From what I'm seeing there, I think this may be Spielberg's next "Always."

Well I caught this up in San Francisco and what a dissapointment. How this made it past the Final Cut is beyond me. The film starts off very promising and strong and just fades, no, spirals away into crap.
There is a obligatory 'love interest' in Zeta Jones whose performance is uninspired and storyline is merely in the way. This sub-plot does not serve the story in any way and really bogs the picture down.
I'm actually surprised Spielberg and Hanks let this get by. Hanks is solid as usual but even his power cant help this film. There is a couple other sub-plots that just dont seem to jive and really done make any sense.
The character played by Stanley Tucci is well done but when he grabs Hanks by the neck and yells at him (you'll see) it just doesnt fit the story or the characters development. It is just sucha surprise that it doesnt work.
There is an Indian Custodian that takes up waaay to much screen time and another sub plot love story that makes no sense whatsoever (after Hanks plays "Cyrano de Bergerac" in passing words to a lady and then she agrees to marry the guy without even knowing him? What?
This movie fails miserably after starting off very promising in the first act. Dont waste your time.

To be fair, I think that relationship happens off screen, but it does happen.
I think this joins the ranks of Spielberg's "nice" films, pleasant enough, not world-changing or earth-shattering. But nice. And it joins his last few films as departures from his normal style. But I'm not so sure, IMO, it's a welcome departure. The Terminal might as well have been directed by Gore Verbinski for all it's lack of a personal signature.
Probably the biggest thing working against the film besides the huge expectations, however, is the timing of the release. Does this really feel like a summer film? I don't think it does. It probably would have played better in the fall or winter movie season.

I think that shot of Hanks reflection in the glass with the suit over him was amazing. I don't know why, but I just thought that was so cool.
