I hear it is amazing with the right setting,
but gotta see it with my own eyes.
so far I have seen only 3 footages, and none of them were 24P with cine gamma+cine matrix on.

(Key John Hudson's Storytime Music)
Once I was at D ICKs Last Resort (Yeah, I know, trendy) in San DIego and was scamming on this fine as chick (nostalgicly referred to as Green Pants; she had on some really tight green jeans)
Anyway, Everyone is totally drunk and dancing at the tables and throwing shit like they do, when all of a sudden, this little Dwarf chick (she had arms and legs) literally walks across the room and UNDER the table directly towards me and starts dancing with ME!
Im trippin now and Im looking at the Green CHick pants girl and shes looking at me like WTF? *And IM like WTF? *And everyone in the bar is looking LITERALLY everyone is watching to see what I will do. *HOw will I react?
Will I get the broom out? *Will I chuck her against the wall? *Will I start a chorus of Ding Dong the fucking Witch is DEad? *Noooooooooooooooo!
You wanna know why!?
Cause Im a nice guy, thats why. *SO, I politley smile and dance with her. *It was the lomngest song in the history of the world. *
Just wanted to share.

aight, so i went to a rental place today and they had an xl2 i could play with so i got a tape and messed around for a little bit. They had a 14x lens on it, with a big fuck off mattebox with a huge follow focus system, and a gigantic frickin battery pack, and a huge quick release gizmo. The thing was heavy! I never used that lens before and with that follow focus thing attached, and how heavy it was, i was havin a hard time focusing and exposing the lens.
anyway, im not posting any footage, cause that might kill my server. but i have some stills. If i had more time with camera i would get some better results. Some shots are a little grainy. I think i might rent it this weekend, without all that shit on it. i also did some color correct in after effect 6.5. No magic bullet, i was using the new built in color correction tool.
Oh, and the guy who was the Iraqi in that short "In The Name Of God" was there and asked me take a couple shots of him.

Rich Lee
09-24-2004, 07:07 PM
hey John, the 24p looked good. i'd like to mess around a bit more with the camera. Its really early for me to tell, but the raw footage reminds me alot of the footage that i was getting with the xl1s i had last year, but with more detail. I dont think this camera had any of the cine-gamma fuctions turned on. Also, my color correct on these images may not be helping it out much.
Although, i do think the 3rd image down has a nice filmic look.
The camera itself seemed pretty slick, all the buttons felt much nicer then the xl1. very smooth.
Neil Rowe
09-25-2004, 05:55 AM
..hmmm , im not digging it (film look) either, I think the camera is a cool cam with a great image, but as far as film like imagery.. i agree that i havent seen anything that doesnt look like video to me come from it yet. it seems every time someone has footage or a shot.. its always something about maybe the gamma not working, or not turned on.. not that i really care one way or the other, but im just still waiting to be impressed by its filmlike asthetics.
thanks for the shots though rich! this thread might still live after all :P
I think we're all waiting for a film-like demo because no one has done a 24p Cinegamma, CineMatrix shoot :( - not sure why.
Neil Rowe
09-25-2004, 07:09 AM
:) ..im not convinced thats actually the case yet. Im starting to lean towards thinking that we've seen 24p cinegamma and matrix from the camera already.. with it working, and its just not that great is all.
J.R. Hudson

Exactly my thoughts Neil. *The empahasis thus far seems to be a very VIDEO looking image. *(Not that theres anything wrong with that :P :) )
Neil Rowe
09-25-2004, 09:46 AM
LOL * *..you need to get a little "tm" thingy like terry is always using for your: "not that theres anything wrong with that."
i think i need a catch phrase too. i say "anyway.." alot and im always typing multiple dots *everywhere.. hmmm.. i have said that something "bites dog butt" a couple times too. but i need something to really cinch it up.. you know.. something with that zing :P
anyhow ..alot of people would argue that the XL2 DOES look filmlike, but ...im just not seeing it. it just looks video to me. im not biased.. just going by what i see, am i missing something ? :-/ ..then again alot of people also argued that the PD150 was filmic...

Just got back from my local TV supply dealer where I checked out both the XL2 and the Panasonic DVX-100a for the first time. Here's my initial response (having never owned either):
The XL2 footage looks freakin' incredible, especially at the 16:9 ratio. Also, the fact that most everything is knob or switch driven compared to the clunky Panasonic menu is a huge plus. As far as nailing that "filmic" look, it was easily on par with the Panasonic, or better.
Now I've just got to decide which to get: an XL1 (they're cheap now with the release of the XL2), a DVX100a, or the XL2. Main concern is, do I really want to wait 4-5 months to save the dough for the 2?
PFP_VIDEO

Hows thats switch driven iris compared to say the clunky old school incremental iris wheel on the DVX. When you where messing around with the cine gamma, did you remember your settings from the sliding scale readout? The numbers used in the DVX'S ancient menu system is so hard for me to remember. Not to mention the cool XL2 non line level swithcable xlr inputs. I would pay extra for those features to.

I didn't really mess around with the cinegamma settings, given that I'm still kind of a newbie at this and didn't know what they were! I do now, though, and will check them out the next time I go down there.
Plainly put, I'm sold on the XL2. It looks sharper, the controls are tighter (especially the manual focus ring... and the whole barrell rings complaint? Remember, this is the STOCK lense. I imagine Canon will make one that has them later.), and it has TRUE 16:9, which looks amazing. Oh, and I love the iris switch. Super easy to use.
I'm sold. Now I just gotta scrape together 4,000 more. :P

The footage I have seen so far is indeed wonderful looking in clarity and resolution. In a Video way. Still, I can't argue how nice the it looks comparing it to the XL1. The fact that anyone would cpnsider getting an XL1 now is beyond me.
I'm not buying into the 'clunky' Pani menu however. I'm not even sure what that means actually. PFP_VIDEO probally said it best on that subject.
When can someone show us the dman 'filmic' nature of the XL2? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Frye? Anyone?

Yeah, it does seem extremely odd that there has not been one example of 24p footage posted (that I'm aware of) since the XL2s release almost four weeks ago.
By now I was expecting tons of test footage flooding the various websites. NOTHING!!! How hard can it be? ???

There are three reasons why there is not much XL2 footage
1:) People are lazy
2:) People are try to decide if they wanna sell there DVX for an XL2
3:)People dont knw which to get, the XL2, DVX, or the unreleased FX-1.

lol ... it doesnt suck, but IMHO the in camera cinegamma and matrix functions do. they just simply dont look as good as the DVX.
others can say they do, but im really not sure what they are seeing that im not. perhaps its just the clouded vision one gets when in love. ? like we all have with our DVXs sometimes...
i already currently have the money set aside to buy the next great independent filmmaking cam. .. problem is, it hasnt arrived yet. even if the sony pro is 24p, and 30p and all, i might still hold off to see what the return fire looks like? why, cause it will be better no doubt ..as always, and the DVX suits me fine for now anyway. but when i see the cam .. ill know it. it will glow. and i will run up and caress it in my hands, and pour sweet caramel over its lense, and we will ride a horse into the sunset where we will sip wine from the petals of an endangerd orchid just as a meteor shower
adds its sparkle to the aurora borealis, and a whale in the harbor breaches surface and jumps over the moon.

Okay. Here is some footage for you.
One video is the XL2 in 16x9, Cinegamma ON, Cinecolor On, Color gain +2. All other settings are default. I just got my replacement XL2 at 6:15 this evening and after assembling it I went out and shot this footage. It was turning to dark and it was cloudy so no magic hour footage. Just some "almost dark" to dark footage. No gain was used on any of these and the shutter is 1/48. Because of time constraints I had to do run and gun so no tripod and no really great composition. I tried to focus on motion as many have commented on the 24p not looking so much like film. So forgive the sloppiness.
The second video is one that I shot at work to do a comparison between the DVX and XL2 in the exact same environment. It will alternate between 16x9 and 4x3 pillarboxed in 16x9 for the DVX footage. I didn't have a DVX100A or anamorphic adapter to compare. Since the significant benefit of the XL2 is 16x9 clarity I decided to do it this way. It also gives a chance to see the field of view of the XL2 in comparison. Also both were white balanced on the same whiteboard except for the outside footage where the Xl2 color balance is off. Also....the time of day is different so that affects the colors.Now....this one is really sloppy as it was never intended to be viewed by anyone but me. I used it to compare colors and sharpness and ultimately decided on the XL2.
Now before I get flamed I was actually still in love with my DVX when I shot this and was reassurring myself that the DVX100 was the girl for me. So I was extra careful to make sure everything was set right for the DVX to have a fair chance! But ultimately the Xl2 stole my heart.
In the 2nd clip I use the default f6 preset of the DVX and same settings on the DVX listed above.
Please don't criticize the cinematoraphy and realize I mainly did this so those of you who have been craving 24p cine footage can see it. In all fairness the cinegamma does not have a major effect on the image the way the DVX does. IT is subtle but works. BUt if you want the "saturated colors" of the DVX you may have to tweak in post.
These 2 files are .wmv files renamed to .wmvx so that you are forced to download them and not stream them. Just rename the extension and enjoy. Hope you see the potential of the Xl2 but don't expect the cine settings to blow your doors off. Also if anyone else wants to host these feel free as I know that this is going to p**s off my webhost because of the bandwidth.

Great stuff icecle22!
The XL2 footage does look a lot sharper and natural-like compared to the DVX. The DVX had an almost a muddy appearance. However, I still saw chromatic aberration (purplish fringe) present in the XL2 images.
Overall, you did a fine job of comparing the two.
Thanks.

I wasn't trying to convince anyone to get the XL2 over the DVX. I made that decision based on my own needs.
The DVX still seems to have a little more "mojo" as far as the in-camera look of film. But the Xl2 seems to have more resolution and overall potential. I really believe that I can get the look of the DVX with the clarity of the XL2 using post production software. Also 16x9 is a major need for me and I didn't want to hassle with the anamorphic adapter. The only thing I really miss from the DVX now is the 3.5" LCD and the manual zoom which I use sometimes for effects.....you know.....really, really fast snap to shots.
Also....that chromatic aberation in the outside shots was partly my fault. The sky was overexposed quite a bit and my color balance was off. Way to much reds in that shot. However having said that the Xl2 does seem slightly more prone to this and you need to watch out for it. But other shots I did in a similar situation don't show anywhere near that much, if at all.
What problem causes the purple chromatic abberation? Packing too many pixels on a CCD? The 20x lens?

So, does that mean you'll send Canon's commission check back?
;D
Seriously, you did help--after a lot of research and consideration here--to firm up our decision. While the DVX might or might not have more "mojo" in the camera, it looks like the higher resolution of the XL2 lends itself more to post production which, IMHO, makes it the better (or at least more flexible) choice for us.
Thanks again for posting.

The funny thing is that I think I was on Canons bad side! I posted some "colorless" images that I captured when I first got the XL2 and posted them over on the DVinfo.net boards and asked opinions about and and even inquired if it might be defective. It started a huge debate about colors and qulaity of the camera that even spilled over here!
I got calls....yes direct to my house.....from several Canon Reps and even an employee trying to help. While they did help I couldn't help but get the feeling that I kinda P**sed then off by posting negative comments so soon before giving the camera a fair chance. The truth is I learned how to "milk" the camera for some really good images and probably was too reactionary with my early posts.
But right out of the box....default settings it does seem a little flat in the color department. especially compared to the DVX in Cine mode.
Peace!
