no luv for the 7d....sux

Tramm showed the 7d plenty of love, but she was playing hard to get. So now he's dating 7d's younger sister - the easier, less classy one that everybody has played around with at some stage.

Seriously though, this is awesome... I wonder how many more possibilities/performance he can possibly squeeze out of this already ridiculously over-achieving camera.

I am very proud to announce that we have started support for the
Canon 550D / T2i in a branch of the Magic Lantern tree. Thanks to
the assistance of arm.indy and an anonymous contributor, we were
able to sign an initial Magic Lantern firmware image and port the
existing code to work with the version 1.0.8 firmware in the 550D.
http://vimeo.com/13793063
The first version will have audio meters, lens data and maybe manual
audio gain plus monitoring on the A/V jack. I haven't found the
video ram device yet (vram_get_number() returns -1 on all devices),
so zebra stripes and histograms won't work for a little while.
There might also not be a menuing system initially since there are
no "spare" buttons on the 550D in movie mode and we still do not
have a way to integrate with Canon's menus.
The initial testing version will be available to those brave enough
to test it and with a spare SD card that they can dedicate to the
project. It will come in two pieces: an installation firmware file
that will set the autoboot flag and write the boot block to the SD
card, and an AUTOEXEC.BIN that the camera will load automatically
when that card is in the camera. Unlike the 5D Mark II, it will
only be possible to build unsigned AUTOEXEC.BIN files for the
firmware image.
Please send me an email if you want to participate in the alpha tests.

I'm not sure why EVERYONE on this forum doesn't have a T2i? Not as their main camera, but as a quick and dirty, just heading out to shoot something camera. It's fine as a main camera too....but I'm just saying....it's so dang cheap...and such an over achiever for it's price. I just shot a wedding yesterday/last night (photos)....it totally ROCKED! It more than paid for its self in ONE SHOOT. DUH. T2i no brainer. This is just pure cream. Congrats all T2i owners. Thanks Trammel!

Canon is protecting the 7D for one reason or another. You watch, just like they held off on the firmware updates for the 5D Mark II, but then released a massive update, Canon will eventually follow suit with a firmware update to the 7D with similar functionality.

NICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can a firmware be made to stop the 12min video limitation ? thx moe52

the reason it has the limitation is due to file size and the format the cards use i believe just like the hvx200 and p2 cards if they were to get around it they would basically need to make ti break up the video file into parts.

btw i almost jizzed in my pants to see progress on this i figured 7d would have got it first and then down the line maybe the t2i might. thank you!!

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I'm at work right now and can't do a lot of research.

But can Trammel get rid of the Aliasing and bring the resolution up to par with the hacked GH1? I'm not too concerned about the audio or Zebra stripes, but really just want a cleaner overall picture with good, alias free 720.

It seems like the Aliasing is possible since can't the camera be reprogrammed to not skip every other line?

If Tram can solve this, I will gladly buy a 550d and donate a couple hundred bucks to him.

Wow, maybe you should just get a GH1

gene_can_sing
08-02-2010, 12:51 PM
The thing is, I don't want a GH1. Canon has much better, faster zooms which I use all the time, plus I like the low light of the Canons, the shallower DOF and the image aesthetic.

But it is nice to have Alias free image and better resolution for deep, wide shots (a weakness of the Canons) and good useable 720p would be REALLY nice. Tester 13 showed that increasing the resolution and making a better image is very possible, so why not throw it out there. The audio stuff is nice, but I have no problem doing the audio separate.

No, but the codec improvements mean that the codec keeps all the resolution the GH1 was sending it. The end result is much sharper imagery than a non-hacked GH1.

All I can say DCloud is that Tester 13 showed everyone that much more is possible than you think. Maybe not the Aliasing (but it's certainly worth a look), but a sharper codec is very possible as it has already been done on the GH1.

gene_can_sing
08-03-2010, 04:44 PM
You're right BradM. Sorry for misinforming everyone. I should have said Tester 13 made the "Image Quality better" on the GH1. It's a good thing you're a stickler for these things.

dcloud
08-04-2010, 01:22 PM
gh1 and the t2i both have a different sensors.

gh1 apparently produces a much 'resolute' image natively and t2i does not.
tester didnt touch the sensor settings to make it "sharper" he just increased bitrate which doesnt really affect sharpness.

what your asking is not impossible but highly improbable to happen.
the 5d hack has been out for almost 2 years and no progress has been made on the sensor. im just telling you, its more feasible to add menu items, disable and enable features but not reprogram a sensor.

Yeah, part of the process is the final streamlining of the hack - which is clearly not here in the pre-beta stage.

Very cool stuff, but I'm in the same boat as you - just not computer savvy enough to try. The forum page literally makes my head spin.

And this thread will heat up plenty if Tramm (bless you) can work out all the issues, but right now it's only for those people much further along in computers and DSLRS than I am....

Although I am trying to learn.

It's really not as complex as you think, the hardest part is the command line prompt to make a card bigger than 4GB bootable.

If you cannot install the pre-beta then you wont be able to install any version of magic lantern as they're all installed the same way.

okay. so, after a quick test, by downloading the files onto your SD card, it is simple enough to get magic lantern (Just go to the P mode, go to the third wrench icon in the settings, and perform a firmware update.) However, without making the SD card bootable, you will need to do this every time you reboot your camera. but I don;t know how to get to the actual ML settings/menu :(

they say the GUI is still not working, maybe you have to preset everything on some text file or something like that (just speculating)

Features of the latest version:

Onscreen audio meters
Lens data computation
Manual audio gain, selectable input source
Cropmarks
Zebra stripes / histogram

GUI menus
Headphone monitoring via A/V jack
Waveform
(plus: maybe the videos on that wiki page can help you somehow)

I don't think it will work on a 60D, and may brick it if you force it to get installed on one

but maybe its firmware is not encrypted (unlike the 7D); if that's the case, I'd expect them to port it to the 60D in a few months

Where can i get the 1.0.8 firmware version? I can only find the 1.0.9 version on the canon page. Can anybody who has the installer share it on rapidshare, hotfile or something? thanks

It looks like you can downgrade to 1.0.8 and there is a link for the firmware here.

this seems to be "the big update".. GUI menus working fine, don't have to mess with the config files to do settings. audio meters/histogram/spotmeter work great... follow Derkoi's guide: http://www.derkoi.co.uk/film/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89:how-to-install-magic-lantern-firmware-on-the-canon-550d-t2i&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=1 and just update the files in the "copy to SD folder" to the most updated ones you can grab from here: https://bitbucket.org/a1ex/magic-lantern/wiki/Home

I'm not particularly tech savvy and that guide really did the trick! do not be afraid!

ok, I will preface this by saying that I am pretty good at computers (I have built my own and I am current a computer science coding major).

I hate to be "one of those people" but I can not for the life of me get this to work on my T2i using OSX.

I have tried several different approaches, and I think that I am simply failing at getting the card to be bootable...

Any ideas? I currently don't have access to a windows machine, which is unfortunate...

Working with this more, I've found it to be a bit buggy. Zebra worked when I first started up but hasn't since, every time I turn the camera off I need to remove the battery just to get it to turn back on, and even when I use non-magic lantern cards, there's a noticeable lag in startup time. do not like this.

the 1.0.8 requires you to downgrade the EOS firmware (if you already installed 1.0.9) and downgrade the entire ML suite. I had to reformat my card, make it rewritable, and then added the newest autoexec.bin to the mix of folders from the tutorial.

He is asking if you got the 1.0.8 ML release. There is a 1.0.8 and a 1.0.9 Magic Lantern release. These correlate to the Canon FW you are running. So if you are running 1.0.8 Canon FW, you need ML 1.0.8.

I'm not sure you can switch, though someone on here said they did it so maybe they can tell us. 1. If I do this install of Magic Lantern, can I revert back to stock canon firmware?

4. What are the chances of bricking the t2i? As long as I follow the steps, I shouldn't have any problems?
5. What happens if I start the t2i up with a regular SD card, and NOT the ML firmware SD card?

Understood, but i'm making a general assumption that you have the file that is needed for 1.08 firmware(from canon, not ML) which is what I'm requesting. :)

Hey guys, I want to ask:

I was thinking about selling my T2i this month - I was thinking about getting a 60D, personally, the swivel screen would help me in so many ways all on it's own, and I wanted the extensive ISO's and white balances to boot, as well as manual audio. I also simply want to sell my camera as I've never been convinced that the video quality is optimal for what my camera should be doing (this cameras been banged up a couple times), and it'd be an ease of mind just to sell the camera to someone who'd use it more and then buy a 60D.

Thing is, all the sudden, a hack comes out for this thing and really seems to revolutionize it. But I'm truly not a computer efficient person, even looking around this thread is confusing to me, and I simply don't know if I should keep my camera and try to master this hack, or if getting the 60D would for the most part be the same thing. What are the positives and negatives here? And even then, if hacking is the route to go, would I be better to still sell my T2i and get a camera from the GH series instead of hacking the T2i? I personally would rather just skip the hacks and get a 60D, it's appealed to me for a long time, but at the end of the day, I've always felt like the footage from these DSLR's in their natural form suck. So what to do, really?

P.S. I do have to say that so far, I don't really use histograms, to me they're hard to read and I'd rather just go out and buy a light meter. So if the type of histograms are really the only thing the T2i hack has going for it, the 60D would probably be my choice....

If you have the extra cash trade up for the 60D.
The hack can spell trouble. Even has a warning disclaimer for the inventor.
As far as the quality is concerned don't underestimate it. I shoot side by side with an EX3 and the little 550d is replacing it.

I did a test I might get up later, though it was no where near perfect and had a few flaws, I found very little noticeable difference in quality from -8 through up to -15 the highest I could record, for me there was very little difference. On the other hand the other features are great I love them, if you have the knowledge and time this is worth doing but I wouldn't worry to much about Qscale until other post some better results or it is tweaked more (who knows there are many scenarios to test it in which I did not).

Bad feeling of a brick here...

Now, T2i won't even turn-on = definition of bricked?

Followed these very helpful instructions <http://www.derkoi.co.uk/film/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89:how-to-install-magic-lantern-firmware-on-the-canon-550d-t2i&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=1> with apparent success thru Step 4, battery out, then back in, but now my t2i won't even turn on.

(The make-SD-Card-Bootable step felt a bit strange, but everything seemed to go alright, right up until battery back in... and now, no camera start.)

(Baseline Firmware was 1.0.8. Used a Transcend 16gb Class 10 for attempted Magic Lantern.)

Any suggestions?

(Hopefully not $800 for an attempt at audio meters?... Live, and learn, but this has always been about the glass anyway, right?)

you have to make sure you have the same firmware files on each card you use as well, I also found that only one of my faster cards once made bootable and loaded with the same firmware (just having it on the root file of the sd) would make my camera boot. I thought I had bricked mine as well but once I did this and pressed live view just after turning on I got it to run fine and after that it has been working fine so far. I had to run a lot of the different versions of ML to get it right though, after I messed it up, so try them all if you have to.

hope some of this helps, oh and I have to still remove the battery after each shut down, I think it's fixed but haven't looked into that yet.

you have to make sure you have the same firmware files on each card you use as well, I also found that only one of my faster cards once made bootable and loaded with the same firmware (just having it on the root file of the sd) would make my camera boot.

What SD Card are you using? The highest (lowest?) Q setting I got was Q -9.

I'm using a sandisk ultra 8GB 15MB/s, but I can only use the High Q settings on lower ISO's stably, I find Q -10 works the best below 1600, and Q -9 for the rest. Though as I said earlier I'm not to worried about it so I'm going to leave it at -9 for now.

oh and for now it's the only one I have that is working, but I haven't tested the others now that I have figured it out (...I think).

@ cap10kirk / #191:

Many, many thanks... Will sleep well, as no t2i firmware bricklaying at least for this evening.

Changed cards from 16gb down to to a 2gb this time (think this relic arrived with the original Zoom), with Fat 32 formatting thru R-click in Win 7 Ultimate (a formatting procedure which at least for me, seems to work on this particular 2gb card - and in a much more comforting manner than CardTricks, for example).

Then, made bootable by the very kind Dangerous Derk tut... Command line.... "W"... move some batteries, cross-fingers, and voila, Trammell's magic appears.

So, appears am also unable to get ML 1.0.8 cooperation with a 16gb Transcend Class 10.

Is this something with Fat and all 16gb cards in general? (Understand 4gb will work? Somewhat too bad, as kind of like the 16gb size.)

(Lastly, and after thinking I had bricked my t2i... when got to the point of just wanting everything back to "normal" with 1.0.8 Canon dogmatic firmware, was a huge relief to successfully follow Dangerous Derk's recommendation to use the command line "R" command to change the 16gb Transcend card back to non-bootable - and thus T2i back to "normal", with 16gb Transcend movie record mode, albeit without Magic Lantern. Oh, and is slightly tricky when looking for the Firmware version, that the '3rd Wrench' in the Menu, does NOT appear in Movie mode, but rather in a Photo Mode.)

So, again, thanks to Dangerous Derk's tut (and the Captain for talking me off the ledge) - at least with a small 2gb card, am now showing t2i Firmware Ver 1.0.8-ml-0.1.9.

Hi
I just installed ML 1.0.8 on my T2i with FW 1.0.8. It works perfectly, but I got no menu, only the audio meters.
Looks like it's possible to even control mic levels manually, which interests me very much. Are there different versions of ML 1.0.8?
Thanks for your help.

I won a contest on the radio, got money from the gov., going to Mexico, & got the ML to work on my camera!!! WOW! :D

EDIT:
- When I turn the camera off, and then turn it back on, it doesnt always turn on. I have to remove the battery then put it back in for it to turn on.

- When I turn the cam on, the zebras do not always turn on always. I have to switch modes for it to start working.

- I don't have any crop marks. How do I get them? I want 1.35:1

- I cant hear my audio when watching what I just recorded.
*I know it recorded the audio because the audio levels were moving, and it works on the computer, but not on the camera.

honestly, right now, I dont feel safe using this. Just now my camera froze when I tried deleting a video. The camera shut off, but the screen was still frozen. I removed the battery, and the screen was still on for a second or two. :S

I changed cinemascope cropmarks picture a bit ,its better now IMO
http://www.speedyshare.com/files/25771248/CineScop.bmp

My cam turns on every time,no problems.
In video mode there is Qscale for bitrates, there is histogram, zebra for under/over exposing ,manual audio gain, cropmarks for cinemascope and fisheye corection,i cant test rack focus but its there too.

I am not sure if bitrates Qscale is implemented correctly cause sometimes low settings like -5 are similar to default ones and have 45mb and default setting has 46mb ,setting -14 has 45mb too and setting -15 has 57mb

But get newest firmware(the one i gave in this post) not the one he gives you on this website, from his files you only need bootCF file and Dll to set card to bootable.
I dont know maximum qscale for me is 13 without recording turning off because of too much mb per second, i can record 10 seconds with qscale -14.
This stuff is great BTW,manual audio and cropmarks especially ,its nice to see it already in cinemascope ratio onscreen and set framing.
I wish they would unlock ISO's in video mode ,so we could have 1250 or 1000 etc,in auto mode this iso is available cause exposure change is smooth, there is no way to lock it tho.
--
I repeat DONT use firmware from his website(you need only 2 gfiles from his archive, exe and dll one) ,its 1.8 version ,installing this on 1.9 firmware can lock the camera for good.

What firmware do you have on camera ? 1.8 or 1.9 ?
if you havee already mlantern on card then makecard non bootable usinng bootCF ,then format card and start all over again how it says on website - http://www.derkoi.co.uk/film/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89:how-to-install-magic-lantern-firmware-on-the-canon-550d-t2i&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=1

But instead of his files ,copy new vrsion of magic lantern to your card ,the one for firmware 1.9 (and update to canon firmware 1.9 first from their website if you still have firmware 1.8 on camera).
You need all those files unpacked on your card:
http://ml-devel.googlegroups.com/attach/f4b6ffddba3870d0/magiclantern-2010dec16.550d.fw109.PRERELEASE.a1ex.zip?gda=EfS24 kYAAAAj8tKoe6FAvKibF8VwpfsliPDOxHsMFs3hN5vFtfMsck-YVLos8HDp789UUCF1wzdx40jamwa1UURqDcgHarKEE-Ea7GxYMt0t6nY0uV5FIQ&part=2

16gb Class 10 Transcend now working in my t2i, after Canon 1.0.8 -> Canon 1.0.9 firm + ML 1.0.9-ml-2010d.

(As above in #190 & 196, was having some trouble with ML 1.0.8 on Canon 1.0.8... 16gb class 10 wouldn't boot, and not until using a 2gb card, was I assuaged of no brick. But even then, there were no menus. So, then got menus via Wagner's kind post in above #210. But, price of added menus, was having to remove batteries after a shut-off, in order to re-start. So, then all-in for new Canon firmware, and after first updating t2i to Canon 1.0.9, followed by updating to ML 1.0.9 - using the ML firmware kindly linked to by Bwwd in above #215, now have menus, 16gb Class 10 card use, and no apparent battery in/out issues.)

Again, for me, key was to flash the latest Canon firmware 1.0.9, and then use ML firm from #215. And I basically put new files into a folder on the C drive, which I had named MLinstall, and then just again followed the Derk tutorial, using the #215 files, rather then the older firmware in the tut.

The Zebra feature is outstanding.

Even if there were no audio improvement, with agc disable, the Zebras and menus would be well worth the ML install adventure.

(And also thanks to bwwd for the opaque scope crops in #213.)

Suppose the apparent new ISOs would be next reason for messing, but time to cash in the chips for now...

You made card bootable ! Dont do that i explained clearly.Dont instert bootable card iwthout MLantern into the camera ,its not safe.
You pressed W in command line ,its making card bootable , you must do it again and press R !
Its explained very clearly on this website
http://www.derkoi.co.uk/film/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89:how-to-install-magic-lantern-firmware-on-the-canon-550d-t2i&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=1

If your camera will turn on normally then install canon firmware 1.9, if you do that then install magic lantern.Dont install 1.9 magic lantern on 1.8 canon firmware - you can brick the camera, dont install magic lantern 1.8 from derkoi website on canon 1.9 firmare - you can also brick the camera.
Again cropmarks for cinemascope:
http://www.speedyshare.com/files/25807405/CineScop.bmp
http://www.speedyshare.com/files/25807398/hd_ta.bmp

It says clearly on his website :
IMPORTANT
To stop using the Magic Lantern firmware, you must disable the SD card from being bootable. If you just delete the firmware from the SD card, the camera won't boot & you could damage it.

But you did just that ,be careful there!

there is no 48 shutter speed, maybe it will be someday, this needs more reverse engineering and digic info.

I dont know about HDMI but its possible to use USB and have picture on camera and on laptop in the same time using eosmovrec.

Where in the QScale normal recording falls?

This is an amazing feature, but no doubt it can cause faster overheating, right? Or the difference can't be noticed?

My factory setting T2i does 46-48 Mb/s. So the answer would be 12, right? I wonder if this is a SD card issue or the actual camera.

Crazy how far ML has come for the t2i/550d in the past few days....really useful stuff making it even more shooter friendly....what do you guys set your zebra maxs and mins at? or just leave it at what it is set for?

http://vimeo.com/18024074

Here's a test a did this morning for levels -9 to -16. Even in full 1080 on my monitor I have trouble telling the difference from 13 up, so forget about it with Vimeo's encoding. If you'd like the original h264, you can download it at the Vimeo page for this video.I'll probably just stick with the standard canon encoding, that little buffer bar makes me nervous!

This was also a test of the "Cinemascope" cropmarks, worked great! Simple FCP workflow for 2:35.1 = Shoot with ML Cinemascope cropmarks, cut full-HD footage (as in, don't crop it yet). Once you've got a final cut, sequence settings > custom > 1920x810. The reason I say crop once finished: I've been having a problem where I'll change sequence settings, then when I drag other (uncropped 1920x1080) clips into the sequence, it squeezes it into the frame instead of cropping, resulting in bars on all four sides. Any solution for this?

Let me know if there's any more specific tests you'd like to see!

Why do we need those shutter speeds?

bwwd
12-20-2010, 03:47 PM
Because i requested it:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

I like to have every option unlocked in ISO and shutter speeds ,sometimes i needed above 125 but less than 160 shutter.

I also did it because from my own experience with coding i know that i have more motivation after i do something impressive(and unlocking ISO's by Alex was VERY impressive) and if someone would ask about something when i am in "motivation mode" then i would have more will to do it ,thats why i requested shutter speeds right after unlocked ISO's and Alex did wonderful job! Thank You very much ! We 550D users are very lucky :)
I was hoping for 1/48 shutter speed (for 24p)or 1/120(for 60p) but those arent coded into camera by canon engineers.

I made the card non-bootable. I pressed R and it worked. Everything was deleted from my card. I put the card into my camera. It worked the first time, then the second time it wouldnt go.
I had to format the card & do the step to non-boot the card again. Although it said it was already non-bootable, i still tried it. After a while the camera started to work. :D No idea what happened there but, the problem is solved. I followed the steps. So, I dont know.

Yes. You don't use EOS Utility to update firmware. Google is your friend. Instead of demanding answers from people, try google first. For instance, here is the google result for "1.0.9 t2i firmware": http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=1.0.9.+t2i+firmware

....the first result is not only the firmware file you need, but directions too! Read them thoroughly.

Oh my God, excellent work! Amazing.

Is there any way to overlay cropmarks burned into the actual video as its recording? I say this because then it makes the q-scale at max setting possible for long periods as the bitrate is used more efficiently.

The current work-a-round is to actually put a physical piece of paper on the sensor (http://www.mmfilm.co.uk/mmfilm/archives/789 ) or masking the lens. Not the most ideal...

bwwd, could you forward this suggestion on?

So I am still debating this, would love detailed walkthrough from a mac person that has done this successfully.

Dumb question time: this seems to be tied heavily into a particular card you format with the software etc., so does that mean as long you are running this you are restricted to using this one card as opposed to swapping them out like you might normally do?

Hey man I did it yesterday, Im on a mac...16gb transcend class 6 sdhc...here is what i did took 5 minutes....

Here are my steps....i just followed the INSTALL .pdf that came in the unzipped file....
1. Put regular SD card in camera and formatted it
2. Took out SD card from camera and downloaded the latest "magiclantern-0.2.0.rc1.550d.fw109" and unzipped it
3. On my MAC copied only the .fir file onto the SD card and put the SD card back into my camera and went through the update firmware process...waited until the light went off and turned the camera off and took battery out
4. Put battery and SD card back in and formatted the SD card in camera again
5. Took SD card out and put back in card reader in MAC...moved the autoexec.bin, all .bmp files, and magic.cfg to the SD card. Next opened the make_bootable.sh file and changed the line near the top to dev=/dev/disk1s1 ((((this may vary but on my MBP it was disk1s1)))).
6. Then copied everything in the make_bootable.sh file and pasted it in terminal and hit enter....this should unmount the SD card...I then took the SD card out of the computer and put it back in to make sure that it would mount again
7. Once I did this I then put the SD card in the camera and turned on the camera and voila it was there working with all the menus when you hit the garbage button

No 3rd party software...Literally took 5 minutes...obviously do at your own risk....i hold no responsibility if you brick your camera...

and of course the ISOs and audio play back version is up now....magiclantern-2010Dec20.550d.fw109.iso+menu.alex

Make every card bootable and have ML on all of them, swap them out no problem. ML takes up negligible space on the SD card. I set up 5 cards with ML this morning and it took me all of 7 minutes once I got into the groove. I highly recommend it.

wondering if the hdmi and lcd can be both turned on

That would be nice... but even more interesting IMO, would be a way to output live HDMI to an external recording device, such as a firestore. This would eliminate recording length issues and/or a need to swap memory cards.
