Finally ... after 3 months going back and forth between the DVX100a, XL2 and FX1 ...
... doing hundreds of tests trying to get good results with interlaced HDV footage ...
I decided !
The winner is the XL2 !!!
Ordered it today at a local Video Store in San francisco for $4500 . Rush delivery of 2 days was FREE ! Canon pays for it if you want rush delivery. Go figure.
Now ... I just have to ... wait a bit longer ...
... THE AGONY !!!!

Well, i was supposed to show it to someone tomorrow but i had a change of heart. *Pheewww* I won't be using it until a few months but now i'm thinking of buying the mini35 for it. I contacted MOVIEtube but they said it doesn't work with the XL2 but they will send me the dvd anyways.

Yea it was for me. When the DHL people came i wasn't home and i called them saying that the package was very important and that i need it asap. They were nice enough to send out a smaller van to meet the driver at his current delivery so they can drop it of to me that very same day! Great service! I took pictures of it before i assembled the camera together. Its worth the wait. I wanna see footage by Saturday! ;D

Nice ! But what's up with those vertical bands on the following link.

Look at the picture upper row most left. Lots of banding in the blurred woman with the skarf !!

I thought that was rather bizzaro too. *Without asking them, you can't tell if its our monitors, the compression codec, the decompression codec, or a camera artifact.
All DV cameras, including the 'almighty' DVX100a have artifacting especially with heavy action in the shot. *(A couple DVX100a veterans told me this.)
The weirdest thing I have ever noticed is that when I am watching movies compressed to DV Video (not NTSC) on a hi-rez monitor, all the hot reds get jaggy and aliased. *Every other color set is fine. *Must be the compression codec or the decompression codec because I am sure the original 35mm print didn't have that.
Getting back to that one frame, it is a mystery best solved by contacting them...You may hear back that those weird lines don't exist in the original footage.
ARgh. I have officially worked 35 hours in the last three days. tired..

It has to do with the DV codec, and has nothing to do with the camera itself. If happens all the time with the dvx as well. It is most prevelent in reds, but can be found in super saturated blues as well. To take care of the problem you need simply apply a vertical or horizontal chroma blur to the image. This does not destroy the image in any way, only bluring the parts of the offending choma channel.

Does Vegas do chroma blur ?
Frank

absolutely, as long as you get vegas 5. There is a downside as any clip that you apply the chroma blur to takes much longer to render, but the results are much better. you definitly want to apply it just to offending clips.

Tell me about it! I've been waiting since October for my new camera, and it only just arrived this Friday! Now the only problem is, what the hell do I shoot with it until my next job! It's all very well shooting stuff out of the window and the kitchen etc, but it would be nice to do something cool with it in the meantime!
