What should be the default shutter speed for the xl2 when shooting in 25p?

I have used 1/25 when shooting before because when you change it to higher, like 1/50, the shutter warning light goes on in the viewfinder.

But then I read the shutter speed FAQ thread in the technical forum which recommended 1/48 or 1/50 for 24p/25p as standard.

So for the xl2 should I be using 1/50 shutter speed as standard when shooting 25p?

I did notice that the stuff I shot did have a lot of motion blur, but it did not look jerky like it does on lower shutter speeds like 1/12.

Yes ! 1/50 for 25p

Reason: in 25p, one frame time is 1/25 th of a second. To get the film camera effect of 180 shutter angle you have to keep the shutter open for half of the time of one frame . That equals to 1/50 th of a second which is half of 1/25 of a second of the whole frame time.

Hope that explains a bit.

Ok thanks for clearing that up.

The stuff I've done with 1/25 really doesn't look that bad though - a bit blurrier with fast motion, but really not too bad. It lets you have a bit extra light too, which is useful.

I tried out 1/25 on a local footbal game, and the ball left huge motion trails behind it whenever it was kicked through the air. Nice effect, but not what I was intending. 1/50 was much better.

Does anyone have any recommendations for martial arts action? Would it be any different? I'm not going for any particular effects, just a normal look for motion, like Crouching Tiger, but unfortunately won't have time to do any tests. I've heard numbers from 1/60th to 1/90th as having some good results.

Hi Topper The shutter warning light is just to let you know that that your not on the standard shutter speed, which is 1/60 for NTSC and probablely 1/50 for PAL

No, for some reason the light comes on when you select anything but 1/25 for PAL 25p. I think it's just a mistake, because 1/25 is not very useful, but maybe someone else knows better?

I find the slower speeds good when i'm desperate for light. 1/25 or 1/30 only causes slight bluring if the subject isn't moving to fast and your at a reasonable distance.
Thanks for the info on the shutter light Jaegersing
