View Full Version : Why wasn't the XL2 revealed at NAB this year?

I wonder why Canon didn't try and bring down the house at NAB with the XL2. Is the DV EXpo more prevalent than NAB when releasing new DV cameras?

Or does Canon have something to hide?
;)

I'm pretty excited than Canon has stepped to the plate. Thank you Panasonic for pushing the prosumer industry to new heights. ;D I wonder if Sony's gonna go back to the drawing board with their new HDV camcorder and allow it to shoot in 24p?

Good times.

Peace

I've stayed out of the whole XL2 debate, I love my DVX...
BUT...

Anybody buying one of these first ones, is a little short sighted. They made the XL1 then the XL1S, DVX100 then the DVX100A...XL2...

XL2S anyone??

Also, if this is Canon's first attempt at 24p, aren't they going to run into the sync problems, Panny ran into and fixed?

Just my 2 Lincoln's...

(edit: This probably has been said before.)

No doubt. Its definitely a wait and see thing with this.

However, didn't Canon say that this is the last SD camera that they'll do? Will there be a XL2S? Who knows.

It took Canon three years to get around to releasing the XL1s, so don't expect an XL2s until... 2008 maybe?

If Canon has the same issues with the XL2 that Panasonic did with the DVX, then they're stupid. I mean, they had almost two solid years to see what Panasonic did, surely they would learn and fix whatever needed fixing, right?

Furthermore, NAB is a show for broadcasters. The DV Expo is a show for DV camera users. The XL2 was probably released at the appropriate venue.

Hi Barry,

If I remember what you wrote : the patents in japan remain available for 18 months.

So we can conclude that Canon had choosed to wait not to innovate.
IMHO, I think they released the XL2 only to limit the switching phenomena as down as possible (i.e apple vs micorsoft).

The pana Dvx100 is clearly became THE leader in the prosumer market and THE first in the heart of indie filmakers (24p,24p,24p).

I know nothing about Japanese patents, so can't comment there.

In DV, Canon has never been an innovator, they always wait until the last possible minute, until everyone else has played their cards. The exception I can think of is that I think they were the first with an actual 30P progressive-scan camera (on the original Elura and ZR-something, but they discontinued that feature pretty quickly.

Canon appears to like to be last on the block, after everyone else has played their hand, so they can update or trump any specific feature. Sony appears to not give a hoot what the consumer wants. And Pansonic appears to be in tune with the consumer, rapidly innovating and bringing products to the market that we've been demanding, faster than either of the other two.

Hmmm... So what do you think Panasonic will do? Wait and see how the XL2 does and if it starts taking business, revise the DVX100A? Maybe a DVX150? ;D Have you heard any rumblings from the Panasonic folks about a revision?

Keep in mind, they just released the DVX100A only about seven months ago! I don't think Panasonic HAS to do anything, not for years. The Sony VX1000 sold for years after Canon introduced the XL1, and the PD150 became a blockbuster seller even after Canon introduced the revised XL1s.

Panasonic has released a nearly perfect camera, and at $1500 less, they're not even really directly competing. I know they offer the same 24P feature, etc., but the Canon is nearly 50% more expensive.

I think Panasonic's next move is going to be tapeless, using their P2 memory cards. And I think they'll introduce an HD model of something 24P in the next year, although I would expect theirs to be in the $20,000 to $25,000 range.

If the XL2 does well in some REAL testing of it's ability in the 16:9 mode and passes with flying colors, then I think that Canon will sell a shit load of them to new users of Canon products. However, I think it is a no brainer (after looking at the body style of the XL2, basically the same as the XL1s) that they made the XL2 to sell a camera to as many XL1 and XL1s guys that they can. There are alot of people who are very product loyal, just as we are with our Panasonic DVX. So it makes sense as a Manufaturer to take full advantage of that loyalty and make their current client list another product so they can spend their money on it.

As far as will the XL2 have some of the same problems the early DVX models have, I agree with Barry, if they do they are STUPID! Canon has had ample time to study the Panasonic DVX and get it right. I would bet they have a few DVX's lying around the Canon headquarters..maybe with all of the parts taken out..ha ha.

So I think, bottom line. If the XL2 has a kick ass 16:9 picture, then this camera will be a HUGE success for indie, doc makers of the world needing the wide screen 24p aand caring less about the 4:3. But at the same time, if someone is wanting a kick ass 4:3 camera, then the XL2 is not a very good option when measuring value versus dollars.

I again agree with Barry, Panasonic doesn't have make a move at all in regards to making another great light weight, 1/3 CCD 24p camera. They already have that. HD model will probably be their next move, only makes sense.
