16x manual lens for live events?

I want to purchase the manual lense, rather than keeping the stock lens, but fear that it will no be convinient when shooting weddings, and live events.

How hard is it to constantly have to focus during a live event with the manual lens? What things do I have to keep in consideration?

I understand Varizoom carries a remote for zooming, are there other alternatives?

I thought it zoomed with the default LANC zoom controllers but no focus. The Varizoom is for focus only I think. Anyone?

Also I would be more concerned with optical image stabilization than focus. But that is me as I never use the auto focus, even on the stock 20x lens.
