 5 months with some new killer features.

Even if it is expensive, I do wish the Pani had exchangeable lenses...

I've spent so much time on this forum learning about the Pani the last few months, that I'd hate to get an XL2. I can't imagine how an actual owner would feel. There's a lot Pani specific knowledge...

It would be nice to see the conversation turn into a candid, I do like this feature of the XL2. Some of that has happened. For example:

It's been said before: It sounds great that camera settings can be shared/exported. That would be really nice. How often do you see the request to know about settings? Sony has a home run there IMHO. I hope Pani does that soon.

You're not the only one. I feel the same way. I guess I'll just have to wait for the reviews before making my final decision.

the XL2 has interchangeable lenses and 16:9. that's why it draws a lot of attention, flexibility.

I can't imagine a reasonnably priced Panny cam about the size of a *DVX with 16:9 high dynamic range CCDs and interchangeable lenses compatible with existing manual photo lenses...worldwide happyness... ;D

..DVC Pro 50 or HD... ;D ;D ;D

lol.
I think for indie filmmakers (@ least for me), ultimately their fantasy would be a DVX size super16/35 film camera (accepting daylight spool) that actually comes with minDV video assist (16:9 of course)and kodak/fuji coming up with incredibly cheap stock with qualities like Kodak Vision II 500 ~ no make that ISO/ASA 640.

Hmmm... dailies in miniDV and footage in negs. What a wonderful dream. Editors can then do rough cuts with TC on miniDV while prints can later be finalised.
