Confirmed: XL2 has a 12-bit DSP
Just received this via email from Canon USA:

--------------------------------------------------------

Since the press release concerning the XL2, we have had many
inquiries as to the bit depth of its Digital Signal Processor (DSP).
The bit depth of a DSP is important because, as the number of
bits increases, the number of gradations processed and,
therefore, the quality of the image, increases. As a comparison,
8-bit processors use 256 gradations, while 12-bit processors use
4,096 gradations.

The XL2 has a 12-bit DSP, customized by Canon exclusively for
use in the XL2.

Actually that doesn't settle it. *I still want to fight... just kidding. ;D *But truthfully this just goes to show all the canon enthusiests that 12 bit DSP does make a difference, and that the XL2 would not be "just as good" without it. *While on the other hand, Panasonic enthusiasts such as myself now have less cannon fodder (no pun intended) against the XL2. *I guess it's just down to chip size. *how much is that XL2 again? :) *maybe i should take another look in the couch coushins for a little extra cash. :)
