Very little crowing or buzzing (or wildlife sounds of any kind) in the Canon forums . . . (fora).

Except for Bob Hudson, who appears to be everywhere.

Yeah, I had made that same observation to Jarred just yesterday. Nobody seems overly excited, which is, like, really weird...

I've seen a few "those DVXers are no longer king of the hill" type things here and there but more of the "big deal" phrases overall.

My thought is that it's just like the first DVD player or something like that. That was considered a "real advance". The second one was just a competitor and the thought was... (regarding selection anyway)

- Cool, it'll drop the market price of the one I really want, yay for competition.

- It's got this one extra feature that's really nice (since there was no where to go in other advances) that'll bite some consumers.

It's like "Well we went to Pluto first and planted a flag"...
"Oh yeah, well we went to Pluto and planted TWO flags"

Nice tiny bonus but the real advance (the trip there and back) has been done. Unless they come up with a 24p+p (whatever that would be).

It's all about the footage, the specifications can be argued all day (I'm guilty of that already) and I don't think anyone, including the right-wing Canon people are going to jump (or stay seated as the case may be) until then.

There's someone (I think Simon Beers) that's going to post some 24p 16:9 footage tomorrow (the same place the "clown" footage came from).

I think there was so much build up and wild speculation, that the actual camera is sort of anti-climactic. They were expecting something revolutionary--like the original XL-1, but by Canon's own words--the XL-2 is evolutionary. Also, they've spent so much time running down the DVX and 24P--what can they say now? You can bet those XL-2's are all going to be locked on 24p. We have met the enemy and he is...us. I would hope that the XL-2's 16:9 mode is superior--advance the market and put some pressure on Panasonic. I mean the Canon engineers have had two years to analyze the DVX. There should be some improvements.

The Canon XL series has always been the Great White Hope of low-budget digital filmmaking, at least until our DVX came along... so of course everyone expected that a sequel to the camera that (along with the "S" version) lasted for what seems like a decade would deliver The Next Step in being able to make a theatrical feature for pennies. * That step, of course, is providing an image that more closely approximates anamorphic 35mm footage, the gold standard of motion picture beauty. *And the only way to do that, with any SIGNIFICANT advances over the DVX, was to go to HDV. *And they didn't.

So it's no surprise that people are a bit lukewarm... I for one am happy because I ALWAYS like to have the latest and greatest sub-$5k camera, and I feel like I can afford to hold onto my DVX and wait for the first big HDV cam release before upgrading... always good to get 3-4 years out of your camera, instead of going the eBay route after only 1-2...

This all goes back to the CANON loyalists that would not succumb to the PANI 24p just to spite. Now? These are the same people that will be dropping the XL1's and getting the Xl2 and soley for 24p! LOL

I think its great. The more the merrier.
