Anyone else like Rushmore and Wes Anderson? I just picked up a copy of Rushmore (Criterion disc!) and the more I watch that movie, the more I like it. Bill Murray's performance totally trumps his tired performance in the overrated Lost in Translation. The script, written by Anderson and Owen Wilson is really well put together. The plays within the movie are just hilarious and I like the device of having the curtain opening for each act. Jason Schwartman is amazing--he seems to have sort of disappeared though. Whether or not you like Anderson, you have to admit that he has a very distinct style.

I considered it one of the top 5 movies of the '90s, actually. "Royal Tenenbaums" was a weeeeak follow-up.

The Royal Tenenbaums was a let down compared to Rushmore, but I still have to admit I like it. It's deeply flawed and I hate Ben Stiller's performance, but I'm such a big Gene Hackman fan and Kumar Pallana is a riot as Pagoda. Anjelica Huston and Danny Glover were also pretty good and the soundtrack is a gem. It doesn't quite hold together, but many of the performances are so engaging that it's still enjoyable.

Just saw in the IMDb that Anderson is in post-production on The Life Aquatic with Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, and Bud Cort (!). Even if the script's a total mess, it should be fun.

Whaat?! Bill Murray was amazing in Lost in Translation!
I actually think the main problem with Royal Tenenbaums, while midly entertaining (relative to Rushmore), was that it had too many "stars". *One ends up expecting far too much for Anderson's type of film to make good.
If you liked Rushmore, I'd highly recommend checking out Bottle Rocket, Anderon's first venture into feature film-making. *It's quite different from Rushmore, but shares it's soft, witty, often sarcastic and cynical humor. *Very nice :)

Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and the Royal Tenenbaums are all great, but Tenenbaums ultimately takes the cake.

I enjoyed Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tennenbaums, but Rushmore is definitely my favorite of the three. Hopefully Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson will continue to do projects together for some time to come. Wonderful writing.
By the way, I also loved Bil Murray in Lost in Translation.

Whaat?! Bill Murray was amazing in Lost in Translation!
I knew someone would take issue with that, but I still don't get all the hoopla over LIT. I thought it was mildly entertaining, but forgettable. Could it just be that Sophia Coppola and Scarlett Johanson were the flavors of the month? :-) Still, I can't fault anyone for liking Bill Murray.
I did like Bottle Rocket, although it's in a minor key compared to Rushmore.

The Royal Tennenbaums, Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, they are all great, but my favorite is Rushmore!!!
The actor Jason Schwartzman who played Max Fischer is all grown up now, Has anyone seen CQ by Roman Coppola? He was in it. He looks nothing like what he was like in Rushmore.

He was in the movie Slackers about 2 years ago. He is also heard every week playing on the opening theme song for the television show The O.C. He is the drummer for the the band Phantom Planet.

I just watched this again last night.
Brilliant.
And nothing any of us couldn't do with the DVX.
And talent.

Brilliant is the word all right. If I could write 15 pages as good as that script, I'd be celebrating. There are so many great moments in that movie. It also has a satisfying ending--the toughest part of a film to do right.
