View Full Version : Online conference proposal

Vitaliy Kiselev
07-24-2010, 12:19 PM
Here is small proposal to make closed online conference.

I invite Panasonic GH1 USA manager (personal invitation will be sent),
Panasonic Lumix USA manager (same thing), Japan Lumix group guys,
Panasonic Australia guys, Panasonic France Lumix manager.

I also specially invide James and Barry to take part in this.

It is in all community interests to make clear my position to Panasonic managers (I had talks only to few of them, not in the list above) and to make clear Panasonic position to Lumix community and specifically to this project.

Please leave short note if you support this.

Thanks.

Yes, such an online 'face-to-face' discussion would only surely help in getting this communities interests and those of Panasonic- out into the open.

We do hope so. It is also in the interest of those of us who bought into m4/3 lens systems.

Kindly take our concerns to them.

A bug free AVCHD codec at the specified limit of 24 mbits should be perhaps the most we can realistically hope from them and it may even work the same way as say 40 mbits footage of current GH13. The obvious candidates like PAL<>NTSC, Language etc. must be there too..

Sure. I support the meeting.

Wow. What a load of baloney. Vitaliy seems to find it necessary to edit my response so that it shows unequivocal support. I guess only his opinions as to what is or is not in the interest of Panasonic are allowed to be posted.

Actually, after reviewing other posts, I see that my assessment is not correct. Vitaliy does not seem to have edited the posts of others who have shared his opinion. So clearly the problem is not one of saying more than "for" or "against." Additional opinions are allowed so long as those aren't the "wrong" opinions.

There is only a lot to gain and nothing much to loose in the conference.

I was getting ready to buy a Canon T2i a couple of days ago and noticed the new hack at that time. So, I was then going to get the GH1 because of the hack. Now that I see it may be blocked, I may be going back to the Canon.

Let them think about that scenario for a bit. Especially when they are trying to get into a market that is dominated by Canon at the moment.

+1 Let them have their cake and eat it too. The conference must happen.
Here is my vote as to what should be discussed.

1. Higher bit rate formats from the factory.
2. Digital Zoom with no quality loss for video. If the scaling is done properly then you should be able to zoom digitally with no quality loss since the native resolution is so much higher than even 1080p.

I want to outline to all people here.
Look at release date of 1.34 and 1.24 firmware.
It is 02 June 2010. And this is release date, not decision making date.
In fact, we struggled to make working MJPEG at that time.
And I had GH1 only few days. :-)

and then request a conference call with Panasonic. Be careful on numbers with these things as nothing will get discussed and agreed if there are too many involved!

A formal agenda before commencing the conference should be agreed and minute the actions carefully as again they may agree to such a conference but ownership of actions may get passed-on and not honoured?

Overall though, excellent idea and I hope Panasonic embrace the idea in the spirit of which it is offered.

Good luck.

I hope everyone reads and understands what Vitaliy just wrote.

Put simply, the new FW release 1.34 was on GH1's BEFORE Vitaliy even had a working Hack, so Panasonic did not react to it with a block in mind, they probably were not even aware. So let's not react to Panasonic in a negative way and keep the avenue of communication open to response please.

I support this.

Keep the number of participants to a minimum and the list of requests organized and prioritized. A Panasonic rep is very likely going to come to this conversation with extremely limited engineering knowledge. Their understanding of the product is probably limited to what their cut-sheet tells them!

Vitaly obviously needs direct access to engineering representatives. That should be the goal of the call - to prove concept and get Vitaly an ongoing audience with Panasonic product developers.

I support too. There's probably a lot of people like me who's major reason for buying the GH1 was the hack.

Speaking of that, I got mine last week from B&H. I've been busy and haven't had much time to play with it, but I did try and hack it on Saturday. I think it worked. I believe I used the C settings. It quit recording during one of my clips (write error?) so that is my basis for saying it worked. I wasn't quite sure how to check the bit rate but I did transfer my AVCHD to ProRes through Log & Transfer. How can I check?

And G1, GF1 and GH1 users are not interesting from commercial side anymore (if they do not want new body).

I guess the hack bothers them especially two features-OEM batteries and Japanese only language as these affect their bottom line.

So with GH1 and GF1 the currently installed firmware may indeed be the last one and they don't need to publish it.

You may need to figure out a way to dump the firmware via USB, but that may involve going into service mode and be too risky for average users.

Good luck and thanks for the spectacular job with the Ptool.

If this initiative were to succeed, I believe is the first time a manufacturer listens to its buyers. Has never happened that Sony, Panasonic etc. needs of its users.
A panel discussion constructive ideas, proposals, etc. to convince manufacturers ourselves we are the market, not that we meekly their products.
Certainly the Vitality's work has upset the GH1, unthinkable believe that might even be better of various Canon 550D, 7D and 5D.
The GH1 was the basis for the new Panasonic AF100 that, I think, a camcorder that will break the schemas of classical conception of video field.
And this will force me to sell my AG-HMC 151 just purchased (I had all Panasonic cameras: F10, MS4, DVX100, HVX200).

Would we not want to as a collective "group" want to have a clear concise agenda ?

With that agenda back up with the number of users that help create and support the collective agenda ?

I am all for this.

But.....

I would further suggest a user's group meeting in person with our camera's in conjunction with online access of the meetings. Keep in mind this is a large company. We need I think to show them in person all the things there camera is doing. Not sure they are really aware.

In addition their market penetration is terrible in the brick and mortar stores.

Just in three days of getting my new G2. I personally have helped three people choose either a G2 or GH1. Since this Friday to Sunday.

Why ? Because no one has seen the damn camera in real life.

My challenge to Panasonic....

Give us a contest .... Let us send in commercials of their product and they air them online from their site, youtube and others. Maybe we should just do our own commercial of what their camera should do ? Present that to them ?

I think the hack is great and await one for the G2. Be glad to be a beta tester.

Kindly,
Bruce
