Just had the chance to play with the XL2 today at the dvexpo east conference. I've got to say it's a nice piece of work. Canon is really playing up the native 16:9 feature. I also heard a rumor that Canon will be putting camera settings on the site for download and upload directly into the camera via firewire. That should be interesting.

Seriously, I do like the idea of being able to distribute and trade settings. It'll be--hey I liked your film, can you email me your setting file?

Yup, I did also at DV expo east and I tried out XL2. The 24p image qualities are very similar to Panasonic DVXa, without knowing from the source, you think that it came from DVXa anomorphic lense; not squeeze mode like DVXa. It's true 16:9. It's beautiful. I did not see the film transfer version on big projected screen, so I couldn't tell how good resolutions are. I also posted on

Canon worked hard to catch up Panny.

I also saw the XL2 at DV Expo. Everytime I passed the booth it kept depressing me.

It is a beautiful camera. They have clearly learned some lessons from the Panasonic.

All,
I am new to "manual" DV camera's. I always wondered about what the user said below though.

Can you really use "one" setting for an entire film? I thought one would need to change "settings" depending on the external environment like lighting conditions, ambient noise etc.

Any guidance?

It really all depends on what your artistic heart is telling you. What look are you going for? That's the hot thing about being able to have multiple scene settings. You don't have to go through the hassle of setting and resetting everytime you want to change the look. It can really help in changing environments though since a setting that worked well for you in that environment is there at the scroll of a dial.

Hey! I wrote that! :D

But, I wasn't being very clear, obviously. You might see a clip or one scene that you really like. We frequently ask for the camera settings. It would be nice to be able to share them by just posting a file... I doubt you'd use one setting for the whole film. In fact, most change the mood during the film by customizing the settings.

However, since then, I'm not sure it is done that way with the XL2. One review said you had to connect the camera's together via firewire. That doesn't mean you can't do if by downloading the settings programmatically and share them with others, but I don't have confirmation of that.

You guys are funny! Just a few months ago when the word came out that Canon will be releasing the XL2 sometime this or early next year. Everyone stood by their DVX's shunning the XL2 now it seems some of you are losing fate to the Canon. Like someone else said, If you are a good shooter, you will know what to do to get the most out of which ever camera you are using. I am sticking with my DVX100.
