Was at Birns and Sawyer today in Hollywood. They haven't even received one XL2 yet! Rentals are doing well but "Sales" seemed pretty upset Canon dupped them a bit. Seems Samy's Camera (down the street, was there too) got their XL2s shipped in early and have already sold about 20 of their stock and B&S is pretty mad about it. I didn't know it was so competitive. B&S still has stacks of pre-orders for the camera and said they won't receive any until the end of this month...wow. The great B&S is out in the cold for awhile.

So we L.A. people are better off buying online I suppose but----there's a Samy's in Santa Monica but I'm not sure if they have any in stock yet. It would be cool to be able to hold the cam and chat with another sales rep at another store before purchasing. It would be great if we could see some more footage of the camera too. Not seeing as much footage as quickly as I thought. Anyway, B&S will sell below retail but I'm not sure what the price will be. Do let us know of another place where we can at least purchase the camera in Los Angeles.

have you checked with Bel Air camera? they might have it. also, this is a long shot, but there is a little camera store on hollywood blvd near western called Mel Pierce camera. They have often had stuff that samys would be sold out of. they are mostly still camera stuff, but they do carry canon video cams. what about the samys in pasadena?

also, i go to a place called hollywood studio rentals in burbank all the time for equipment, they were supposed to be getting the cams in. they are really cool guys, and might let you check the cam out if they have it in.

Yes Hollywood Studio Rentals...how could I've forgotten HSR---always thought of them as just a rental place I suppose but thanks for reminding me. Didn't know there was a Samy's in Pasadena and how the heck did you get "Sho'Nuff" in that little animated box! I love "The Last Dragon"! It's so underrated...so underrated.

I think Abelcine has an LA office as well as one in NY. Check out http://www.abelcine.com.

All I know is that I visited Birns and Sawyer last Thursday Sept 2 to measure the XL2 for the fit of our accessories. They had received a small quantity of cameras that day and I was told that there would be no more for a few weeks or so , when "the boat comes in".

I was told a small quantity had been airshiped in advance and distributed to key dealers on an allocation basis. Clearly some dealers got more than others.

Birns and Sawyer said they were putting a couple in rental and one on display. Whether they did that or went a head and sold them I don't know.

When I was in Samy's (main store on Fairfax)on Tuesday Sept 7, I was told that they had sold their initial stock.

I suspect they will be in very short supply until later this month.

I was in B&S this morning, yes they have an xl2 on display. Saw some demo footage, played with the camera, keeping my DVX.

Cuppajoe : the Abel Cine guy here8)...

Yes we (Abel CineTech) do indeed have the XL2's in stock, along with plenty of DVX100A's. We are located in Burbank. Plenty of info at www.abelcine.com.

I have not had a chance to extensively shoot with the camera yet, but from all of our current DVX owners who Demo-ed the camera in our shop it is generally a mixed feeling vs the DVX. Advantanges & Disadvantages to both cameras.

I really feel it really comes down to how/what you shoot and the purely subjective nature of the art we are all creating here. Most importantly, shoot with the camera you feel comfortable with. You'll always get the better image that way....
