Ok, im in college, an art major, specifically interested in videoart. My overstressed, underpaid parents have GRACIOUSLY offered to purchase me a replacement for my very amateurish Sony TRV70.(Aliasing and vertical bleeding are killing me, cause i project big.) I Assumed of course somethign along the lines of TRV950, but they insisted a DVX, XL1, or VX2000 or soemhtign along thoes lines, would serve me better, plus i can make a living as a videographer. mind you, i have read alot, and tried my damndest to learn all i could about high end video production, but without a good cam in your hands, its kinda futile. so im asking for all of your expertise in this matter.

Now here comes the question:

The VX2000, in a video still comparison side by side with the DVX100, was noticibly sharper, brighter, and had better color. (http://www.bealecorner.com/dvx100/compare/index.html) Ok, so is there a resolution gap between the DVX100A and the DVX100? because, the VX seems to win hands down against the DVX100... in terms of picture quality, and price. And i know the DVX is used by filmakers. therefore wouldnt it have to have the sharpest picture to translate to film? or am i missing something?

please help clear me up

Alot of filmakers run away from sharpness, because sharpness screams video. That is why on the camera you can turn that sharpness down, to "blur the lines". this is also why, with the VX2000, people that made dramatic films would usually use a promist filter, to knock down the sharpness.

I looked at that web comparison, but it seems lacking in some major details--like the sharpness settings on the DVX. You have to be careful about sharpness--is it from CCD or lens quality--or is it from digital edge enhancement? You can crank the sharpness way up on the DVX, but few of ever do that. As Jarred mentioned, who wants that digital harshness? I've seen large digital projections of PD-150 (VX2000) footage and of DVX100 footage and there is no comaparison--the DVX100 footage looks much better.

I like video art--I've been watching it since the days of Nam June Paik. Most of it sucks technically, so why not get a DVX100 and break away from the pack? And your wise parents are right, you'll be able to use it to make a living, too.

Thanks you guys, BIG help. plus im sure that tiny bit of difference between the two ist too noticible when the video frames are running. stills always look worse. DVX100A it is. Just another queston real quick, anyone use their DVX for Wedding, Dance performance, or theatrical performance documentation? hows the useable lowlight capability? (sorry im being annoying)
