Have a shoot coming up and need to simulate some innards falling out of a gut.

What's your favorite material for this? Animal parts? Foam rubber?

saw this on youtube... looks like it might work as an easy way for the intestines and free:

There is another one that involves sausage casings, spaghetti, and food coloring (though in the vid the food coloring was too bright... maybe replace it with some good fake blood and chunks..

also apparently pantyhose and paper towels can do the trick...

Nice, thanks, I like the sausage casing and spghetti one. I was thinking about just getting some animal parts from the butcher...I think it will be fine as lone as I keep them on ice until the shoot, then toss after...is there any crazy unsanitary danger to this approach?

uncooked animal products would always carry a risk.... it's the cooking of it that kills it off and makes it safe to consume...

I'd think, yes in this case... not 100%, but certainly a risk, and maybe a health code violation if you got down to it... but, i wouldn't really know... I'm just speculating....

I'm just thinking of that being on someone and the bacteria, etc that might spread around... someone rubs their eyes or something, and... yeah.... only if you really don't like the people :)

From googling around, seems like you could probably get a nice simulation on minimal funds anyways... so, if there are other good options, I wouldn't even consider using the real thing...

I think the spaghetti and sausage casing could look good if you made a better blood than just their food coloring...

Good points. Thanks. Will proceed with some testing this weekend...luckily, much of this shooting is in dark places with only flashlights and other small streaks of light illuminating the guts and blood. So it's a little easier to get away with it.

here is one a bit more involved (said takes about an hour) but the end result looks really nice:

if you've got access to latex....

That last one is really good. And might actually be the best results I've seen so far...

I was contemplating doing this in post, but don't think I could pull it off. It cannot look at all fake, and I think I can get closer to that with practicals. Besides, the nature of the shooting is all hand-held camcorder, like found footage, so I would have to shoot much higher res, with much more lighting, and less movement(add some of that in post too).

e.coli

I can cook them and then won't it be a sweet surprise when the crew finds out what's for Lunch!!!!

:)

I think I will try to test a couple of these methods by this weekend and see how they go. Will put up some shots here probably.

yeah... i like that last one... seems simple enough, and basically the less precise you are, the better it will probably look....

paint a bunch of latex on a flat surface, roll up some paper towels, put 'em on one end, and roll up a big burrito, adding deformities along the way....

we just did this Saturday.. pantyhose filled with newspaper, soaked in Jello.

There was a Nurse Jackie episode in which a guy was rolled in, laying on his back, with about a foot of his intestines protruding from his belly. They were surprisingly clean.

Yeah. Real blood tends to run off real organs.

That*panty hose trick looks good to me too...again, this only has to be glanced in random flashlights, etc. Will prob test that one too see what's cheaper.

Sorry what exactly do you mean soaked in Jello? Like you mixed up the Jello juice and just didn't refrig it, left it runny and then soaked panty hose in it?

I would go with the panty hose trick. Highly recommended to me for quick shots.

we stuffed panty hose with newspaper, and then made some "Red" jello, but didn't let it congeal. just soaked the intestines in the liquid part over night, along with a tad of fake blood. They look great on camera. I'll post some stills from our shoot where we used them as soon as I can get the footage captured.

What is it with cheerleaders, anyway? Can't keep their clothes on, or their organs in.

I like to use bread. Aluminum wire for a frame, and wrap bread around it. It's really easy to shape. I then coat the bread "molds" with liquid latex. Wait for it to dry, freeze it (you can store in the freezer so it doesn't go rotten as fast). From there I use cheap blush or other skin coloured makeup to make it less white, cover that up with lot's of fake blood and it looks pretty good

These of course only last so long, but it doesn't take too many coats of liquid latex (3 moderately thin layers) so they are quite disposable

I go to my local butchers shop and buy pig intestines. Just remember to cook them before you shoot, if it's a hot one you'll regret not doing it!

I've actually been liking this one the most, except I've been using rolled up paper towels. It's actually somewhat easier than the panty-hose method, though I feel like that does give a better feel than the latex...squishier.

Quick and dirty test convinced me this should work out fine for what I need:

http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/lc/entrails_test.mov

That is the latex-wrapped paper-towels, and then the pantyhose solution under. I will likely use the stuffed panty-hose as a dark, bloody base inside the shirt.

Entrails: check. Wound up using rolled up paper towels wrapped in a latex burrito shell, then set with powder. Was pretty easy and will look deliciously gross glistening with blood in the dark. Made a bunch of these yesterday. Also have some of the panty-hose version to mix in. They seen to make a good base under these guys which will actually hang out.
