View Full Version : Actual Footage from Sony's new HDV cam in "25

I found this online...pretty amazing. *It's from a PAL camera (50i) and the footage is deinterlaced and converted to 720p at 25fps. *I forget the URL it was from, and to save the guy who posted its bandwith I'm going to just put up some frame grabs. *I did not record this footage and I don't mean take credit for it; I'm just posting it here because I haven't seen it posted on dvxuser yet. *Of course, nothing really ever moves in the whole clip (no camera motion, VERY little other motion) and editing must be kind of weird when each group of six frames are linked together...but oh well. *It looks great nonetheless:

The dynamic range still screams video but it's really quite good, and the resolution is awesome. *Looks noiseless, too, like the pd170 (I shot with a pd150 today and with +18dB of gain it wasn't much worse than the dvx with +3dB of gain.) *Also, this has been through a bunch of generations of compression AND has been shrunk and deinterlaced.

My opinion: *they all look fantastic except the wide shot where a TON of highlight detail is lost. *Also, the resolution there is pretty weak..maybe it was just out of focus but it doesn't look THAT much better than a good progressive scan DV blow-up to the same resolution. *Still, the highlights look to be under 100IRE so the detail is largely recoverable, but it still has that harsh video look. *I WANT BIGGER CCDS.

Edit: Grammar corrected because I can't write when I have to wake up at 6:50 in the morning....

..yeah the wide shot bites dog butt.. i wonder whats going on there? no detail-- horrible color fidelity-- looks to have a weak dynamic range.. im suprised that came from the same camera as the other pics.. perhaps its going to be a JVC clone after all .. please tell me there are advancements made by now over that thing.. even if its by sony "the wonderbuddy of consumers". i guess time will tell

but the rest looks great. :)

Looks like the Sony VX2000 in 16:9. *I don't think those pics are doing the camera any justice...and especially in PAL? *I'm not impressed with any of those pics.

They should have let Johnnie do the test.

Those pics don't look that impressive to me.

We still need to wait for more.

All the best

hard to tell...

hi rez for sure, but the CCDs seem to react and overload exactly the same as the 2 PD150s i had...and sold...

...and the green color is so dull....again...like the PD150

but it's hard to tell just from these grabs.

i sincerely hope it can do better, if not, it's not much better than the HD1.

Based purely on these grabs it looks like crap. :D

John, here's the link

It took me about three hits to see it. Not sure if the server gets over crowded.

Gee I just tried it and it tells me the cow got lost in the pasture 404 error. So you might have to try later.

The original footage is referenced as having been shot by SonyEPM, a Sony Vegas technician, and the thread is on the Sony Vegas forum.

Here's the thread:

Here's the original link to the footage in 1280x720P wm9:

That is the original footage; I was having trouble accessing it so I posted images when the download finally worked. The footage is truer, though as I compressed these as JPEGS.

I can't log in (yes, I wrote the usernmae/password correctly and the same case sizes as listed). Can someone tell me what is the problem?

I had to try it several times. Maybe to many people are trying to see it at the same time.

I thought I'd play around with one of the pictures in photoshop. Here's what it turned into after a couple of minutes (be sure to check out the original pic again for comparison):

Well, it seems the picture stopped working. I need to get rid of Angelfire. Does anyone know of a free place where I can host pictures?

Anyway, if you want to check out the photoshopped pic go to:

http://www.angelfire.com/ar2/buyitcheap/5_copy__photoshopped_.jpg

I think it gives a better idea of what the footage can look like (I did it quickly in photoshops, so I'm sure if someone took their time they could make it look better).

If the picture or link doesn't work you have to copy & paste. It seems to work suddenly and then stop working. Very odd.

If those pictures were by a Sony rep, then why didn't they keep it at the original res, format and bandwidth to really show it off? Who cares about the amount of storage it takes up if you're trying to impress people, and put two versions up if you're worried about slow downloaders.

I really want to see some native, un-buggerised stuff from this camera.

Well, Sony as in Vegas software, not Sony as in consumer electronics manufacturer... he's a guy who works for the Sony digital media software division, which basically means he used to work at Sonic Foundry before Sony bought Sonic Foundry.

I'm sure he has no more connection with the guys who build the camcorders than somebody in GE Finance has to do with the guys who build GE refrigerators...

As to why he didn't keep it in full-rez, I don't know... I wish he had.

the images who ever shooted are fine. but i still think the lack of colour in it.

observe the 2 people sitting in the garden. looks like a white layer is pasted on them., as of conon xl2

observe the leaves colour. it looks pale.

well we have to wait and see what progess does sony is made.
