On one of the forums (or is there only one :) I read the issue raised that XL1 audio was inferior compared with DVX and that thusfar Canon has been mute about tangilbe audio signal quality improvements. From my background, this is a significant aspect of the production process and if anyone is insipred, I'd like us to track this and learn more informed opinions regarding the relative quality of audio.

So would we all. Can't know anything until we get a camera to test, and they won't be on the shelves for a month. But I quite look forward to Jay Rose testing it in DV magazine.

Thanks Barry. But as far as the XL1 vs DVX audio quality and versitilty, someone help me here. I have read that DVX excels vs XL1 but I am a decade or two removed from Arri BL 16s and mono Nagras. What should we be looking for in the XL2 to make in compete with the 100A?

DOH! Sorry, I thought you meant XL2 (the message title is XL2, but in the body of your message you said XL1).

Jay Rose went through and compared all the prosumer DV cameras for audio, and yes, the DVX does indeed kick the XL1 to the curb. Hopefully they've rectified that in the XL2, but the XL1 doesn't hold a candle to the DVX when it comes to audio.

But again, we won't know how it performs until a quality tech reviews it. Just by it saying "we have XLR connectors" doesn't mean anything -- you can get XLR connectors on the JVC HD10, but it transfers the signal to the camera through an UNBALANCED MINI JACK, thus forfeiting all the benefits of XLR, and also records with a tinny slap-echo! It's horrible. Yet you can't really know until you perform detailed tests. So while the specs for the XL2 look good on paper, that's meaningless: it's got to be tested by a qualified tech like Jay Rose before we know whether it is now competitive.
